Just found out we are having a girl, due in June. We already have a Murdo which everyone says is a great name, so we're struggling to come up with something else as good.

Our criteria are - Scottish/Celtic/Gaelic, Easy to spell, doesn't have any stupid nicknames, unuaual but not unheard of (less than 50 born per year in Scotland).

We have a Mc Surname.

Our current shortlist is
Girls
Ailith
Ailsa
Alba
Eilidh
Heather
Islay
Morven
Rowan
Willow

But not all of them fit the criteria but they give you the idea of the sort of names we like. Looking for any other suggestions!!

Merida is not a traditional Scottish name. It's originally from Latin, more recently used in Spanish and is the name of several cities in places where Spanish is spoken , eg in Mexico and the Philippines. It's also a Spanish surname.

Aoife and Grainne are Irish Gaelic, not Scottish.

Meredith is Welsh, and was originally a male name and a surname.

As others have said, Willow is English, not Scottish.

None of this matters at all if the OP likes any of these names, of course.

Rhona was the name I wished I'd been called when I was wee.

My favourite is Eilidh. That would have been DS's name if he had been a girl.

I also like Iona, Rhona, Morven, Mhairi, Flora.

You could go with Morvern instead of Morven which has more of a contrast to Murdo. I love both of them and would have named a DD this if I'd had one.

Islay (spelled this way) is traditionally a male name - plenty of them living on the island! (I have family links so I know a few Grin)

Shona/Seona
Sadie
Caleigh
Ellen
Aileen
Alana
Elspeth
Kirstie

I know Grainne and Aoife are Gaelic, the original post said Gaelic was acceptable

slinkysaluki · 01/02/2019 00:11

How about Ainslie

moredoll · 01/02/2019 00:12

Aoife and Grainne are Irish. Aoife is lovely, Grainne less so.
