Expecting a baby girl due early November. I'm a writer so unfortunately picking baby names isn't as wonderful as it used to be. I've gone through almost every name in my years of writing so they've all become bland and I've taken an interest to unusual and sort of "fantasy" names. Older siblings are called:

DD, aged 9: Callisto - no teasing has happened yet and while I've received raised eyebrows from other parents, I've also received compliments. Sometimes goes by Callie, though and she has a lovely modern middle name if she wishes to go by that in the future.

DD, aged 6: Posy - no teasing happened, mostly goes by Po at home and by family members. Also has a modern middle name if she wishes to choose a more "mature" route.

DS, aged 2: Benaiah - more "normal" than his sister's names but he mostly goes by his full name rather than Ben or Benny. Has a classic middle name from a family member but also Ben is suitable if he dislikes his full name in the future.

All names were made up once - Wendy was made up by J.M. Barrie! I'm sure Olivia was also created by Shakespeare. I'm not asking for made up names but all names were made up at some point and they've gradually become accepted so I'm not looking for any backlash.

I went to school with a Jack, Eve, Peter and Ellie. They all got teased relentlessly.

The names I've taken a like to are:

Emerald - not too unusual and I love it. Could definitely go by Em or even Emma by friends (I'll stick to the full name Smile )

Canary - believe it or not my great aunt's name was Canary. I'm sure I'll definitely receive quite some hate for this but I realise I am naming an adult so it'll either be middle name or a name for a story character.

Arrietta - just love it. I love the nn Etta too but Ari is also a popular option.

Mary - surprisingly in the midst of those unusual names I like Mary. Inspired by The Secret Garden. When I hear it it doesn't sound dated to me but I realise it may to you all. Love it nonetheless.

Which ones do you like best and why? Also open to suggestions for similar names.

No outright rudeness, please!

Love Arietta Mary - great name.

Talith · 01/10/2018 19:47

Arietta oddly reminds me of the word for the area around a nipple so that would rule it out for me. Emerald is beautiful.

Canary isn't so bad but it's a somewhat diminutive small cutesy bird so I'd choose something with stronger imagery.

Emerald Mary would be beautifully strong and unusual.

Talith · 01/10/2018 19:51

We have Posys and Posies, also Arielle here in the Midlands, if you want to buck trends.

Talith · 01/10/2018 19:53

We can expect a lot of Arianas in the next few years, not that Arietta/y is the same, but it is similar.

Waterlemon · 01/10/2018 21:03

I like all of them but agree with the others that have said Mary is a bit plain in comparison to siblings names and Canary a bit too “out there’

Amethyst- Nn Amelia, Amy
Orlena/ Orlana
Angharad

Love Arietta.

What about Minty, Valentina, Arrianna, Veronique, Castillo, Celina, Selicia, Mimi

susurration · 01/10/2018 21:08

Emerald and Arrietta/ Arriety are lovely.

How about Purdie as an alternative to Posy?

SemperIdem · 01/10/2018 21:12

J.M Barrie did not make up the name Wendy. It existed as a surname for hundreds of years before Peter Pan was written.

Henry VII’s (or maybe Henry VIII) personal doctor was a Dr Wendy.

I quite like Emerald.

Canary is a strong no.

PunkrockerGirl59 · 01/10/2018 21:28

How about Purdie as an alternative to Posy

I have no words Confused

SumAndSubstance · 01/10/2018 21:34

How about Purdie as an alternative to Posy?

You know Posy already exists, right? Grin

TatianaLarina · 01/10/2018 22:05

For my money the family names are a bit random.

I’d go back to Callisto, which is inspired, and follow with something like Phoebe, Leto, Dido, Demeter, Artemis.

BasiliskStare · 01/10/2018 22:23

I think Mary is not common nowadays but very classic and sounds lovely.

Urubamba · 01/10/2018 23:00

I know some writers. They like to let us all know they are writers, too.

Anyhow sento un po' di arietta tra le chiappe.

But seriously, Emerald is a fantastic name.

IdaBWells · 01/10/2018 23:05

I also actually like Emerald and I was surprised to find my 15 yr old DD likes Sapphire as that was a name I considered for my two girls.

They both can be easily shortened.

SneakySneaky · 02/10/2018 01:52

I like Emerald. I prefer Esmeralda- my favourite ever girls name not sure I’d ever be brave enough to use it

Arietta is lovely!

I agree that Mary, while a perfectly nice name, is possibly a bit plain after your previous three.

Not sure what to say about Canary!

moredoll · 02/10/2018 02:13

Arietta is nice and goes well with the others.
Emerald is lovely.
Mary is nice, nothing more. Maybe a middle name?
Canary is cruel imo.

Momma22 · 02/10/2018 02:32

I love Emerald! I'd go with the nickname Em or Emmie, wish I was brave enough to use this name myself

QuaterMiss · 02/10/2018 04:01

justilou1 · 02/10/2018 04:24

I love Arietta (Musically, it means a small aria or song. Never a bad thing!) Emeralds are divine. Can be shortened to Emmie. Mary is okay for a middle name, but I was scarred for life by wizened-up, cat-arsed nuns by that name. I can’t quite relax around Marys. (Also see it as being a bit beige.) I know you already have a Posy which I adore, if you had chosen the French spelling “Poésie” it would have sat delightfully well with Arietta. (Not that it doesn’t, btw!) I also love all the flower names, bar Hyacinth and Gladiolus. Iris, Rosie, Daisy, Blossom, etc.... I love them. They’re feminine and romantic.

justilou1 · 02/10/2018 04:25

Also love Marina, Amarina and Mimi (but I’m biased - that’s my eldest DD)

TatianaLarina · 02/10/2018 10:46

Poésie is not the French spelling of Posy - they mean completely different things (poetry/nosegay).

justilou1 · 02/10/2018 11:01

I know... which is why I thought it would go nicely with Arietta - small aria.

17caterpillars1mouse · 02/10/2018 11:27

Any apart from Canary which is ridiculous. I quite like Emerald nn Em

BertrandRussell · 02/10/2018 12:15

My brother has a theory that women should not be allowed to name children. He reckons that there is nothing else that they can't do-just the naming of children. This thread seems to prove his point!

adviceonthepox · 02/10/2018 12:17

Arrietta is beautiful I would use it :)
