A friend of mine is due in a few weeks with a girl - she's set on the name Panda. I questioned it at first, & she is insistent that it is no different to the increasingly used names Bear, Fox, Wolf etc, etc... I have got used to it and it is slightly growing on me but still can't shake the thought that she's going to get hurt at bad reactions!! Does anyone on here having anything positive to say about it? 😂

(I have suggested Pandora nn Panda but she's not sold at all) Hmm

Fine as a nn for Amanda or Pandora. On its own, just no.

Aprilislonggone · 20/10/2018 12:42

AfterSchoolWorry what about Wanka for a boy??

IzzyGrey · 20/10/2018 12:45

Even as a nickname I think it's horrible. Also pandas are cute but they're huge, slovenly, greedy and pretty stupid - not exactly an animal I'd like to be named after! Haha. (Saying that I'd not like to be named after any animal. I think this new animal naming this is awful!)

Kokeshi123 · 20/10/2018 12:48

Christ almighty--does she realize she is naming a human being?

Bear and Fox etc. are pretty stupid too, quite honestly.

MikeUniformMike · 20/10/2018 13:44

I think it's great. She could have a sibling called Bear or Koala or Roo or something.

puppymouse · 20/10/2018 14:08

My sister was nearly named Panda. Think she's quite relieved it was DF's turn to choose the name as she has a very normal traditional name instead!

Pemba · 20/10/2018 14:18

Pandas are not greedy! They have to keep eating all day because there is so little nutrition in the bamboo. Would you say cows are greedy for eating grass all day?

Having now stuck up for pandas, I agree that they are cute animals but Panda is a bloody stupid name for a human being.

flumpybear · 20/10/2018 14:22

Is your friend 15? Ridiculous! Can you imagine them growing up to be a doctor or barrister? No, they'd be stymied by their idiot parents giving them a fucking ridiculous name - perhaps they should consider renaming themselves to Cockwomble

Cachailleacha · 20/10/2018 14:26

Great comparison! It is like calling your child Cow.

MaruMaru · 20/10/2018 14:28

Fabulous animal. Ridiculous name. Beg her not to.

Might be cute for a few weeks for a newborn... but a child grows up. Would SHE like to be called Panda as an adult???!!!???

MikeUniformMike · 20/10/2018 15:02

I think she should panda to her whim.

How about Pandora or Amanda nn Panda

Ohyesiam · 20/10/2018 15:08

I can’t believe that someone would do that to a child. So unkind

Icklepup · 20/10/2018 15:08

Only for a NN for Pandora

ADastardlyThing · 20/10/2018 15:09

Bear fox and wolf are hideous enough but Panda?

LonginesPrime · 20/10/2018 15:15

Provided the child will be going to an independent school, I don't think it's more out there than other similar names..

DuckofDoom · 20/10/2018 17:16

I love it as a nickname for Pandora but there’s no way an adult can go through life called Panda!

BruegelTheElder · 21/10/2018 02:44

I like it

MarcieBluebell · 21/10/2018 02:50

O ffs.

Panda.

Mooncupdotcom · 21/10/2018 02:52

Fiat?

SerendipityFelix · 21/10/2018 03:02

Pandas are greedy animals, because they hog a massively disproportionate amount of conservation funding given they are just generally fairly crap at survival/breeding anyway. Just because they look cute and their babies do surprisingly loud sneezes. Bloody pandas.

frogface69 · 21/10/2018 03:06

I had a cat called Panda.
My neighbour is calling her baby Oak.
Madness.

MrsEricBana · 21/10/2018 03:17

Yikes. I struggle with names like Autumn, Summer, April etc too.

WelcomeToGreenvale · 21/10/2018 18:03

Kimya Dawson's daughter is Panda, I kind of like it!

PippilottaLongstocking · 21/10/2018 18:19

WelcomeToGreenvale just came on here to say that!

I think people don’t react as badly to unusual names as mumsnet would make you believe, I’ve met people with all sorts of unusual names but once you get to know the person you just get used to the name and it doesn’t seem odd any more

babswindsor · 21/10/2018 18:24

As I read this thread, the name is growing on me. I think it's quite a nice name.
