Our shortlist is below, and I think Mabel is edging out in front (for me at least!) Would appreciate your thoughts...

Mabel
Martha
Ivy
Ada
Olive

I like Martha, Ada and Mabel.

finallychangedmyusername · 06/10/2018 20:50

I agree, Mabel is my favourite from your list. Olive just makes me think of the murky colour, Ivy and Ada are too popular for my liking and Martha just makes me think of the word "homely". Mabel feels quite quirky yet combines two currently popular names, May and Belle.

DramaAlpaca · 06/10/2018 20:55

I like Olive & Ada & don't mind Mabel & Ivy.

I dislike Martha, I agree with the PP who said it's 'homely'.

DollyDayScream · 06/10/2018 21:24

Martha is lovely

RedDwarves · 06/10/2018 21:38

Martha is the best.

Sungura · 06/10/2018 22:37

Mabel gets my vote.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 06/10/2018 22:48

Martha's lovely, but doesn't travel - she'll be 'Marta' almost everywhere outside English-speaking countries, and it's not nearly as nice. Olive, Ivy and Mabel will scream 'mid-2010s - back when old lady chic was a thing' in a couple of decades' time. Go with Ada. I'm not a huge fan, but it's pretty and simple and Ada Lovelace is an interesting namesake.

Bunnybigears · 06/10/2018 22:50

Not my style of name at all but Mabel will always be a dogs name in my mind. I think the best of the lost is Ada.

birthdayparty · 06/10/2018 22:56

Martha and Mabel are equally lovely in my opinion. Ivy is nice but becoming a bit overused. Ada and Olive just don't sound very nice to me, sorry.

Shadow1234 · 07/10/2018 03:10

Only like Martha on your list, but prefer Matilda as an alternative.

scrivette · 07/10/2018 05:03

I kind Mabel

ThursdaysChildHasFarToGo · 07/10/2018 05:52

My order, Mabel is my favourite by far. I do like them all though.

  1. Mabel

  2. Ada

  3. Olive

  4. Martha

  5. Ivy

Jenniferlyndley · 07/10/2018 07:34

Thank you everyone!

Yes the fear of it being a trend name does bother me a bit - will keep thinking, but think Mabel and Martha are the top 2.

I love Matilda but now I'm on DC3 I'm cursed with knowing lots of children - and 4 under 5s are called Matilda, with a couple being the DDs of really close friends we see all the time.

I like Martha and Mabel

lifechangesforever · 07/10/2018 07:40

Ada was my favourite name.. DH vetoed though Envy I love Martha too.

LusaCole · 07/10/2018 07:42

I like Olive, Ivy, Martha and Ada (in that order).

Not keen on Mabel.

BabarKingoftheElephants · 07/10/2018 07:52

I love Mabel and Martha

NorthernRunner · 07/10/2018 07:58

I love Mabel my dd has a friend at nursery with this name and I think it’s great 😊 I don’t care for Matilda, Ivy or Ada...they are ten a penny near me. I quite like Olive though.
Can I suggest Pearl and Nancy?

qumquat · 07/10/2018 08:56

Martha is beautiful. The rest are very 2018 and will date very quickly if that kind of thing bothers you

Jenniferlyndley · 07/10/2018 09:02

I'm trying to decide whether that bothers me or not! DH doesn't care at all about that - he is of the view that if we love a name it doesn't matter if it's in the top 5.

Like Pearl too. Really like Nancy but know quite a few of them.

Martha for sure. Mabel is ok. The others are awful.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/10/2018 10:02

From your list, I like Olive.
Nancy is lovely !
How about Ida, as you like Ivy and Ada.

Polkasq · 07/10/2018 10:08

I like Ivy best.

Icklepup · 07/10/2018 14:20

Mabel or Pearl

TatianaLarina · 07/10/2018 14:30

Martha is the only one I like.

Mabel is dowdy and unsophisticated. As an adult it would be very difficult to make it chic.
