Sheila/Shelagh?

Is this name too old fashioned? I’ve been rewatching Call the Midwife and it caught my attention.

I quite like it, and can’t see how it’s too different sound wise from the Lila/Mila names that are so popular at the moment.

Willing to be told it’s awful though!

My NDN is called Sheila. She just turned 86 Grin. It’s not a good name imo.

Shadow1234 · 17/10/2018 17:39

No, dont like it im afraid

Spankyoumuchly · 17/10/2018 18:20

I like it. Why worry about other people's opinions? If you love it, why not?

SleepWarrior · 18/10/2018 17:30

The 3 older Sheilas that I know all have it as a shortening/nickname for Cecelia, which I think is a much more attractive name. Could you use that and call her Sheila as a nn if you wanted to? That way she wouldn't be stuck with it.

CharismamaMia · 18/10/2018 17:32

Not keen but feel bad as i know a lovely Sile

llangennith · 18/10/2018 17:35

All the Sheilas or Shelaghs I know don't like the name ☹️
Sybil? Celia?

Sessy19 · 18/10/2018 19:43

I was at school with a girl called Sheila and she was SO sweet. She’s be mid-30s now. It’s unusual. And I like it-very 50s.

But Sheila in CtM was suuuuuch a drip! 😂

DramaAlpaca · 18/10/2018 21:33

Spelled Sile (can't do fadas on phone) it's nice enough. Any other way, just no.

RedDwarves · 18/10/2018 21:52

It's awful.

ChiantiAndTruffles · 18/10/2018 21:55

Funnily enough know a baby Sheila born a few weeks ago. It suits her.

Korvalscat · 19/10/2018 01:10

Sheila is my 82 year old mother! She would tell you not to do that to a child.

TheMonkeyMummy · 19/10/2018 01:10

Not to my tastes at all

Kokeshi123 · 19/10/2018 04:11

Too soon for a revival, I think!

Aquamarine1029 · 19/10/2018 04:48

It is dreadful. I had a boss named Shelagh a million years ago when I was 19-21 and she was absolutely fucking awful. She forever poisoned the name for me.

ifeelsoextraordinary · 19/10/2018 19:03

My lovely mum was a Sheila...I toyed with it for DD2 and even posted on here for opinions. I bottled it in the end though Blush

MikeUniformMike · 19/10/2018 19:10

I think it's nice. She could have a brother called Bruce.

Phuquocdreams · 19/10/2018 19:15

I also like Sile, but not Shiela, which also shows it’s the connotations rather than the sound, as Sile and Shiela are the same sound! I’m not sure Sile would work if you’re not in ireland

Eeeeek2 · 19/10/2018 20:12

Shiela is going to be our dd middle name

llangennith · 20/10/2018 13:02

Eeeeek2 please spell it correctly! Sheila.**

HalfBloodPrincess · 20/10/2018 17:16

It fits the ‘old people’ trend but there are plenty of nicer names! I would put it in the same category as Eileen, Alma, Shirley or Phyllis.

What about Sheena? Has a similar sound but doesn’t seem as bad.

HalfBloodPrincess · 20/10/2018 17:19

Or even better, Sabrina.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 20/10/2018 17:19

My mum is called Sheila. I like it.

Knittedfairies · 20/10/2018 18:05

Eeeeek2 please spell it correctly! Sheila.**

Shiela isn’t incorrect, just a different spelling.

hoping2018 · 20/10/2018 22:28

I know someone with a baby slyvie - which I think is lovely and not too dissimilar? Not a fan of Sheila though

Eeeeek2 · 20/10/2018 22:32

Sorry typo yes I will be spelling it correctly
