How would you pronounce Seren?

Would you/do you pronounce Seren like Derren, or more like Sur-en?

I've never actually met anyone with the name so not entirely sure. We have assumed the second pronunciation, and are pretty set on it for our daughter, but I'm worried we'll be pronouncing it wrong and would sound totally stupid to welsh people.

Round my way (Wales) the emphasis is on the first syllable and it sounds more like Sa (like Sarah) -wren

empmalswa · 30/11/2018 18:39

See-ren.

KatherinaMinola · 30/11/2018 18:40

I pronounce it Seren to rhyme with Derren but I have heard Welsh people say it more like SAIR-en, with a more definite sounding of the first syllable.

RosiePosies · 30/11/2018 18:41

So... if I pronounced it like Serun that is also wrong?

I have looked on YouTube but can't find any pronunciations.

I’m in the south east, Serun is probably a good way of how I’d say it. It’s not 100% right but it won’t be out of a welsh accent and I think Serun is fine.

PaddyF0dder · 30/11/2018 18:46

Sah-ren.

Like the deadly poisonous gas.

Shadow1234 · 30/11/2018 19:02

I also live in the SE, and never met anyone with this name - but I absolutely love it, and have always assumed it is pronounced like the first part of the word serendipity (so it does sound like 'un' at the end) the same as derren does. (If that makes sense)

(Have a look at you tube videos of Derren Brown, and you will hear how he says his name).

Themillandbakery · 30/11/2018 19:15

Seren is the welsh word for star. Lovely name and know a few Seren's
Pronounced as Se REN

Watto1 · 30/11/2018 19:15

I'm Welsh and living in Wales. I wouldn't object to a non-Welsh person saying Serun. I'm a Helen (I pronounce it Hellin) but often get Hellun. I don't mind at all.

daisypond · 30/11/2018 19:42

How about Suranne? Is that more like the sound you want? As in the actress Suranne Jones. (has nothing to do with Seren or stars though)

starandson · 30/11/2018 19:42

Seh-rin is how I say it but I’m not sure if that’s right.

AvoidingMarking · 30/11/2018 20:08

Like serendipity- try YouTubing the pronunciation of that?

RedDwarves · 30/11/2018 20:39

Seren like serendipity.

Sophronia · 30/11/2018 20:49

Seh-ren.

Fayrazzled · 30/11/2018 20:53

I teach a Seren. Her family pronounce it Suh-REN with the emphasis on the second syllable.

SemperIdem · 30/11/2018 22:19

Imagine Serena pronounced with a French accent and then drop a sound.

I do know Welsh people who pronounce it the way you would, if that helps, op.

RosiePosies · 30/11/2018 23:15

That's what we were going for @Fayrazzled - is it a welsh family?

Seren rhymes with heron

I love it, if I'd had another daughter it would have been her name.

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/12/2018 00:24

Yes that’s a good way to put it. With a south east accent Seren rhymes with Heron. Suh-ren doesn’t seem right at all.
