I've always had such a soft spot for the name Genevieve, however, after mentioning to friends and family we've had such negative feedback.

What are your thoughts? :)

I love it.
The only "problem" is that some will pronounce it Gen-a-veev while others will call it Jzon-a-viev the French way. They're very different sounding names.

ZebraKid71 · 08/12/2018 08:37

I love it. My favourite names are those that are slightly unusual but can be shortened to more normal nicknames. The one I know goes by Gen.

Luckingfovely · 08/12/2018 08:52

Love it. Go for what you want. I have one child with a very unusual name, and no one could ever imagine them as anything else now.

Another lesson in NOT telling anyone your chosen names before the baby is born.

yikesanotherbooboo · 08/12/2018 08:53

It's a lovely name

gummibears · 08/12/2018 10:59

Isn't it pronounced Je ne viève? I've never heard it pronounced Je ne veev? That sounds so wrong to my ears.

ladybee28 · 08/12/2018 11:04

It's my favourite girl's name – love it love it love it.

Chic, elegant, warm, and a whole world of nicknames that she can choose her favourite from as a youngster – Ginny, Vivi, Eve... and then crack out the full name for when she wants to be taken seriously as a grown woman.

It is a BOLD name, so I think people tend to find it hard to get their heads around, especially when they picture a tiny baby. But they're not babies for long!

GoneFishingNC · 08/12/2018 11:08

Unfortunately it’s not one of those French names that is easily appropriated into English (there are lots of French names that do “cross over” well, I’m from a French family so we have used lots of them between us.)

To my ears, the English pronunciation of Genevieve is just wrong.
It’s a French name and needs to be pronounced in the French way, otherwise it’s just grating. But that’s probably just me!

Ploppymoodypants · 08/12/2018 11:10

Oh it’s a lovely beautiful name. Go for it.
Nn Ginny or Eve or Evie

FartnissEverbeans · 08/12/2018 11:12

Gorgeous!

christmaspuddingyumyumyum · 08/12/2018 11:21

Lovely but the only one I know now gets Gen (said Jen)

I agree and I'm not French! It sounds beautiful pronounced Je ne vee ev (Je ne viève).

tammytoby · 08/12/2018 11:46

I agree - it sounds beautiful in French. Not keen on Jen e veev at all.

Reggie24 · 08/12/2018 11:48

I love it, and I love the nickname Gigi.

villainousbroodmare · 08/12/2018 11:50

Love it and its many variants.

LAlady · 08/12/2018 11:51

I think it's lovely. I know one ego is known as Genie.

LAlady · 08/12/2018 11:52

ego should be "who" !

tammytoby · 08/12/2018 12:01

It's beautiful, especially the French pronunciation

bastardkitty · 08/12/2018 12:03

It's lovely and I prefer the English pronunciation.

ocomeallyevipers · 08/12/2018 12:58

Loved this name but my husband's thick regional accent made it a no go.

Astronica · 08/12/2018 13:09

Genevieve is a lovely name and a long term favourite of mine. It's not 'too much' at all! I would just keep it under wraps until you announce the name at the baby's birth otherwise everyone will have an (unwanted) opinion and just make it hard for you to listen to your own insight.

MadameJosephine · 08/12/2018 13:09

Totally know where you’re coming from. It’s a beautiful name but we just couldn’t agree on which way to pronounce it and I couldn’t shake the idea that it was just a teeny bit pretentious but I can’t say why I feel like that. In the end we settled on Jennifer instead

GrumpyOlderBloke · 08/12/2018 13:13

Beware of older petrolheads to whom Genevieve will forever be a Darracq:

Bit like calling her Mercèdés.

Polkasq · 08/12/2018 17:36

I don't like it and to me it does seem OTT. Just down to personal taste though, and it does seem reasonably popular these days.

firstbrightday · 08/12/2018 18:54

I don't think it's too much at all, I know quite a few Genevieves. Lots of good potential nicknames too.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 08/12/2018 18:56

I loved it. Sentimental name wanted it for one of my twins but my husband was against it. So it’s a middle name I love it :)
