Nia

I'm expecting my second child next Spring, and currently love Nia for a girl. What do you think? Do you know many little girls called Nia? I don't know any.

My son has a common Welsh name (think Dylan/Thomas but not those actual names).

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

What a pretty name. I've not heard of anyone with it personally x

ShowOfHands · 24/11/2018 15:09

The only Nia I know is mid thirties and is known by a nickname. I'd known her for 3 years before I found out she was actually called Nia.

CloserIAm2Fine · 24/11/2018 15:11

It’s lovely

I know a few but then I live in Wales! I did know a Nia growing up in England though, it works well outside of Wales too as its easy to pronounce.

HopeAndJoy16 · 24/11/2018 15:11

Does it rhyme with Mia, or is it N-eye-a?
I prefer the latter, and think it's really pretty. If it's the former then i would be worried you/your child will be forever correcting people

Verbena87 · 24/11/2018 15:17

I’ve met one, she’s a teenager and one of the most articulate, intelligent and witty students I’ve had the pleasure to teach, so I’d say go ahead.

MikeUniformMike · 24/11/2018 15:26

Very popular in Wales in the 1960s and 1970s.
Pretty. It's the same as the Irish Niamh.
It's pronounced Nee-ah not Nee-uh.

Cosmoa · 24/11/2018 15:32

Isn't Niamh pronounced Neave?

Chocolateheaven123 · 24/11/2018 15:35

Closer we live in Wales Grin I've never come across anyone with the name though oddly enough, even in playgroups etc.

I like it. I don't know any personally.

hoping2018 · 24/11/2018 16:15

I know one mid thirties doctor with the name. I love it!!

DeRigueurMortis · 24/11/2018 16:18

Another who thinks it's lovely Grin

Pimpernell · 24/11/2018 16:25

There seem to be a lot of Nia/Naia/Naya/Mia/Maya names about at the moment. They're all nice enough but I sometimes have to think before I can remember who's Nia and who's Naia.

chumbal · 24/11/2018 16:27

I know a primary aged Nia.

I think it will be confused with Mia.

Sorry Sad

RavenWings · 24/11/2018 16:27

I think it's pretty but it blends into Tia/Mia/Pia etc names. All nice enough but nothing special about them.

OlennasWimple · 24/11/2018 16:29

I've not heard it before, but I like it.

userabcname · 24/11/2018 16:33

I have taught a couple - very close to the Welsh border here though so do get quite a few Welsh names. It is pretty although quite similar to the Mya/Maya/Mia names which seem to be every other girl at the moment!

MeAndTheMajor · 24/11/2018 16:38

I absolutely love it and wanted it for one of my DDs.

However DH vetoed it on the basis that people would say Nia and far 🙄

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 24/11/2018 17:15

Not substantial enough for me. Too wishy washy.

DeeStopia · 24/11/2018 17:17

I am Welsh and although it's a nice name, it would feel odd for a baby for me- there were three in my class at school in the early 90s, so sounds to me a bit like calling a baby Kevin or Clive.

Mummytoboyxx · 24/11/2018 18:40

I like it Smile

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/11/2018 18:42

I know of two in London-there’s an actress called Nia Long
Lovely name, prefer it to Mia which is more popular

BikeRunSki · 24/11/2018 18:47

I work with a welsh lady called Nia. She must be mid 30s. We work in Yorkshire - people mispronounce her name as Naya (to rhyme with fire) a lot.

ImNotAFlower · 24/11/2018 18:53

This is my best friends daughters name she is 16. She has never had a problem with it being pronounced incorrectly.
I love it it's a lovely name.

jq28 · 24/11/2018 18:56

There's a niah round here. I like it

LavenderBush · 24/11/2018 18:58

It's a nice name, but I think she will spend her life saying, "No, not Mia, Nia."
