Which way would you go and why?

Hugo tends to be a name picked by people who wish they were a lot posher than they actually are.

Conrad is alright.

HeronLanyon · 09/03/2019 08:32

never the thing with aspirational naming is that those names are of course also used by those aspired to. I only know ‘posh’ (upper class frankly) Hugos for whom the stereotype of it being a ‘posh name’ simply fits so no one bats an eyelid.

MercyBodle · 09/03/2019 08:46

I love Hugo, so my first choice, however I find Conrad interesting. I just don't like the short form Con.

JenSFP · 09/03/2019 10:29

When deciding on our sons name I considered Hugo until I realised how posh I’d sound shouting his name in the aisles in Sainsburys Smile so for that reason I surprise myself and say Conrad. A university friend who I respect and think of as interesting intelligent and must cooler than me has a Conrad too.

JenSFP · 09/03/2019 10:30

#much cooler than me, I meant to type!

AngeloMysterioso · 09/03/2019 10:59

I've never met a Conrad who wasn't a bit of an arsehole.

Admittedly I haven't met hundreds of Conrads, but the ones I have met were enough to put me off the name...

The few Hugos I know, on the other hand, are utterly lovely Smile

NunoGoncalves · 09/03/2019 11:08

Conrad 100%

Hugo seems like a really weak name to me.

sue51 · 09/03/2019 11:11

Hugo is way better. I must say the only Conrad I have met was rather sleazy.

LassOfFyvie · 09/03/2019 11:14

I saw this on Active and thought it was in books and you were debating the merits of Joseph Conrad over Victor Hugo.

Either is good as a name although Conrad might have a slight edge simply because there will be less of them .(Victor Hugo is however far more readable than Joseph Conrad)

Anytime · 09/03/2019 11:25

Definitely Hugo!!

Snog · 09/03/2019 13:14

Hugo is a real posh boy name imo!

PalindromicUser · 09/03/2019 13:18

I, ahem, know a 5 year old Conrad and he is imaginative, brave, funny and cool. But I might be biased Wink

TatianaLarina · 09/03/2019 16:22

Conrad love it. Much cooler.

AliceAforethought · 09/03/2019 21:50

I love Conrad. Probably because my wonderful DGF was a Konrad (Polish).

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 14/03/2019 05:23

I like them both. Sorry not much help

sunflower332 · 23/03/2019 16:56

I like them both but prefer Conrad. Hugo is quite popular.

PolarBearDisguisedAsAPenguin · 23/03/2019 16:58

Hugo but only because the ones I know are lovely and the only Conrad I know is thoroughly unpleasant.

Tillygetsit · 23/03/2019 23:44

Conrad. So cool.

Shadow1234 · 24/03/2019 19:08

Really like Conrad and never met one IRL, so this would be my choice.

Antonin · 25/03/2019 11:55

I prefer Hugo. Conrad hasnt a long history as an English name. It reminds me of an American con man.
I did know a Konrad (Dutch) who was lovely. He was called Kon

JuniorAsparagus · 25/03/2019 11:58

I like Hugo, although a friend refers to her grandson as Yugo. No idea why.

Nameusernameuser · 25/03/2019 12:04

Love Conrad, the boy in the cat in the hat film is called Conrad and it's one of my favourite films.
Hugo is lame.
