Does the name Maris (meaning of the sea) just make you think of a potato? I’m putting together a list and I really like this name, and the meaning, but wondering if it’s too much of a root vegetable name!

Yeah, potato... but having said that, if I met a little child called Maris I’d get over the association pretty damn fast! It’s a lovely name.

borntobequiet · 27/01/2019 19:28

Nice name.

3ChangingForNow · 27/01/2019 19:30

It was our name for DD when I was about 5 months pregnant then we changed our mind. I love it. Yeah people will think potato for all of 5 seconds then get used to it. I'd just go for it.

Aozora13 · 27/01/2019 19:33

Sorry I immediately thought potato too...

My DD’s middle name is Marysia (pronounced ma-rish-uh) which was my late MIL’s name which is kind of similar?

daisypond · 27/01/2019 19:36

i rather like it but I do think potato. Marine? Marina? Marit? Marissa?

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 28/01/2019 08:05

Sounds like she would grow up to be uptight a frigid, IDK. Maybe, I'm just thinking of Frasier. :/

Butterfly84 · 28/01/2019 13:44

Yep, I thought 'piper' as soon as I saw the title. Don't do it. Meris sounds made-up. Don't do that either.

I've known 2 girls called Stella Maris, star of the sea, which I always thought was beautiful. One went by Stella for short, the other by Maris. I don't remember any connection being made with the potato, perhaps because Maris was only half of the name, IYSWIM?

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 16:34

Stella Maris reminds me of churches and schools.

BlueChampagne · 29/01/2019 13:53

It's a barley as well (presumably Maris Lane bred again) so if you like a beer, definitely!

Anya, Cara and Desiree are potatoes too ... and I think there are worse nicknames than Spud. Why not own it from the start?
