Sigh....which are the best?

Title should probably be, which have aged the best.

DH and I have extremely different tastes in names, I don't want anything faddy / popular, he doesn't want anything 'out there' or anything that mildly seems old fashioned.

So this is the best we've got

  • Caitlyn
  • Megan
  • Hannah
  • Holly

I don't particularly love them (I do like them though), they seem a little bit dated (my sister is 20 and she knew lots of people in her age cohort with those names).

What would you choose? (also open to suggestions)

They're not my type of names, at a push I'd choose Megan.

Amy
Louise/Louisa
Jennifer
Katie
Gemma

Are of a similar vein

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/10/2018 21:11

I’d choose Megan but will ultimately grow in popularity after the princess. Caitlyn I just think Jenner.
In terms of real names that aren’t overly used I like Bethenny/ Melody / Daphne /

BikeRunSki · 10/10/2018 21:14

I’d say Hannah is the most ageless/least faddy.

piggie88 · 10/10/2018 21:17

I like Holly

Shazafied · 10/10/2018 21:26

Honestly no offence but they are all a bit ..... boring. It seems that you probably each have some better names on your own lists, but don't like each other's names, so have agreed on a few that you don't hate but don't love either. I'd keep looking!

MikeUniformMike · 10/10/2018 21:29

Of the 4, Hannah. Classic and won't date.
Meg is nice but I don't like Megan.
Kate is nice but I don't like Caitlin however you spell it.
Holly is ok but a bit Christmassy.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 10/10/2018 21:30

I really like Megan & Caitlin (spelt like that) - in fact both were on our shortlist.

We also had:
Chloe
Lauren
Sophie
Anna
Carla
Freya
Bethan
Leah

Shadow1234 · 10/10/2018 21:46

I really like Megan.

Hannah would be my second choice

Other suggestions:

Hailey
Lorna
Laura
Kayley
Carla
Jasmine
Leah
Imogen
Keeley
Amber
Eleanor
Eloise

ABCFamily · 10/10/2018 21:58

I really like Megan and Hannah (both on my shortlist)
Holly and Caitlyn are both ok, although I prefer the Caitlin spelling.

Some other suggestions:
Lucy
Grace
Erin
Abigail
Julia
Sophie
Rose
Rebecca
Naomi

AtticaRose · 10/10/2018 21:58

All are nice and very usable.

Weird side note - I was looking at the top names in different regions, and Hannah was the top name in some quite expensive areas, like central Cambridge. I was surprised, as I associate it with people in their 20s/30s. Suggests that it will have quite middle class connotations, perhaps? And won't be attached to any particular generation?

Surf4life · 10/10/2018 21:59

I like Kate, however two of my closest friends are called Kate & Katie.

Hmm, Holly might be out if I'm due in January...and your right Caitlin might be the better spelling.

Imogen is nice and so is Anna (I love Bethan, however my sister is a Bethany!)

Dont worry about it Shaza, I know they are bland Grin

But what names do you actually love, OP?

I gave XH a list of names when I was pg with ours which I loved more than anything. He chose the least bonkers of them all (as I knew he would - just happened to be my favourite name in all the DC's cases. I knew he would choose those names compared to the alternatives).

As a result, our DC have the names I love to bits. I would have been happy with the bonkers alternative suggestions if XH had had a sudden brainstorm and had agreed to call DC1 Gandalf, but as it is, they have the names I wanted them to have. Could you do similar?

Surf4life · 10/10/2018 22:10

I really like Abigail, however I loathe Abbey (bad associations). I quite like Lucy but it's quite popular?

Desperada, I like names that are 'known' but are not popular (Neve, Annabelle, Alexis, Tessa etc).

user90 · 10/10/2018 22:23

I agree that they're a bit bland too, sorry - Hannah is the best of the bunch.

What about -
Alexis
Allie
Annie
Bella
Cara
Ciara
Connie
Elise
Ella
Etta
Florence
Freya
Georgia
Hester
Harriet
Isla
Imogen
Juno
Jessie
Kora
Lola
Layla
Marnie
Marley
Quinn
Pippa
Raya
Scarlett
Summer
Tiegan
Victoria
Willow
Zara

ABCFamily · 10/10/2018 22:24

Some other suggestions:
Adeline
Lila
Ivy
Alana/Alanna/Alannah
Antonia
Hazel
Alexandra (Xan)
Adele
Pippa

bridgetreilly · 10/10/2018 22:32

I like Hannah, though also prefer Anna.

What about:
Lucy
Jemima
Ruth
Juliet
Claire
Annabel
Miriam

coffeekittens · 10/10/2018 22:32

They’re all fine except for Caitlyn, I just don’t like names like that though for no particular reason. I’d say my favourite is Holly followed by Megan.

How about:
Alexandrea
Annabelle
Cara
Felicity
Freya
Melissa
Natasha
Sophie

ReginaPhalange89 · 10/10/2018 22:36

Tessa is lovely!

mycatplotsdeath · 10/10/2018 23:21

Tessa
Faye
Georgia
Hazel
Millie
Anna
Heather
Catherine
Cecelia
Connie

Bouledeneige · 10/10/2018 23:28

I think they are a bit dull - sorry OP.

I like Tessa too. And
Lydia
Alice
Ciara
Marnie
Merisna
Rosa
Edie
Isadora
Bobby

Sophronia · 10/10/2018 23:32

Hannah is nice, but they’re all a bit 90s.

Wherearemycarkeys · 11/10/2018 03:02

I agree that they're a little dull. What names does you DH like that are a bit faddy? Maybe we could help think of a more classic alternative?

gimeallthecake · 11/10/2018 03:06

Hannah for sure!

Hannah Tessa is nice

JosellaPlayton · 11/10/2018 04:03

Honestly?! I don’t really like any of them. There’s nothing wrong with them per se but they’re quite dull and very dated. Hannah is definitely the best of the bunch.

Sungura · 11/10/2018 04:09

Hannah is quite pretty and a classic. I'd choose that of the names you've suggested.
