We have a little shortlist, and i know it really shouldn't matter, but peoples opinions really do help my decision making. Especilly my parents - who as usual don't like alot of the names we've picked out. So i've turned to the wonderful world of MN. Honest opinions please. Smile

Boys

Lucas, Owen, Jude, Leo ( i like this but DH said its ok for a boy but not a grown man Confused

girls

Poppy, Mila, Lydia, Eva

Oh just to add Tony Blair's father was called Leo and Blair named his youngest after him. So Leo is not a little boy's name, it's fine for a man. A manly name too.

Indeed. Check out Leo Slezak as Otello:

I like Jude.
Leo

Eva, maybe Ava?

Narya · 28/09/2018 04:46

Like Owen and Leo, they are great. Jude and Lucas aren't really my taste.

What about Ethan?

Mila is nice but has more than one pronunciation so will inevitably be said wrong some of the time.

Poppy is a bit cutesy

Eva is nice but way overused, like Evie, Ava etc. Eve is nice though.

Lydia is a bit stuffy and not my taste

FixItUpChappie · 28/09/2018 04:57

Well, I have a Leo and while I love the very bones of him, his name is SO popular....there are 3 in his daycare room. 3. Every book and show these days seems to feature a Leo character. I want to not hate that but I do.

SaturdaySauv · 28/09/2018 05:22

Eva hasn’t been higher than top 60-80 in past several years so it’s actually not as popular as people on here say.

Hushabyelullaby · 28/09/2018 05:40

Just to give some alternatives.

Poppy is very cutesy and also there are loads of them about, what about Pippa (nn for Phillipa/Philippa)?I'm aware that on the continent Pippa means 'blowjob', so having the full version to fall back on is essential, it also gives her a choice if she wants to use it when she's older.

Instead of Ethan maybe Evan?

If you are pronouncing Milla as Mile-a, would the spelling Myla help? If it's said Meel-a then Mila seems to be how it's mostly spelled (I.e. Mila Kunis)

Eve/Eva/Ava is so popular at the moment, I know loads of girls named this. Do you like what are classed as 'older' peoples names? Ada?

I like Jude but wasn't aware of the yellow star thing, which would frankly put me off. Do you like Job (pronounced Jobe)?

Luca as an alternative to Lucas?

Instead of Owen maybe Owain (pronounced Oh-wine)

I like Lydia (nn could be Lydie).

Buxbaum · 28/09/2018 07:13

Eva hasn’t been higher than top 60-80 in past several years so it’s actually not as popular as people on here say.

What statistics are you looking at? Eva has been in the top fifty since 2008 and is currently #33. Not ludicrously popular, then, but when combined with all of the Avas (#4), Evelyns (#22) and Evies (#14) you have a large number of very similar sounding names which makes each one seem more popular than the statistics would suggest.

innabler · 28/09/2018 07:32

Leo is nice name wanted to name my son but couldn't as a closed relative named theirs .named mine leandro close enough to call him leo 😍

HeronLanyon · 28/09/2018 08:25

Love Lydia. Strong and pretty and not overused. Mila - lovely name. I know a young mila (Child of someone I see infrequently so not frequently using the name). I always forget how to pronounce it. It’s beyond the stage where it’s approproiate just to say that or ask how to pronounce it or eg “I’m really bad with names”. It means I don’t use her name when I can avoid it and sometimes that means I don’t communicate about her with her dps in what would be a normal open way. Difficult name for me for some reason. Too many pronunciations. The right one never seems to stick.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 28/09/2018 08:30

Owen & Lydia are a cut above the others

starkid · 28/09/2018 14:27

I like Lucas and Lydia from your lists :) Owen is ok too.

Luca is an alternative to avoid it rhyming with mucus.

Crunchie14 · 01/10/2018 10:21

Thank you so much for your replies! Sorry for the late response we were away this weekend. And thank you for the extra suggestions to, it does help!
As i say I don't really love anything with a passion so could end up with something completely different, just struggling to find anything that makes me go 'oohhh I love that!' Is that the feeling you get when you find THE ONE??? Confused

The Irish PM is Leo Varadkar!

mikado1 · 01/10/2018 10:29

Sorry X post!!

Flexoset · 01/10/2018 10:34

I like all of them.

Owen and Lydia both sound a bit more 'dated' than the others, but that might just be me. Still great names, though.

You might like Rex or Lara (or you might not!).

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 01/10/2018 10:36

If it helps, my great grandmother always said that if it didn't work with a royal title attached to it, then it isn't good enough!

E.g Prince Wayne wouldn't work, it's awful whereas Prince James is wonderful.

It's something that has always stuck in my head when naming DD and our next DC.

Buscake · 01/10/2018 10:40

I have a Jude and also speak German so knew about the name being the same as jew in that language. Why is this a bad thing?? The Jews didn’t do anything wrong in the holocaust! It’s not like Adolf is one of the suggestions. Completely bizarre reason to rule out a name

NCPuffin · 01/10/2018 10:47

Our Lucas is 13 days old today! It is a popular name, but not top 10. I have a popular name too, which has never bothered me (although I did do DS the pleasure of going with the more conventional spelling looking at you, mum and dad). You might also like Alex. I don't like your other boys' names. Not too keen on your girls' names either. Have you considered Rosa?

NCPuffin · 01/10/2018 10:49

As for not having a wow feeling: I know what you mean, but the name needs to be suitable and nice, that's good enough. If you haven't felt the wow factor yet, you're unlikely to come across it if you keep looking.

user14869556378 · 01/10/2018 12:34

Owen & Lydia !

Stuckforthefourthtime · 01/10/2018 12:40

I like them all! (Less so Mila, but I'm just biased because she's a bully in the class of one of my DSs). Especially Lydia, it was on my shortlist for if we had a girl.
Could your Leo be Leon? I think it's a great name and maybe DH would see it as more grown up.

Where we live, Lucas and Eva are very popular and Leo quite popular - would that be an issue for you? Check our darkgreener.org to see popularity.

Crunchie14 · 16/10/2018 12:00

We've decided on a girls name....... now just boys. If anyone ever looks at this again Grin
Dh has thrown in Harrison - I don't know any surprisingly as I've heard how popular the name is! Also still loving Leo and Owen.
Opinions on Harrison?? - a few people have said it's a naughty boys name!

Thank you! x
