I'm expecting my second child next Spring, and currently love Nia for a girl. What do you think? Do you know many little girls called Nia? I don't know any.

My son has a common Welsh name (think Dylan/Thomas but not those actual names).

I know a Nia (rhymes with Mia). As far as I'm aware she has not had to correct people thinking it's Mia. I always thought it was a beautiful name.

ZebraKid71 · 24/11/2018 19:33

It depends where you're living, I know quite a few Welsh Nias, all mid thirties, I think it is viewed as pretty dated in Wales. That saying, I do like it.

WishfulSprouts · 24/11/2018 19:34

I used to work with a Nia fiesty ambitious and very clever I think it’s a fab strong unusual name 👍

TroysMammy · 24/11/2018 19:37

As a nod to being Welsh my cousin who lives in America called his daughter Nia.

purplecorkheart · 24/11/2018 19:48

I really like it. The only time I have heard of it before was on a reality tv show that I binged on when sick (Dance Moms).

DramaAlpaca · 24/11/2018 19:49

It's a pretty name.

starzig · 24/11/2018 20:30

Love it but reminds me of dance moms

CloserIAm2Fine · 24/11/2018 20:36

Nia on Dance Moms seems like such a lovely girl, so I don’t think it’s a bad association! And her mom Holly was always the one mom who never swore and was always getting the kids out of the room when confrontations were going on.

CloserIAm2Fine · 24/11/2018 20:38

chocolate sorry, I wasn’t sure from your post if you were in Wales or England! In Wales there won’t be any confusion with Mia, I actually know more Nias than Mias!

tinytemper66 · 24/11/2018 20:40

It is lovely but then I am Welsh with a traditional Welsh name!

SemperIdem · 24/11/2018 21:37

It’s a lovely name. One of my closest friends is a Nia.

AliCanTea · 25/11/2018 00:37

It's sweet but I'd just hear 'near'.

FogCutter · 25/11/2018 01:05

Pretty name.

SallyWD · 25/11/2018 07:57

I know one Nia.the family live one gla D but have Welsh connections. This Nia is 10

Howtodeal · 25/11/2018 08:00

I know several Nias (live in Wales obvs!) including a little girl. It's a beautiful name

Howtodeal · 25/11/2018 08:04

I also think if you're in Wales you won't get any mix up with Mia, either spelling or pronunciation. For non Welshies, the difference is along the lines of Mee-ya vs Nee-ah with a sharp inflection up on the ah like the a in apple

Syvilla · 25/11/2018 09:26

Makes me think of Nia from Dance Moms

Polkasq · 25/11/2018 09:36

It's OK, although a bit insubstantial.

snidgetowl · 25/11/2018 10:31

I had 4 girls called Nia in my year at school in the 1990s. I know 3 in their teens, and one toddler. I think it's lovely, and if you are Welsh and live in Wales it won't get confused with Mia.

AlliKaneErikson · 25/11/2018 11:05

I know several (S.Wales) ranging from newborn to middle aged. Lovely name.

Cuzcothellama · 25/11/2018 11:08

I like it a lot. I like. Nina even better, although that's not a Welsh name!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 25/11/2018 11:10

I know one,
Niah is also nice as is Naigo Smile

newrubylane · 25/11/2018 15:12

Just to add, in some parts of the country it sounds very close to the pronunciation of 'near'.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 25/11/2018 15:18

Nia is the newest member of Thomas the Tank Engine's Steam Team.

She's Samurai X and later in her arc, the water ninja in Lego's Ninjago so would get a big thumbs up from this house.
