Just found out we are having a girl, due in June. We already have a Murdo which everyone says is a great name, so we're struggling to come up with something else as good.

Our criteria are - Scottish/Celtic/Gaelic, Easy to spell, doesn't have any stupid nicknames, unuaual but not unheard of (less than 50 born per year in Scotland).

We have a Mc Surname.

Our current shortlist is
Girls
Ailith
Ailsa
Alba
Eilidh
Heather
Islay
Morven
Rowan
Willow

But not all of them fit the criteria but they give you the idea of the sort of names we like. Looking for any other suggestions!!

No, Willow isn't Scottish, but I quite like it as we are very outdoorsy people.

I forgot to say our wildcard name is Indiana, but it doesn't exactly fit into out criteria, or go well with our surname!!!

I like Mhairi but I have a family member called Mhairi who always complains about how people in England pronounce her name!

Rona will be added to the list, Iona and Skye were vetoed by DH.

Morven is top of my list! What about Marsaili or Fiona?

SunnyScot89 · 30/01/2019 09:01

I think Morven is top for me just now too, I just don't know if it is too close to Murdo.

Can't do Fiona (family reasons) and I think Marsaili is too difficult to spell. I sound like I'm being too picky!!! Sorry!!

I love the name Morag but think Morag Mc..... could be a bit of a mouthful.

BrieAndOatcakes · 30/01/2019 09:51

I don't think it'd be any more of a mouthful than Murdo Mc...?

IVflytrap · 30/01/2019 09:56

Ealasaid
Ailis
Ferelith
Fearne / Fern
Sorcha
Annis
Bonnie
Mirren
Tiree
Eriska

Love Heather, Morven and Rowan out of your list.

GB54 · 30/01/2019 11:58

I like Bonnie and Skye.

thatsmyspace · 30/01/2019 12:01

Rhona

WrapAndRoll · 30/01/2019 12:02

IMHO it's because Murdo ends in a vowel that it flows better than Morag Mc...

Njordsgrrrl · 30/01/2019 12:04

I love Isla. Seen in spelled like the island too.

CantRainAllTheTime · 30/01/2019 12:43

Murron (muh-run)

MaiaRindell · 30/01/2019 13:20

OP - You may know this already but Alba is not pronounced as it looks. It's actually pronounced Alupah.

Breaha
Mhairi
Maisie
Elise
Freya
Greer
Kenzie
Sorcha

SunnyScot89 · 30/01/2019 14:02

I love Masie but my friend has one and wouldn't want to copy!
Morag is nice but reminds me of a weird girl from school.

How would you pronounce Breaha ( is it not Breagha)? Struggling to find a meaning. It's maybe too unusual.

I like Fearne though, I have family in NZ so that would be kind of appropriate too.

I like Meredith, but it was stolen by Disney!!

Lots of good ideas though, thank you!!

Well I also have a Murdo. I don't have any girls but if I did I would call her the Scottish name Dolinda, you can shorten it to Dolly which is cute.
