Sigh....which are the best?

Title should probably be, which have aged the best.

DH and I have extremely different tastes in names, I don't want anything faddy / popular, he doesn't want anything 'out there' or anything that mildly seems old fashioned.

So this is the best we've got

  • Caitlyn
  • Megan
  • Hannah
  • Holly

I don't particularly love them (I do like them though), they seem a little bit dated (my sister is 20 and she knew lots of people in her age cohort with those names).

What would you choose? (also open to suggestions)

Hannah is a lovely classic name.

The others are fine but a bit dated and /or linked with particular celebrities.

Greyhound22 · 11/10/2018 06:23

I'm a Hannah (late 30's)

I disagree that it's dull and outdated. I've always liked it and was grateful that I wasn't given any of the 'faddy' names of the 80's.

I like the names on your list. I'm not a fan of the current trend for 'cutesy' names that suit a baby or someone of 90 but nowhere in between.

MaverickSnoopy · 11/10/2018 06:39

I like similar sorts of names. Classic that don't really date although in our case preferably on the verge of a "bit" different.

I like Megan the most and if we didn't have a family member called Megan, the name would have been on our list.

I was also going to suggest Anna, as well as Chloe and Lucy. The latter of which is on our shortlist, but I don't think we're going to use it (only because I "think" we've now decided on our favourite).

SelinaMyers · 11/10/2018 06:46

I feel Anna is a less bland version of Hannah. What about Anna Neve?

goldentrianglex · 11/10/2018 08:46

I love Tessa from your other suggestions .

auntyflonono · 11/10/2018 08:50

I also would go for Anna rather than Hannah, possibly as a short form of something. Antonia or Juliana appeal to me.

I wouldn't chose Holly as there seem to be a lot.

ladybirdsaredotty · 11/10/2018 08:50

I really like Megan and Holly! I think these names all work really well separately, it's only together they seem a bit dated. My DD2 has a little friend called Holly and they're only in Reception!

auntyflonono · 11/10/2018 08:53

I also like Alix as a stand alone name, one of Queen Victoria's granddaughters.

HJL2506 · 11/10/2018 09:05

I'm a Hannah and I'm 31. I do like my name but people will call her Han. My mum hates Han but I guess she couldnt have stopped what others have called me since school etc. 🙂

greendale17 · 11/10/2018 09:11

Holly

Caitlin is dated

Surf4life · 11/10/2018 10:19

Some of you have persuaded me that Hannah is pretty cool (and not that dated), it has grown on me much more and I love Hannah Tessa.

Another vote for Hannah. It's timeless and elegant, and can be used all over the world. The others do all sound a bit early-90s bland.

Flamingosnbears · 11/10/2018 13:08

Megan has aged the best in my opinion but all names come around again...

EthelHallowsBroomstick · 11/10/2018 18:29

I don't think Hannah is a classic, to me a classic has people of all generations with it as a name and I've never met one born before the 80s (or maybe the late 70s at a push). It does seem to have been consistently fairly popular since then though.

That said, I'd pick Holly from this list, though it's not a classic either!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/10/2018 18:33

Definitely Hannah.

It’s not a name pinpointed to any particular age group.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 11/10/2018 18:36

Holly 💕

daisypond · 11/10/2018 18:52

Hannah is best out of your options.

daisypond · 11/10/2018 18:56

What about other classic names that aren't so popular now, but may be coming back slowly?
Mary
Jane
Sarah/Sara
Margaret/Maggie/Meg
Catherine
Tessa is nice

TheLovelyOtherDinosaur · 11/10/2018 19:02

No don’t choose Hannah- it’s old fashioned and dull! I know so many Hannah’s in their 20’s and early 30’s.
Anna is much nicer. Lucy is lovely and classic too (along the same lines as Kate but noted you can’t have that). Imogen is nice too.
Why can’t you go for Tessa? It’s much more unusual but classic at the same time. I would work on your husband.

Kraggle · 11/10/2018 19:03

I love Hannah (and Anna!)
Dd2 was very nearly Tessa so that’s a yes as well.

Other names on our list were:

Tessa
Georgia
Elizabeth
Bethan
Juliet
Florence
Anna
Alice
Martha
Sylvie
Katherine
Josephine
Juno
Veda

Notso · 11/10/2018 19:32

Hannah or Megan

Thetimehascometo · 12/10/2018 00:23

Hannah or Lucy (Lucy is no more popular than Hannah I would suggest)

As for ‘Neve’ if you use it please spell it Niamh 😊 ☘️

Oysterbabe · 12/10/2018 16:03

They're very 80s. So in that vein, how about Emma?

3in4years · 13/10/2018 00:27

I really love Hannah.

Polkasq · 13/10/2018 08:36

I like Holly best.
