Do you know any children called...

David
It was so popular in the 80s there was one in most classes. I think it is a lovely name with a great meaning but is it too dated or are people still naming their baby boys David? And would he inevitably end up being Dave?

I don't but it's a lovely name. I've know some adults and only one was a Dave.

Aozora13 · 10/10/2018 12:14

My friends’ 8yo is David, and one of our NCT couples has a baby David who’s 2. Both are Davids not Daves. It’s a family name for me - lots of positive associations!

Hanky 😁😁😁😁

Rebecca36 · 10/10/2018 12:21

Still a popular name, what's more it's a classic name, nobody called David would feel embarrassed by it when grown up. Dave for short is nice too, it's friendly.

susurration · 10/10/2018 12:28

I used to know one. He's probably 12 ish now.

HollowTalk · 10/10/2018 12:33

The dog on Gogglebox is called Dave.

foxtiger · 10/10/2018 14:00

I know of one who's about 5. In my experience Davids don't tend to get called Dave until they're in their teens at least, by which time it would be his choice whether he wanted to shorten, not yours.

margaritasbythesea · 10/10/2018 14:01

I know two under 10.

Desperada1234 · 10/10/2018 14:02

I know one (Year 7). I remember thinking it was unusual when he was in Nursery! (and I don't mean that in a bad way - just that there aren't many Davids around nowadays, and it's a nice name).

ReginaPhalange89 · 10/10/2018 20:50

I have actually met several baby David's in the last year or so ! I have an 18 month old and since going to baby groups/ classes I've actually met about 5 . The first time I heard it I thought wow I've not heard that for years.... I assume it's become popular again in my area ! West of Scotland

RiverTam · 10/10/2018 20:52

Only adults, no children. 2 Daves, 2 Davids. MN would have you belief a short is inevitable but I know plenty of people who’ve gone through life without having their name shortened, including David.

NoSleepTil2030 · 10/10/2018 20:59

I'm in my 30s and know a lot. My brother, my BIL (who works in a team of 3, all called Dave), and my mum, sister and I have all dated (separate!) ones. All born in the 80s or before.

MikeUniformMike · 10/10/2018 21:01

Davey is super cute as a nn. David is a classic.

Lynne1Cat · 10/10/2018 21:05

My brother is a David, and he's 71.....

Mummamia14 · 10/10/2018 22:40

Thanks everyone, sounds like it depends a lot on where you live. Glad to know it isn't too dated though and I hadn't thought about the fact that it travels well!

I know a pony called Dave.

LongDiscoClara · 10/10/2018 23:20

Husband is called David and is never called Dave. There is also a boy called David in my daughters class ( aged 6).

Rebecca36 · 11/10/2018 04:27

I have a David whose friends call him Dave but no-one who isn't a friend. He absolutely loves his name, his best friend is also David/Dave.

There's something inherently blokeish and friendly about the name.
It is No 31 in the top baby names for this year so far so still quite popular.

Far better to have a classic name than one that is ultra trendy, surely?

Bloomburger · 11/10/2018 04:55

Just makes me think of Baby David from the Royale Family.

cece · 11/10/2018 04:59

I know one but he's year 11 at school now. He's always david. It doesn't get shortened.

Aquamarine1029 · 11/10/2018 06:24

I know several David's, all over 30 and all twats. I hate that name.

PrincessTwilightStoleMyToddler · 11/10/2018 06:27

I know a two year old David but was quite surprised when his name was announced tbh.

DinnaeKnowShitFromClay · 11/10/2018 06:29

"Why do they call you Rodney, Dave?"

"Cos it's my name."

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 11/10/2018 06:30

I know of three - ages 4, 5 & 7

PenguinSaidEverything · 11/10/2018 06:31

I know a lovely five year old David.
