Is Lisa too dated?

Bear with me here! In terms of name styles we like – short, ending in A, we like L names – we realised that if you ignore any attached meaning and just look at the name objectively, Lisa is really great!

Unfortunately most people do not just ignore the meaning/feelings attached to a name though, so... hmph. But is it too soon for Lisa to make a comeback? Bear in mind, it fell out of the top 100 in 1995, so there are very few people under 23 with the name, meaning that by the time my child is 5+, nobody under 30 (maybe even 35/40) will even see it as dated any more. It will just be a fairly unusual name to all those people.

What does mumsnet think? Grin

That's not how it works.

Lisa is a current-mum-name. So most Lisas are in their mid-20s and older and are having kids now or will have them soon.

So if your baby will be born in the next couple of months/years there will be lots of Lisas in her life, they will be the mothers of her classmates. Later at work she will meet lots too. And her classmates will definitely see it as dated as it will be their mum's name, a friend's mum's name etc. That's why it usually takes 100 years for a name to come back.

Naming your daughter Lisa is as if our mums had named us a name from their generation, such as Susan, Barbara or Cheryl.

I feel you because my husband really likes 90s names as well and in general there is nothing wrong with Lisa at all. But ask yourself if you would have liked a name from your mum's generation with all the drawbacks (such people guessing you were older when they read your name somewhere).

You could name her:

Lyra
Lila
Luna
Lana

instead.

Lisa is fine just a different letter order to the currently popular Isla which will be dated in a few short years.

My name is Lisa. Was born 1977. I love my name a few in school had the same name as was popular at the time. I wish I was given a middle name though! Lisa Louise? Lisa Marie? I especially like it when the there’s a ring to the name, first and second name starts with same initials. I hope this will have a come back . Like Laura , Emma , Sarah etc most people call me Leigh. Would I change it No. my Dad give me this name on 3rd August 1977. He was my Hero. Elvis passed away on the 16th . Wish I’d been given the second name of his daughter Marie . Would have prefer Lisa Louise though. I love Lily Louise too 😘 I love Laura , Liza also x

This post is 3 years old!!

It’s nothing-y, same as a lot of those names

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/10/2022 21:00

I love it but it's my name 😍😆. I think it's going to make a comeback. It seems to have not lasted like some of the other names of the 70's/80's but it's still used a lot in the states.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/10/2022 21:02

@Toooldtoworry and @Sessy19 I also knew a couple of not nice Lisa's but there were four in one class, myself included at primary school and I can assure you that some of us are really nice 😊

slowquickstep · 27/10/2022 20:09

Love Lisa and Ainsley needs a comeback too.

soulinablackberrypie · 28/10/2022 10:39

I quite like it and I wouldn't worry about the "datedness" if I really wanted to use it.

  1. It has a pleasingly light and sparkly look and sound
  2. adults might be surprised when they first hear it, but children of the same age won't see anything strange about it

I know a foreign mum who picked it, she was just factoring in its sound. No associations

Was it Chinese. Lisa blends really nice with tradition Chinese names such as Lin and Lee. There's character in mega popular Chinese game called Lisa.

I find Lisa to be sweet name by its sound alone, but it is very strongly dated.

Titsflyingsouth · 28/10/2022 11:29

I like it. It's pretty!

Largethighsbadeyes · 28/10/2022 11:30

I think Lisa is very dated. Add in the Simpsons connection I would avoid

Awumminnscotland · 28/10/2022 11:40

I love Lisa. It was common in the 70s 80s but I think it's definitely on its way back in. Be one of the early ones.

MrJi · 28/10/2022 11:44

I really like it. As a pps says it is another pet name of Elizabeth . So a classic name.
I also don’t know a single Lisa, I have only ever met one actually! (I am in my fifties) .

mumnosbest · 28/10/2022 11:45

I like it

It's beautiful. The fact that's it's 'dated' or 'unfashionable' is a positive! It's not overused and interesting!

Beautiful? The first syllable is Lee - uninspiring boys name and finishing with a Sar sound with is also a bit casual and unexciting.

Dogtooth · 28/10/2022 11:57

I like it.

Lyra, Luna etc are nice enough but tomorrow's Sharons for sure!

There's also Lia which I think is popular in Scandinavian countries...

It’s a really popular Japanese name (though often transliterated as Risa but sounds closer to Lisa).
