Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if it's a bit like calling your child town centre or plaza something.

Thunderbirds and/or stingray are before my time being mid thirties so i wouldnt have seen the link. Younger people will have no idea of these series at all, therefore no need to be put off by vintage telly references.

Azure83 · 11/03/2019 21:07

No, it's where you park your yacht.

whippersnapperwrapper · 11/03/2019 21:07

My uncle had a Morris Marina in the 70s. Grin

olderthanyouthink · 11/03/2019 21:25

I like it. Reminds me of a model Marina Nery (she's 23 btw)

DramaAlpaca · 11/03/2019 21:33

I like it.

rosydreams · 11/03/2019 21:34

marina
/məˈriːnə/
noun
a specially designed harbour with moorings for pleasure yachts and small boats.

its a nice sounding word but i personally would feel it a bit odd

slappinthebass · 11/03/2019 21:38

My first thought was the Merina Coil. I do kind of like it though.

Harebellsies · 11/03/2019 21:42

Marina Hynde (sic??) writes for the Guardian.
Marina Grimaldi would sound good.
Would Marianna or Miranda have a similar effect for you? They are both shakespearean heroines I think but would have to google which plays.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 11/03/2019 21:47

I think it's lovely. There was a Princess Marina and her granddaughter is Marina Ogilvy. There was also a Russian Princess Marina. It's certainly got some class!

(Marina in Stingray was my first girl crush and she wasn't even real!)

CocoLoco87 · 11/03/2019 21:49

I'm 31 and grew up with Stingray! After singing Aqua Marina in my head it also reminds me of Ben Fogle's wife who appears to be lovely. I like it Smile

beansontoastfortea · 11/03/2019 21:52

Reminds me of boats and the coast line unfortunately but that may be because I live on the coast and there's marina restaurant, marina theatre, marina cafe, etc

whitehalleve · 11/03/2019 21:53

I know one and she's the loveliest person

paperandfireworks · 11/03/2019 21:53

Coil

Boats.

brizzlemint · 11/03/2019 21:54

As long as there isn't one in every port.

ApplestheHare · 11/03/2019 22:01

Thanks everyone!

The brand of coil is Mirena so I'm not worried about that. I was more concerned about the boating associations but to be fair our home in this country is as landlocked as you can get and when we're abroad the name is more common anyway. I reckon if we lived near, say, Brighton Marina it would be bad.

It's grown on me this evening anyway. Or maybe it's just the relief that DH and I have a single name we like after months of drawing a blankBlush

I did think coil, boats, and Marina and the diamonds.

But I agree Marina is “posh name”, and I think even Marina from Marina and the diamonds went to a very good posh private school. I can’t remember the name.

It’s nice. I prefer other names. But it’s nice.

Sophronia · 11/03/2019 22:50

Love it.

YogaWannabe · 11/03/2019 22:54

My first thought is always Marina and Ulay reuniting at her exhibition which I think is a lovely!

YogaWannabe · 11/03/2019 22:55

*thing!

longestlurkerever · 11/03/2019 22:59

I know two Marinas who both have Greek connections but I think it can work even if you don't. Surprised so many have never heard of Stingray. Thunderbirds etc were pretty popular for quite a while. Is not a bad reference though.

Oldtiger · 11/03/2019 23:03

Although spelt differently, it would be pronounced pretty much the same as the Mirena coil- that was my first thought I’m afraid

lilabet2 · 11/03/2019 23:30

It's a pretty name!

FairfaxAikman · 12/03/2019 02:49

I'm mid-thirties and I immediately made the connection. But then I'm a massive Gerry Anderson fan (and Thunderbirds was rebroadcast in 1992).

ApplestheHare · 12/03/2019 02:53

longestlurkerever we have a French, Spanish and Italian family so it works well in terms of connections. I think! There are tons of Marias in our family and that's a gorgeous name but the meaning 'sea of bitterness' puts me off.

Oldtiger that's Meer-EN-na as opposed to Ma-REE-na though isn't it? Sorry, I'm dreadful at writing worda as they sound so hope that makes sense.

Oldtiger words, even!
