My mother passed away when I was 19 and I would like to honour her via my baby’s name....but she was called Margaret and I really don’t like that name. My husband doesn’t like daisy and a friend has Margot. I’ve read that Peggy is a nickname for Margaret....will everybody just think of Peggy Mitchell?!? Any other ideas for Margaret alternatives? My mother herself hated her name being shortened to Maggie and was called Marg or Margie by friends and relatives

Meg is sweet and good for all ages.

kenandbarbie · 20/02/2019 21:48

I like Peggy.

Also Marguerite

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 20/02/2019 21:48

Since you live in East London I'd say go for it - the reason you are liking it is that it is already in the air. If Peggy is the name you really like but you go for Mabel/Ida/Wren instead, you may regret it in 2 years when one of your friends uses it...

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/02/2019 21:52

Love Peggy. I reckon it’ll be a top ten name in 10 years, maybe a bit too soon now though. Although she’d be ahead of her time!

pepperjack · 20/02/2019 21:53

Two of the best people I know called Peggy

Danglingmod · 20/02/2019 21:56

I know a couple of young people named Peggy. They're both quite 'posh' so I don't think of Peggy Mitchell at all. More Dame Peggy Ashcroft.

Bumblebeesmum · 20/02/2019 22:03

I don’t love or hate Peggy but would never have thought Mitchell

Did your mum have a middle name or nice maiden name that could also be considered?

junebirthdaygirl · 20/02/2019 22:07

Love the name Peggy.
In lrish Margaret is Mairead..Mar/aid
which is also lovely as is Maggie

Bumblebeesmum · 20/02/2019 22:13

I don’t see anything wrong with using Peggy but there are millions of Margaret diminutives like Molly even if you decide against Peggy

Bumblebeesmum · 20/02/2019 22:17

Also Madge can be short for things like Magdalen if any of those names appeal (although I have a feeling they won’t as Peggy seems quite modern taste)

foxsbiscuit · 20/02/2019 22:17

Maggie is a gorgeous nickname. I don't like Peggy

CloserIAm2Fine · 20/02/2019 22:18

I know a lovely 11 year old Peggy, and I’ve never once thought of Peggy Mitchell when I see her or hear her name!

Foodtheif · 20/02/2019 22:21

What about Maisie? That’s a shortening of Margaret apparently.

Linny88 · 20/02/2019 22:21

@bumblebeesmum hadn’t thought of Molly, really like that too! No nice middle name or convertible maiden name I’m afraid.

@junebirthdaygirl how do you pronounce Mairead?

@tawdrylocalbrouhaha funny you should say that....Ida was also on my list, but my husband isn’t keen

I think Peggy is a lovely name and it makes me think of the fabulous Peggy Olsen character from Mad Men.

junebirthdaygirl · 20/02/2019 22:54

Mairead, lrish for Margaret is pronounced;
Mur/Aid ..l probably said it wrong in last post. Sometimes its difficult to get the right sound down.
I always thought Molly was short for Mary. At least here in lreland it is.

Sophronia · 20/02/2019 23:01

Maggie
Mamie
Margaretta
Rita
Megan

Pieceofpurplesky · 20/02/2019 23:10

Peggy is a gorgeous name. As is Maggie.

MollyHuaCha · 20/02/2019 23:30

No to Peggy from me.

OK as a diminutive, but not as a complete name.

Happyandglorious · 21/02/2019 07:53

I used my late mother's name as a middle name bc her name was also old fashioned and just felt it would be a heavy burden for my daughter and for me to say and hear my mum's name all the time.
Her first name is connected -both botanical and it is a name I know my mum would have loved.
Would you consider choosing a name you love for a first name and honour your mothe as a middle name?

mathanxiety · 23/02/2019 07:14

Marit (Scandinavian Margaret)
Marketa
Pearl
Pnina or Penina

Agree Molly is a pet form of Mary.

whatstheplanphil · 23/02/2019 07:15

I love the name Peggy.

rosyedith · 24/02/2019 19:44

Peggy is beautiful! Do it x

daisypond · 24/02/2019 20:13

I rather like Peggy, but there are other short forms I think are nicer - Maggie, Meg, etc, etc. But I prefer Margaret. Or Marguerite? Peggy is a style of name that is quite in vogue, I'd say, now. I would never think of Peggy Mitchell.

Poppyfields21 · 24/02/2019 20:18

I might be being dense here but is Daisy a diminutive of Margaret??
