Flora with our surname?

Choosinganame · 05/01/2019 13:04

I've name changed for this because I'm mentioning my surname and don't want to out myself.
We are not pregnant yet but thinking about trying for our second soon.

We love the name Flora but our surname is Forde. Does that sound ridiculous? I don't have a problem with alliteration but worried this doesn't sound good.
Considering Florence Forde instead, but I do prefer Flora. Does Florence Forde sound ok?
I like the idea of Flora Bella Forde and her being my little Florabel (I realise this is cutesy and would just be a nice pet name for her when she's small)
Thoughts please!
Our other favourites are:
Alana
Willow
Ciara

I think it’s fine.

purplemunkey · 05/01/2019 13:07

I think it's nice. Flora Forde flows better than Florence Forde IMO.

Choosinganame · 05/01/2019 13:10

Positive so far! Thanks Smile

Flora will always be a margarine to me sorry.

Choosinganame · 05/01/2019 13:13

Cushion - that's another concern. I personally don't think of the margarine but I know some people do. Florence gets round that and we could still call her Flora or Florrie for short.

My children wouldn't be able to tell you that Flora is a margerine and one of them is a teenager.

Flora Forde is lovely. Absolutely lovely. Not keen on Florence.

Icklepup · 05/01/2019 13:19

It's nice

LonelyOversharer · 05/01/2019 13:19

I am biased. Do call your child Flora if it's what you love. My own little Flora will be 11 soon. It is a real, traditional name. Ignore the margerine comments! Honestly, it has come up once in all this time (the school caretaker calls her "Marge" which, as a y6 she considers a badge of honour).

Huge positive is, going up to secondary, I can say with certainty that she will be the only Flora there! No, can you spell that? is it short for something? Just an easy, utterly beautiful name!

And it sounds fine with your surname!

BaronessBomburst · 05/01/2019 13:22

I really like Flora Forde. It flows well.

ReaganSomerset · 05/01/2019 13:24

Sounds nice to me. My name IRL alliterates too!

Choosinganame · 05/01/2019 13:25

That's a lovely post thanks lonely
I agree it's beautiful and also simple and elegant.
She is also likely to have blonde curly hair (if she's anything like our DS) and I can really imagine a little blonde curly haired Flora for some reason.

I much prefer Flora with your surname

landmarkfuture · 05/01/2019 13:25

It's a lovely name. Don't associate with the margarine at all. It's a classic, and flows well with your surname too.

tilder · 05/01/2019 13:28

I love the name Flora. One of my favourites. We didn't use it in the end because of Marge and interflora.

ZebraKid71 · 05/01/2019 14:09

I think it goes well with your surname but don't think it goes well with Bella as a middle name. Both two syllables, both ending in A just doesn't sound right to me. What about Flora Annabel /Isobel? You could still use same nickname.

Choosinganame · 05/01/2019 14:21

I hadn't thought of Interflora. That's not ideal.
We would have a second middle name after Bella that's a family name so think Isobel or Annabel would be a bit long. Thanks though.

It sounds awesome.

Peachesandcream30 · 06/01/2019 16:57

Ugh I can't believe I just said "awesome". It was just a weird reaction - I think that must be a good sign 😂

SuzieAndBess · 06/01/2019 16:59

I think she sounds like a film star!

Fusioluxe · 06/01/2019 17:02

It sounds strong and independent and fabulous!

I didn’t even know there was a margarine called Flora. Who buys margarine these days?!

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 06/01/2019 17:04

I know a lovely young teenage Flora - never thought about the Marge etc. Goes really well with your name - go for it!

Hanab · 06/01/2019 17:05

I like the french ‘version’ Fleur

Choosinganame · 06/01/2019 17:27

Wow some great responses Smile
I'm hoping the margarine association will fade away.

I absolutely love the name Flora, but won’t ever be able to use it unfortunately. The ‘interflora’ is something my mum warned me about as she went to school with a very attractive Flora, and the boys used to talk about wanting to get ‘Interflora’ Hmm Hopefully that is an old joke though!

I think Flora Forde is absolutely fine (I agree with a PP that it sounds like a film star!) but if I’m honest I’m not overly keen on Flora Bella. I really like both individually but I think it sounds a bit twee with them together. If she’s having two middle names could you have Bella as the second one?

I appreciate you weren’t really asking about that though, so feel free to ignore! Smile

TheCag · 06/01/2019 17:50

I think it’s a lovely name combo. Reminds me of Flora Poste from Cold Comfort Farm which is an excellent book!
