I'm really struggling with this!!!! Have managed to come up with a list of names that would "do" but there's not yet anything I love...

What do you think of the following names?

Carmen - bit meh?
Emerald - kind of Disney-esque? DH loves it though
Olive - my fave but can't convince DH
Vera
Audrey - also love this but DH not so sure
Valentina - LOVE this but feel it's too long (and don't like Val/Tina) so potential middle name?
Olympia
Alice - too boring?
Marnie - i think this is nice but DH says it's chavvy (think he's thinking of Armani!)
Jane - too plain?
Erin
Topsy

Alyce instead of Alice?
Or Aubrey instead of Audrey?
I live Elsie

SylviaAndSidney · 29/11/2018 12:21

Ooh I like Audrey.

harleyquinnx · 29/11/2018 12:22

I love Audrey was my nans name if I had a girl I was going to use it Audrey Hepburn is very hip in trendy right now too. X

Mymycherrypie · 29/11/2018 12:24

Marnie is the name of an Alfred Hitchcock film but whenever I say this to people they look at me like I am mad. They probably just heard it off their mates sisters kid or something so assume it is common. I think it’s a lovely name.

But then I’d also be the one singing Suddenly Seymour at your Audrey (which I think is the second best on your list.)

I also like Valentine over Valentina and you may not get the Tina shortening?

itbemay · 29/11/2018 12:25

Olive is lovely
Marnie is cute
Topsy?!

Sophronia · 29/11/2018 12:26

I like Vera and Emerald best. I know an Emerald who goes by Em. I also like Jane, Alice, Audrey and Carmen.

IVflytrap · 29/11/2018 12:31

Topsy??? Grin

Carmen is lovely. I like Valentina although find it a little long/frilly. I love Audrey, think it's a great name, and quite like Vera and Jane. Alice and Olive are OK. Erin is nice.

Not keen on the rest.

detachablehoof · 29/11/2018 12:45

LOL why does nobody like Topsy?? I wish it didn't have the Topsy & Tim connotations - I think it's lovely!!

Thanks for weighing in everyone.

@apositivemind Aubrey is top of our shortlist for if we have a boy!! My main concern is that it sounds like a girls name... (it's not, is it?!)

@mycherrypie isn't Valentine the male version? I do love it though and it's one less syllable too...

Topsy is a dog's name.

I absolutely hate Olive and do not understand the love for it on MN. It's a really ugly name.

Audrey, Alice and Carmen are the nicest from your list.

sheswhat · 29/11/2018 12:50

Jane

Frosty66611 · 29/11/2018 12:51

Topsy is really awful.
Really don’t like Olive or Olympia either.
Emerald is a bit cutsie but could get shortened to Emma/Emmie which are both pretty.
I love Alice, Erin, Marnie and Audrey from you list. Jane is nice but prefer Janie

PazRaz10 · 29/11/2018 12:55

How about Elin, rather than Erin?

LarkDescending · 29/11/2018 12:56

I like Alice and Carmen from your list - and either would work fabulously with Valentine/a in the middle.

starandson · 29/11/2018 12:57

Love Valentina but you’d have to like Val/Tina to go for it. I like Audrey.
Erin and Alice are nice but quite plain.
What about Pearl?

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 29/11/2018 12:59

Alice Valentina Jane would be a great combination.

Not keen on most of your names, tbh, OP.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 29/11/2018 13:00

Topsy is an upper-class nickname (not a given name).
Aubrey is definitely a boy's name, and I'm not at all sure where the sudden love for Audrey has come from.
Olive and Marnie are very, very, very of the moment.
Erin's quite nice. Quite cool and feminine and strong.

RavenWings · 29/11/2018 13:03

Carmen - very pretty
Emerald - a bit Disney imo
Olive - horrible
Vera - nah
Audrey - nice
Valentina - love it, but don't do it if you won't like Val or Tina.
Olympia
Alice - yes, boring
Marnie - ok
Jane - love it. Very refreshing among the hordes of Millie, Mia, Olivia etc names.
Erin - nah
Topsy - godawful, a joke of a name for anything other than a rabbit.

RavenWings · 29/11/2018 13:04

Oh, I forgot Olympia! Well...I don't like it. It would be nice on a barge or a Clysedale, but not for a person.

slappinthebass · 29/11/2018 13:09

You've got quite a mix in terms of popularity there! Compare your list on Dark Greener names to check trends, that way you can avoid faddy names. I taught a Topsy once, she had a twin sister Tallulah, I presumed the parents were theatre/old movie fans, but this was before the Topsy and Tim revival. I like it, but I think not a good idea while Topsy and Tim is still shown on CBeebies. Marnie is really pretty.

How about:
Emmeline
Emmie
Vivienne
Violet (very popular ATM though)
Camilla
Ottilie
Orla
Cecily

slappinthebass · 29/11/2018 13:11

Daphne?

APositiveMind · 29/11/2018 13:13

See, my mum also thinks Aubrey is a boys name but I've never seen a male called Aubrey, but I know loads of Aubrey that are girls, I had to Google it and it cameo with mostly girls! Maybe it's a name like Jamie? More common of a boys name but do see some girls!

Mymycherrypie · 29/11/2018 13:45

Valentine is the male version but it’s so little used that you could probably get away with it is if you were really against Tina. You could say it was unisex and a lot of people would never know.

RiverTam · 29/11/2018 13:49

Aubrey is definitely a boys' name, more popular in the past, Aubrey Beardsley being a notable example.

Cbeebiesrehab · 29/11/2018 15:17

Aubrey is definitely a boys name but is one that is now being used more commonly for girls-it’s in a similar vain to Evelyn I feel, people will assume girl.
From your list I would pick Audrey or Erin. Not Topsy.

Disfordarkchocolate · 29/11/2018 15:21

Lyvia?
