How would you pronounce Seren?

Would you/do you pronounce Seren like Derren, or more like Sur-en?

I've never actually met anyone with the name so not entirely sure. We have assumed the second pronunciation, and are pretty set on it for our daughter, but I'm worried we'll be pronouncing it wrong and would sound totally stupid to welsh people.

I would say Serren, with the emphasis on the first syllable. SERRen.

Stabbitha · 30/11/2018 17:58

Like Derren.

Watto1 · 30/11/2018 17:59

Seren to rhyme with Derren. Being in Wales, I tend to roll the r a bit but not a problem if you don't.

Wingingthis · 30/11/2018 17:59

I worked in a class with a girl names seren. Pronounced SEH-REN :) like seven

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 30/11/2018 17:59

Sur enn

ZebraKid71 · 30/11/2018 17:59

Sar-ren, like derren. definitely not sur-en.

KittyConCarne · 30/11/2018 18:00

Hi OP,
We're not Welsh, but know 2 Seren's- both pronounced to rhyme with Derren.
DD1 also used to love a kiddies TV programme with an animal character named Seren, which also rhymed with Derren.
Hopefully some people with Welsh knowledge will be along shortly.
Love the name by the way Smile

Pinkgin50 · 30/11/2018 18:00

I've got a friend with a little girl called Seren and she pronounces it Serren . Before that, I would probably have said it as Sairen .

ZebraKid71 · 30/11/2018 18:01

Seh-ren is actually a better way of how I'd pronounce it, just seen above!

BertramKibbler · 30/11/2018 18:02

It’s pronounced Serren. Loads of them round here on the NW welsh boarder!

MrMeSeeks · 30/11/2018 18:05

Sur-ren

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/11/2018 18:06

Darren.
It's a gorgeous name, my friend has a Seren.

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/11/2018 18:07

Derren ffs.
Dumb auto correct.

crimsonlake · 30/11/2018 18:11

The e is pronounced as it's sound not it's name. It means star, but I am sure you know that already.

RosiePosies · 30/11/2018 18:13

Ahh ok. We've assumed the wrong pronunciation! 😂

Quite a few in Scotland too - lovely name

DerfelCadarn · 30/11/2018 18:15

Another one from the Welsh contingent here - it's 'Serren'

Confusedbeetle · 30/11/2018 18:16

Personally, I would always steer clear of a name with pronunciation variations/difficulties. People will always get it wrong and your child will be annoyed to distraction. Children don't need that sort of annoyance

RosiePosies · 30/11/2018 18:30

Thanks everyone. We definitely can't call her snake and pronounce it differently to the Welsh way. Maybe we'll go with Suren, not so keen on the Derren way of saying it, I think if we were Welsh or rolled our r's it would sound gorgeous but we've just got boring southern accents and wouldn't do it justice 😢

RosiePosies · 30/11/2018 18:31

Terrible autocorrect fail - Seren not snake

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/11/2018 18:33

Seren is a lovely name, pronounced Seh-Ren to rhyme with Derren. Means star

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/11/2018 18:33

I know a couple here in the south and it still sounds lovely. Please dont make up the name Suren, it’ll annoy her forever

PhaLANge · 30/11/2018 18:36

Seren like derren.

I love this name and this was going to be ds2's name if he were a girl. I love the way it sounds, the look of it written down and that it means star. Not having anymore now so can't use it ☹️ not keen on 'Suren' myself but if you love it that's all that matters.

Lineeye · 30/11/2018 18:37

Like ‘Sarah’ with an ‘n’ on the end.

RosiePosies · 30/11/2018 18:38

@BuffaloCauliflower problem is where we're from (south east) Derren is pronounced differently to welsh pronunciation - it's said more like 'derun' so would be more like 'Serun' 😕
