Suspect the answer will be yes but have you considered that both names are very similar and both names carry initial confusion for anyone who doesn’t know them well and that confusion is around the first syllable ! Given all of that (despite difference in age) I’d reconsider personally. I can see however you seem quite wedded to this name. I too think Rhea is the name. If you want a different pronunciation don’t introduce any hs anywhere - they don’t bring about your desired sound.

Rhaegar Targaryen is a male (dead!) character in GoT, but it's sometime shorted to Rhae and his family use a lot of 'ae' spellings!

twolalala · 26/10/2018 07:38

I know a Rayer.

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 07:46

@HeronLanyon - my family are Irish, we love a good name spelling

Yes I'm certain on the name.. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it is ours and iv heard far more offensive to the ears names .. it's just more of finding the best spelling for it.. while still keeping it unique but not overly complicated.

Raiya...?

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 07:57

Husband rolled his eyes at me and said Raya is best... so that's what we'll go for haha

Thanks ladies for all your help xx

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 08:04

'Plus as Rafe gets older his friends might call him Ray as a nickname. As might Raya’s.'

Exactly

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 08:08

@MarthasGinYard Rafe is 18... firmly asks to be called Rafe.

OP posts:
MarthasGinYard · 26/10/2018 08:12

'Iv a boy called Rafe ( Ray-f) so I'm used to explaining the name lol-'

This made me think it was a small dc not an adult

Sorry

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 08:15

@MarthasGinYard no need to be sorry 😬

Names are so divisive on MN as everyone has an opinion or loves/loathes a name. I can accept name choices are a personal choice and what works for one family doesn't work for another - it's all good.

I'm just stuck on the best way to spell it... xx

I really like the name OP, I’ve not heard it before but I think it’s pretty! I like Rayah for the spelling

Hundredacrewoods · 26/10/2018 10:07

Is there any chance you'd like the name Saraya, nickname Raya?

GemmeFatale · 26/10/2018 11:49

I think if someone told me their kids were called Rafe and Raya I’d assume they were joking.

Why would you do that to your children?

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 12:10

@GemmeFatale ugh... why come on here if you've nothing positive to contribute- bore off back to your hole!

Didn't ask for anyone's opinions on names!

OP posts:
TheGrassIsGreener3 · 26/10/2018 12:52

I would pronounce Rhae as Ray.

If you want it to be pronounced Ray-a, you need to go with Raya or Rayah.

TheGrassIsGreener3 · 26/10/2018 12:53

I also love Saraya!

TheGrassIsGreener3 · 26/10/2018 12:55

bore off back to your hole!

OP, most posters on the baby names thread want opinions on their suggested names. You have put your baby names on here so you can't be surprised when people express their opinions (asked for or not).

fantasmasgoria1 · 26/10/2018 13:05

I have heard of raye or that

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 13:07

@TheGrassIsGreener3 - I wouldn't give an opinion I'm not asked for, it's rude. And if I was I'd do it positively... but hey, what's manners between strangers!

I see far too much bashing on MN.. I'm all for free speech, but sometimes people are just spiteful with no real intentions other than to just be mean and cause a debate!

If I'd asked - what do people think of this name.. then fair game ( but still don't be a dick about it)

But I didn't... I asked for spelling suggestions... perhaps a re-read of the question would have been beneficial!

Either way... Raya is what I'M happy with...

Xx

Rafe is easy, I can’t see how people wouldn’t know how to say it (but obviously some people must have!)
Rhae would be Ray, Rhea would be ree ah.You might get people mistakenly calling Raya, Rayma but once people know they’ll say the right name. She’ll find people misspell her name all her life, but the same can be said for loads of more common names (Alison, Kathryn, Alisdair etc)

TatianaLarina · 26/10/2018 14:31

Rafe and Raya are almost the same name with a different ending.

Reminds me of the poor woman on here called Olivia whose brother was Oliver.

florafawna · 26/10/2018 14:44

Rhea would get teased, I think diarrhoea, etc. Sad

Also Rhea is a bird:

A rhea went on the lam in the U.K.—and is far from the first giant, flightless bird to do so

GemmeFatale · 26/10/2018 17:26

@tatianalarina exactly.
