Is Lily too popular?

I love the name Lily. Is it too popular? I’m worried that when she goes to school there might be 4 in each class.
Any suggestions welcome!

There's a Lilya, Lily and Lily-Mae in my daughter's reception class. I do feel it's gone a bit down-market.

OMGithurts · 08/03/2019 19:23

I think Willow is the new Lily/Lilly. The girls I know called Lily are preschool age.

Ellieboolou27 · 08/03/2019 19:23

2 in my dd’s Class, she’s 6

Claphands · 08/03/2019 19:28

Lily was my favourite name before it became so popular but I didn’t have dc then so couldn’t use it, it put me off a bit so now I do have a DD I used a different name but it’s still a beautiful name OP

Claphands · 08/03/2019 19:29

I meant to say I really loved Lillian this time round but couldn’t use it because of our surname clashing

eatthepineapple · 08/03/2019 19:42

I have a 14 month and only come across 1 Lily in all the baby groups etc. I'd heard it was popular but doesn't seem to be Lily's everywhere in my experience

Valkarie · 08/03/2019 19:59

It's a beautiful name. If you like it, who cares if it is popular. You can pick an unusual one but then find out it becomes top 10 the next year anyway.

OKBobble · 08/03/2019 20:04

I have literally just commented about Lily as a name and how after hearing Staaaaacey Slaaaater on EAstenders call her daughter 'Lil' in her accent I could never use that name now!!

HighestMountains · 08/03/2019 20:06

I know a few, they are all primary age or older now. Two are actually calles Elizabeth - could be a possibility maybe?

Usuallyinthemiddle · 08/03/2019 20:12

If you like it, use it!

It's a pretty classic. There may be another in school. There's 127 4 Avas, Evies, Ellas and Amelias at our school and they have exploded!
I fear for some of the odd names, mind!

MsTSwift · 08/03/2019 21:29

Rendered dull through over use.

Summer23 · 08/03/2019 21:41

If you love it that’s what matters. I would advise not asking for opinions as you’ll get too many responses!! My DD is named Lily and is a bit older now, so at the point it was more an old fashioned name. She is still the only Lily in her class.

IggyAce · 08/03/2019 21:59

I know 2 Lily’s the same age as my dd (11) and there is one in ds class (8).

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/03/2019 22:53

Yes it is very popular, but If you really like it. I.wouldn't let that put you off.
Its okay suggesting another flower name, but Rose, Daisy, Jasmine. and Violet, aren't exactly unheard of either, so You might as well go with what you love

nocluenoidea · 09/03/2019 00:57

There's a really easy way of settling this;

names.darkgreener.com/#lily
number 10 in popularity last year

However if you add Lily with the spelling Lilly it takes it to 3289, which would make it number 4!

jarviscockerslover · 09/03/2019 01:16

It's very popular but a lovely name. How about Lila instead?

mrsm43s · 10/03/2019 00:59

Not as popular as it was . Mostly seen as part of a hyphenated name- Lily-Mae/Lily-Rose, and seen as fairly down market in our area. Also Millie and Tilly/Tillie have similarly dropped in status.

Joeybee · 10/03/2019 02:35

Lily was Uber popular about 10 years ago, but has been declining in popularity since then. I don't think it'll be too popular to use now.

Happyandglorious · 10/03/2019 06:52

Even if it is common, it's classic and imo simple and beautiful

Cbeebiesrehab · 10/03/2019 07:10

Joey it hasn’t declined that much.
It’s still number 10 in the charts and would be number four if alternative spellings were considered.

Arowana · 10/03/2019 07:12

I think it's a pretty name. I know three but they are all age 10 to 13, I don't know any little ones.

Mum2OneTeen · 10/03/2019 07:19

I have a Lily, she's 18 now and we've never come across that many others. If you like the name, then go with it. I agonised about DDs name when she was born b/c I'd read an article saying it was one of the top ten names (2000), but once we'd named her, we never thought any more about it.

Then the only association we had with the name was our DD. She was the only Lily in all her classes throughout school (unlike Indigo which seemed to be the favourite name of our area)

chocolateroses · 10/03/2019 07:21

I have a Lily in Reception year at primary school . There's one other lily in her year of 120 kids (it's a huge school!)

I'll be honest there are a lot of Lilys around but I find it's just as popular or less popular than some other names. I know lots of Mia's and Emily’s for example.

I think that It's a name that is used across the classes. I think of people who know a 'chavvy' Lily will think it's downmarket. But it's also used by upper classes too. I'm cringing at myself for a discussion about 'classes' Confused

I've always loved the name and would have been regretful if I didn't use it. But also I wish I'd had more girls so I could use more beautiful names Smile

PandaCat · 10/03/2019 07:24

I know two called Lily and one Lilly. Also know a Lillian.

boomboom1234 · 10/03/2019 07:30

You could call Your daughter the most obscure name and she could still end up with two in her class. I think forget popularity and just chose a classic name that you love.
