Thoughts on our shortlist (and pronunciation)?

I posted earlier about Indian names and we have some current favourites. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the names in general, how you’d pronounce them, and if anything looks problematic with nicknames and such.

Lakshmi/Laxmi
Shivani
Priyanka

Thanks!

I’ve always wondered about Priyanka because how I would pronounce it seems very harsh Xmas Blush

KarinandtheSeaUrchins · 29/12/2018 20:40

I think they're all lovely! Personally I love Priya and Nanthini too.

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/12/2018 20:41

Lovely names. Priyanka is my favourite. I also love Shruti

FogCutter · 29/12/2018 20:42

All beautiful names.

I like Lakshmi best.

meow1989 · 29/12/2018 20:44

I think priyanka is very pretty and would pronounce it pre-yank-ah.

The others i would say as shiv-ah-nee and lack-shm-ee, I hope that's right Blush

Smizzlediz · 29/12/2018 20:49

I think Shivani is gorgeous and the others are nice too! I’d go for Priyanka next as I like Priya as a shortening, and Lakshmi as 3rd choice and I think this spelling looks nicer.

I also like Eshani if you’re looking for other options 😊 (sorry I haven’t read the other thread!)

MiddleClassProblem · 29/12/2018 20:59

Lakshmi is my fave. We had Ila and Kalyani on our list x

E20mom · 29/12/2018 21:05

Shevani is lovely.

E20mom · 29/12/2018 21:05

Oops sorry iPhone typo

MaraW · 29/12/2018 22:06

I didn't expect such a positive response, thank you! Looks like we can't go wrong with whichever one we choose.

Lakshmi or Priyanka! Beautiful names.

PenelopeFlintstone · 29/12/2018 22:26

People will pronounce Lakshmi/Laxmi differently to each other though, I think. Is that okay? One with a 'sh' in the middle and one without.

MaraW · 30/12/2018 20:02

@PenelopeFlintstone thanks for pointing that out. I’m not sure people would pronounce either of them correctly, I just don’t want any pronunciations that sound bad or have a negative connotation. I think most people here would say Lack-shmee when I would say something more like Luck-shmee.

I love Priyanka.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 31/12/2018 08:20

Shivani is my fav!

lottiegarbanzo · 31/12/2018 08:28

Really nice.

I think some people might trip over Lakshmi at first (I'd pronounce as written, Laksh-mi). Laxmi (lax- me) sounds different to me, is it meant to?

noego · 31/12/2018 08:34

One of my spiritual names is close to Priyanka. I would pronounce it

Pree- yarnka.

It is close to "the beloved one" in Sanskrit or amiable, lovable.

PenelopeFlintstone · 31/12/2018 14:25

Lack-shmee that's exactly what I would've said, not Luck-schmee.

SemperIdem · 31/12/2018 17:02

I think Priyanka is very pretty. Would you shorten it to Priya? I work with two Priya’s, their full name (in both cases) is Priyadarshini rather than Priyanka, I think it’s such a pretty sounding name.

Lakshmi and Shivani are both lovely too.

SusieQ5604 · 31/12/2018 17:47

Why Indian names? Are you Indian or just like the names? I find them hard to read/pronounce.

MaraW · 01/01/2019 01:50

@SemperIdem we hadn’t really decided if we’d shorten it to Priya or not, but I think that others might do that naturally.

@SusieQ5604 yes, I’m Indian.

All names are most lovely and pretty. I also like Naya and

boydoggies · 01/01/2019 01:57

Nayana and Preeti.

coolwalking · 01/01/2019 02:02

DC has a Priyanka in her class and I think it's a lovely name. Haven't heard it being pronounced in a harsh way at all

Astronica · 01/01/2019 04:23

I like Priyanka and Lakshmi best, though they're all nice. I don't like the Laxmi spelling as much though.
