Does the name Maris (meaning of the sea) just make you think of a potato? I’m putting together a list and I really like this name, and the meaning, but wondering if it’s too much of a root vegetable name!

Yep, Frasier and potatoes here too. I do like the name Piper though...

notahiker · 27/01/2019 10:45

Potatoes 🥔 sorry

pineapplebryanbrown · 27/01/2019 10:47

I think about Stella Maris - star of the sea which I think is beautiful. Someone told me it used to be a very popular Catholic name.

I don't think of potatoes.

RuthW · 27/01/2019 10:54

Potato! Thought this as soon as I saw the title.

WaitrosePigeon · 27/01/2019 11:16

Potatoes

MikeUniformMike · 27/01/2019 13:59

Middle name Piper.
Marisa is nice.

Birdie6 · 27/01/2019 14:02

The Maris character in Frasier is an unseen character who is spoiled, dominating and neurotic. Anyone who has seen Frasier would recall this name with an unpleasant connotation.

DramaAlpaca · 27/01/2019 14:07

Potato was the first thing I thought of, sorry!

Bananalanacake · 27/01/2019 14:10

I thought you meant Maria but accidentally pressed the key next to the A. Ok, I'm biased, it's my name.

merrybloominchristmas · 27/01/2019 14:11

piper

Freyanna · 27/01/2019 14:11

Potato

I really like Meriel as another poster suggested.

Cookit · 27/01/2019 15:27

Frasier.

Didn’t think of potato until you mentioned it, but I don’t think I’ll ever hear the name and not think of frasier.

BerryTowel · 27/01/2019 15:36

Potato

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 27/01/2019 16:09

Don't go for Meriel, people will insist on reading it as Murial/Mariel/Merida/Merlin and never Meriel. Not ever.

ItsABeatifulDayNow · 27/01/2019 16:44

Frasier for me too!

MrsChollySawcutt · 27/01/2019 16:49

That's utter BS Waitrose, by that logic no-one should ever be called anything other than Susan or John.

GlitterPixie · 27/01/2019 16:50

Potatoes and Frasier

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 27/01/2019 16:57

Piper. Potato.

AnneAnAMouse · 27/01/2019 17:02

It's so Frasier to me also.

But then Margot seems to have taken off.

Melroses · 27/01/2019 17:03

I thought of the part-song Ave Maris Stella

I wouldn't worry about potatoes. My parents did not call me Ailsa due to the onions. Who cares? got another crap name instead, not a vegetable and worse name

ParadiseLaundry · 27/01/2019 17:06

First thought would be Frasier, second would be potato.

It's a shame as it's a really lovely name!

Lipsticktraces · 27/01/2019 17:43

Frasier for me too. One of my favourite shows.

Marnie is lovely and sounds similar?

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 27/01/2019 18:50

@MrsChollySawcutt oh sorry, you're right, my 30 odd years of experiencing this are 'bullshit' Confused

kalefire · 27/01/2019 19:02

I like Marin instead

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 19:05

Mara (also means of the sea)

Malin (like Swedish actress whose surname escapes me)
