Is Lily too popular?

I love the name Lily. Is it too popular? I’m worried that when she goes to school there might be 4 in each class.
Any suggestions welcome!

I have a Lily. She's the only one in her school of around 200 pupils. She was born in 2010 when it was a very popular name but we rarely meet another actually.

It's beautiful.

I'm a teacher and it's definitely not as popular as 10 years ago, much less common than Poppy etc.

Lovely name. I work in a school of 250, there are 6 Lilies, they are inevitably called Lily B or Lily C.
About the same number of Ella or Ellie.

My DD is 20 and there were four Lilys in her year at Secondary, when Lily was not extremely popular.

I helped out in a reception class recently and there was only one Lily. So it really does vary.

To add, DD had a very unknown name, and she ended up in a represented sports team with a girl that had the same name!

It’s such a lovely name. It would be on my list, regardless of its popularity, had my partner’s sister not named her daughter Lillie 🙄

jarviscockerslover · 29/03/2019 11:53

Yes

Sophronia · 29/03/2019 12:41

It’s still quite popular in my area. It’s a pretty name though.

Tiramisu1 · 29/03/2019 13:47

Yes, too popular. May start to sound and feel dated as it falls out if fashion.

MercyBodle · 30/03/2019 03:23

How long is a piece of string? It's a popular name. For many people that's not a problem, and some even seek out popular names for preference.

Yes there's a chance there might be 4 in her class. Or there might be no others. How much it's a problem is up to you - would you always regret not using your favourite name even if you come across other Lilys? Or would you mostly just be annoyed if she's not the only one in the group?

Other ideas if you decide to look for something else - though some of these are popular too, just not quite as much:

Daisy
Poppy
Lilia
Lilith
Lilias
Rose
Lilac
Violet
Romilly
Lucy

I think it's becoming less popular. I'm a secondary school teacher and teach a lot of Lilys, there is one in most of my classes throughout the years. I have two pre schoolers and have never met one in any of their groups.

I know what the pp means about chavvy. It is very much so where I live too.

Clownfish123 · 30/03/2019 07:50

It's not a chavvy name. It is a popular name that will be used by all social classes but that doesn't make the name chavvy.
Really hate that term used on the baby names thread, especially about a lovely classic name.
I think if you love it use it. It has been popular for a long time and has lost it's shine for me through overuse, but I love the name Sophie which lots of people say has become dull. To me it will always be a beautiful name and I would use it if a friend hadn't got there first despite it's popularity.

Tiramisu1 · 30/03/2019 10:32

Really hate that term used on the baby names thread, especially about a lovely classic name.

But everyone will have a different opinion on what is a 'lovely' or a 'classic' name.

Clownfish123 · 30/03/2019 14:33

That's true but Lily as a name had been around for 100's of years. It's a name that comes in and out of fashion and is used by people from all social groups.
The reason it gets called chavvy is because people considered as 'chavs' will also use the name. God forbid a poor person of l questionable social stature should dare to use the name!

DarlingLittleBabyName · 30/03/2019 17:08

Lily is a very popular name, but i still think it's lovely. If popularity bothers you maybe you could spell it Lilly or Lillie. I know three girls called Lily, all spelt different ways (Lily, Lilly, Lillie) so I think they are all real spellings x
