Is Lisa too dated?

Bear with me here! In terms of name styles we like – short, ending in A, we like L names – we realised that if you ignore any attached meaning and just look at the name objectively, Lisa is really great!

Unfortunately most people do not just ignore the meaning/feelings attached to a name though, so... hmph. But is it too soon for Lisa to make a comeback? Bear in mind, it fell out of the top 100 in 1995, so there are very few people under 23 with the name, meaning that by the time my child is 5+, nobody under 30 (maybe even 35/40) will even see it as dated any more. It will just be a fairly unusual name to all those people.

What does mumsnet think? Grin

Lyra and Lyla are nice alternatives, suggested^^.

But they are getting quite common now I think, if that bothers you.

How about Louisa?

I don’t think it’s too soon for Lisa o make a come back though. It just doesn’t really appeal to me for some reason...

Butterfly84 · 06/02/2019 11:32

It is way too dated. I agree though that it is a nice name when you forget about it being a 60s/70s name.

What about Lara? Lara is truly lovely.

ChubsyMcChubFace · 06/02/2019 11:34

I really like Laura. Similar era and also an L name ending in A.

Orchidflower1 · 06/02/2019 11:34

I like it! Not common any more but not weird either. Go for it!

Bluearsedfly36 · 06/02/2019 11:44

I'm a Lisa, it's a fab name 😜 and I'm not rude, mean or chavvy either @Sessy19

Poppyfr33 · 06/02/2019 11:52

Does it really matter what other people think, if you like that’s all that matters.

ChubsyMcChubFace · 06/02/2019 11:53

Now you mention it, I DID know a rude and mean Lisa who wasn’t terribly classy!

But I also know a fantastic, well educated, kind Lisa who everyone absolutely loves when they meet her.

I also knew a mean, rude, less than classy Grace, Phoebe, Jennifer, Louise... I could go on.

S’only a name! Means nothing about someone’s character.

I’m sure you’re a lovely Lisa^^.

NorthEndGal · 06/02/2019 11:55

Louisa also eorks

NorthEndGal · 06/02/2019 11:55

Works*

Christmasjammies - you have the same taste in names as my Mum! A Fiona and a Lisa in my family.

I like it OP.

Only reservation I would have now is that it might be too synonymous with Lisa Simpson?

Bluearsedfly36 · 06/02/2019 11:58

Thanks @ChubsyMcChubFace, I actually knew a horrible Lisa too 😂😂😂 but then again most of the girls I went to school with were awful.

autumndreaming · 06/02/2019 11:59

Hmm I think it's dated. I only know middle aged Lisas. I don't think it's a particularly classy name.

Some other ideas:

Lyra
Leah
Lena
Lara
Lana
Lola

mogtheexcellent · 06/02/2019 11:59

Lisa is lovely. I completely forgot about it when doing out list of 3 and 4 letter girls names.

I like lissa as well. The pronouciation is different but still lovely. Hate Liza though but then I used to work with a horrible one so.

Greyhound22 · 06/02/2019 12:00

Go for it I have a lovely Lisa in my family.

I was only saying to my DM the other day it's a shame no one uses it anymore.

Bluearsedfly36 · 06/02/2019 12:00

@autumndreaming I'm 36, not quite there yet 😉

BertBox · 06/02/2019 12:13

I think Lisa is a much prettier name than all the 'newer' ones being suggested here.

JillGoodacre · 06/02/2019 12:14

I'm a Lisa! I'm 40 and I think it's an ok name. I don't think it's ready for a comeback yet though - I'd be delighted if I heard of a newborn with it though! Not often you hear it now

Dandelio · 06/02/2019 12:19

It's a nice name. I much prefer it to names like Ellie, Evie etc.

JillGoodacre · 06/02/2019 12:20

Also @Graphista makes a good point in that it's never shortened

Kokeshi123 · 06/02/2019 12:29

www.nytimes.com/2003/07/06/magazine/where-have-all-the-lisas-gone.html

I think it's a pretty name though. Go for it.

Icklepup · 06/02/2019 12:33

I like it!

TeacupDrama · 06/02/2019 12:33

there is a Lisa in DD's school she is 10 it is a perfectly nice name easy to spell sounds absolutely fine much better than names which will date much worse like Lyla, if you like ti go for it, do not do Lissa though I can't abide unique spellings of normal names

OneAndDoneForNow · 06/02/2019 12:35

It's a nice name and much more unusual than all the Lily's, Leah's etc these days.

tammytoby · 06/02/2019 12:58

Dated is good! It's a refreshing and interesting change from all the Ellies Evies Lillys etc.

Lisa is a beautiful name!

nunonuno1 · 06/02/2019 13:04

Wow, I'm surprised and happy about all the positive feedback! Thanks!!
