Expecting a baby girl due early November. I'm a writer so unfortunately picking baby names isn't as wonderful as it used to be. I've gone through almost every name in my years of writing so they've all become bland and I've taken an interest to unusual and sort of "fantasy" names. Older siblings are called:

DD, aged 9: Callisto - no teasing has happened yet and while I've received raised eyebrows from other parents, I've also received compliments. Sometimes goes by Callie, though and she has a lovely modern middle name if she wishes to go by that in the future.

DD, aged 6: Posy - no teasing happened, mostly goes by Po at home and by family members. Also has a modern middle name if she wishes to choose a more "mature" route.

DS, aged 2: Benaiah - more "normal" than his sister's names but he mostly goes by his full name rather than Ben or Benny. Has a classic middle name from a family member but also Ben is suitable if he dislikes his full name in the future.

All names were made up once - Wendy was made up by J.M. Barrie! I'm sure Olivia was also created by Shakespeare. I'm not asking for made up names but all names were made up at some point and they've gradually become accepted so I'm not looking for any backlash.

I went to school with a Jack, Eve, Peter and Ellie. They all got teased relentlessly.

The names I've taken a like to are:

Emerald - not too unusual and I love it. Could definitely go by Em or even Emma by friends (I'll stick to the full name Smile )

Canary - believe it or not my great aunt's name was Canary. I'm sure I'll definitely receive quite some hate for this but I realise I am naming an adult so it'll either be middle name or a name for a story character.

Arrietta - just love it. I love the nn Etta too but Ari is also a popular option.

Mary - surprisingly in the midst of those unusual names I like Mary. Inspired by The Secret Garden. When I hear it it doesn't sound dated to me but I realise it may to you all. Love it nonetheless.

Which ones do you like best and why? Also open to suggestions for similar names.

No outright rudeness, please!

Arietta is lovely.

skunkatanka · 30/09/2018 12:45

Mary and Arrietta. I know you said don't be nasty but honestly, OP, these are names for actual humans!!

FaithInfinity · 30/09/2018 12:45

I really don’t think it’s wise to call a child Canary. I really, really don’t.

I think Arietta is lovely, very pretty. Mary is nice enough, fairly timeless.

Woollymammothz · 30/09/2018 12:48

skunk

I know. Canary is on the bottom of the list, really. Truthfully I don't see myself using it. Heavily pregnant and been writing fantasy with characters with strange names for years has probably taken its toll on me.

mary

lovely, classic timeless name
sounds soft and pretty

emerald-no

arrietta...sounds like an aitch is being dropped

canary..just no, absolutely not, under no circumstances

IggyAce · 30/09/2018 12:53

Arietta is beautiful and goes lovely with your other DCs names. Mary is nice too but a bit plain in comparison to her siblings, perhaps use it as the middle name.

tatim · 30/09/2018 12:53

I honestly think Mary is my least favourite off this list - it's so dull.

Not keen on Canary.

Arietta is okay - I like the nicknames either Ari or Etta.

Emerald is probably my favourite although I'm not overly keen - I prefer Emrys.

Cookit · 30/09/2018 12:56

Arietta, although I’d probably go for Arietty like in the Borrowers! I adored that book and TV series in the 90s.

Canary and Emerald I find very harsh sounding and thus not really suitable as names. Canary in particular. It just makes me think of Canary Wharf and canaries in the mines.

AuntieStella · 30/09/2018 12:58

I like Mary, and that would be your 'safe'choice.

I also like Arrietta (a bit Borrowers, but that wouldn't put me off, though a life time of saying 'not not Harriet, and no 'h'' might)

Emerald, probably not as it just sounds rather hard somehow.

Canary, definitely not (especially if you are, or are ever likely to be, in East Anglia. But it wouid be fine as a middle name.

t00dle00 · 30/09/2018 12:59

My aunt is Arrietta, she's in her 50s now. I always loved her name.

MrsAlanPartridge · 30/09/2018 13:00

I have an Arietty. Hasn't raised any eyebrows at all.. all my other children have relatively unusual names I suppose.
Good luck with your choice Smile

userabcname · 30/09/2018 13:01

Arrietta! Love it!

cholka · 30/09/2018 13:03

Canary no. Sounds too trivial.

Emerald is good. Mary is good but people might wonder why you've gone plain after the other three.

Arrietta is ok, but why not just Etta? Or Alouette (little lark, it's a song)

DramaAlpaca · 30/09/2018 13:06

I like Emerald & it fits with your other names beautifully.

Arrietta is OK too, though my immediate thought is the Borrowers, but that's not a bad thing.

Mary, while a lovely classic name, is very plain in comparison to the others' unusual names. She might feel a bit undersold in the future.

Canary? Just no. Please don't inflict that on a child.

BakedBeans47 · 30/09/2018 13:06

Canary is horrendous but the others are ok.

Boglin · 30/09/2018 13:08

I like Emerald.

How about combining Mary and Arrietta to make Marietta?

bridgetreilly · 30/09/2018 13:10

I really don't like Canary at all. Emerald is fine and seems to me the same sort of name as your others. I do love Mary but it would feel a bit odd one out in your family, I think. I would call her Arrietty.

KarlDilkington · 30/09/2018 13:13

Canary 😂

joystir59 · 30/09/2018 13:16

I like them all but would only call a child Canary if I moved in circles where children have really strange names, like celebrity children do.

Reaa · 30/09/2018 13:21

Arrietta is nice

Couple of suggestions Alyssa & Ameria

NotANotMan · 30/09/2018 13:24

How about Mariette (darling buds of May) or Esmeralda?

I do like Arietta but prefer mariette or Marietta. Emerald isn't great. Mary is sweet. Canary - just no.

newhousenewstart · 30/09/2018 13:24

Mary is such a beautiful name. It’s just so understated

Laac · 30/09/2018 13:25

I like Emerald and Canary. They're unusual but still traditional.

Peachbubble · 30/09/2018 13:26

Love Callisto and Posy, not heard of Benaiah before. I think Emerald is a good 'fit' with these. Not keen on Canary, sorry.

How about: Evangeline, Aurora, Amaryllis, Cordelia, Romilly, Marigold?

skunkatanka · 30/09/2018 13:27

How is Canary a traditional name?
