We have a little shortlist, and i know it really shouldn't matter, but peoples opinions really do help my decision making. Especilly my parents - who as usual don't like alot of the names we've picked out. So i've turned to the wonderful world of MN. Honest opinions please. Smile

Boys

Lucas, Owen, Jude, Leo ( i like this but DH said its ok for a boy but not a grown man Confused

girls

Poppy, Mila, Lydia, Eva

Lucas is far too overused IMO.
Owen is okay - I think it'd grow on me.
Jude - love this one.
I think the name Leo is cute and see no reason why it would need a longer version!

Poppy, Eva and Mila are all overused in my opinion. I know a few of each born in the last couple of years. I think there's a bit of a pronunciation issue with Mila too!
Lydia is probably the nicest out of the girls as it's not overused. It's not my taste but I think it would suit the right little girl Smile

JassyRadlett · 27/09/2018 13:34

I’m so surprised by thinking that Leo is a small child’s name! I always think of it as quite heavyweight/adult - 13 popes, some kings and emperors, Tolstoy, Varadkar, McKern, and the fictional Bloom and McGarry.

But then I do tend to think of ‘Jude’ as not working on an adult so we all have our quirks. Smile

Crunchie14 · 27/09/2018 14:57

I agree about Mila, i do think it's pretty but don't want to set her up for a lifetime of mis pronounciations and having to spell it out etc.

And i over think Owen as being the opposite to Leo, as in okay for a man but doesnt suit a little boy.
I don't know if pregnancy is causing me to overthink everything but this isn't normal haha. I think I'm struggling because nothing has made me go 'wow I love that'.
2 baby name books and 3 apps later!!

But any Owens will only be a little boy for about 8 or 9 years- he’ll be a man for much much longer than that.

Also the lead character in the Jurassic World films is called Owen, which is pretty cool for most little boys.

I’m going to speak to DH tonight about considering Owen for dc2- I forgot how much I love it.

PixelAteMe · 27/09/2018 15:16

I love Leo, Lucas and Lydia. Not keen at all on the other names, particularly Jude because of the yellow star association.

Leo is a very strong name, I really don’t understand why pps are saying it’s not suitable for a grown man? To me it sounds like an archetypal alpha-male kind of name, leader of the pack (or should that be pride?). One I would definitely put on my list if I were to have a boy.

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 27/09/2018 15:27

Love Lydia for a girl. Eva is so ubiquitous and Mila seems to be going that way too. I also know tons of dogs called Poppy.

I really like Jude or Owen for a boy. Leo isn’t my thing and I don’t know why but I irrationally can’t stand Lucas.

Shadow1234 · 27/09/2018 15:50

Prefer Owen from your boys list, and Lydia from your girls

MollyHuaCha · 27/09/2018 16:01

Lucas - nice
Owen - no
Jude - nice
Leo - nice

DH said its ok for a boy but not a grown man - rubbish!

Poppy - now this cutesy name actually isn't for a grown woman
Mila - it's too milkshakey for me

Lydia - love it
Eva - love it (which pronunciation are you thinking of? Eee-va or Ay-va)

BewareOfDragons · 27/09/2018 16:09

None are really to my taste; I can't even pick a 'favourite' tbh. Girls names are all meh and everywhere you look, and the boys names aren't that great.

gilmoregal · 27/09/2018 16:38

Jude is becoming quite popular I know of three born so far this year,

Lucas is really nice, this was a name on my short list. My association is One Tree Hill, I've always liked it since then. Also it means bright/shining which is lovely. Also like Luca which means light.

not a fan of Leo, no strong feelings on Owen.

Poppy is a lovely name but for a dog/cat in my opinion

Eva, I prefer Evie although very popular.

Lydia, I think it's a really harsh name however that's probably Aunt Lydia's fault and I knew one at school who was vile also.

Mila- I pronounce My-la like Mila Kunis. Think it's a very pretty name, and is a lovely name for a child and for an adult.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/09/2018 18:52

From your list, I like Leo and Poppy.

PawneeParksDept · 27/09/2018 18:54

From your list my favourites are Lydia and Jude

Ilikecakes · 27/09/2018 18:57

Erm Leo is the name of the current Irish Taoiseach (PM), so definitely passes that test 😀

DrinkCoffeeASAP · 27/09/2018 18:59

Like Jude and Lydia not the rest

cptartapp · 27/09/2018 20:08

Lucas- much prefer Luke. Classier.
Owen- wet. Rather effeminate.
Jude- try too hard and sounds like rude, ugly name.
Leo- best of a bad bunch!

Poppy- detest this, infantile.
Mila- sounds made up
Lydia- nice but very popular
Eva-not another. Massively overused.

Leo and Lydia at a push.

MikeUniformMike · 27/09/2018 20:18

Lucas - very popular,
Owen - ok but just ok,
Jude - horrible,
Leo - very popular

Poppy - like it but many don't,
Mila - is it Meela or Miler,
Lydia - Lyds, Chlamydia
Eva - Braun

Anoisagusaris · 28/09/2018 00:13

How has no one commented that the Taoiseach (PM) of Ireland is called Leo??!!

I know several and none are children nor young adults. I’ve never heard of it as a shortened version of Leonard either.

scottishma · 28/09/2018 00:19

@Anoisagusaris

I was about to post the exact same thing!!

:)

Agustarella · 28/09/2018 00:19

^ This. I really like Leo, Lydia and Eva.

LightDrizzle · 28/09/2018 00:21

I’ve always liked Lydia since reading “Love for Lydia” as a young teen. The Lydia- Chlamydia thing wouldn’t put me off at all. I like Jude too. Not keen on the rest but none are awful.
I find Poppy a bit twee and not great for a mature woman.

Agustarella · 28/09/2018 00:41

Lydia reminds me of the lovely song. (Gabriel Fauré not Groucho Marx!)

They have, just 4 posts above yours, Anoisagusaris

I think of a man when I hear the name Leo:- Leo Dalton in Silent Witness for example (& Leo McKern who played Mr Rumpole). I like it very much.

Jude and Lucas I do not like. Luke is nice, timeless.

Out of your girls' names list, I prefer Lydia.
