Do I go with the safe or contentious name?

A few weeks ago I posted about the name Tabitha. It’s my favourite but the response on MN was mixed and the reaction from my nearest and dearest even worse.

My OH and I had originally picked the name Ivy before we thought of Tabitha, but we’re worried that it’s too common and similar to your Ava’s and Evie’s etc

So my question is do I go with the name that is a bit more unusual but often disliked, or the one that is more liked but also more used? We love both but we are struggling to settle!

Tabitha Jane/Tabitha Rose

Or

Ivy Elizabeth?

I like them equally, go with Tabitha if you like that one best.

Go with the name YOU like Smile

You know in your gut which one that is- stick to it! Personally why let anonymous people determine your daughters name Wine

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/09/2018 20:26

I much prefer Tabitha.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 07/09/2018 20:32

Don't like Tabitha, sounds like a simpering spoilt posh girl although I may be influenced by the ghastly TCB in Jilly Cooper.

Ohyesiam · 07/09/2018 20:35

Tabitha, it’s GORGEOUS. I wish I’d called my daughter that.
She has a friend who is Tabitha, Tabby for short, she’s a glamorous sporty 14 year old and it really really suits her.

Bamaluz · 07/09/2018 20:39

I love Tabitha.

AuntGertrude · 07/09/2018 20:52

Tabitha Jane.
but definitely Tabitha

Love Tabitha. It sounds such a gentle sweet name. Ivy is a hard sounding name x

First rule of naming a child is not to tell anyone or ask family opinions before you've 100% decided.

Second rule is to ignore everyone else's opinions and just choose the name you love the most.

villainousbroodmare · 07/09/2018 21:07

I much prefer Tabitha.

Justkeeprollingalong · 07/09/2018 21:12

Wait until she is born, neither might be her name, you'll know when you see her!

SunsetOverEasterIsland · 07/09/2018 21:14

Tabitha Rose is beautiful. If you and DH love it you should go with it. She will be your DD, and that's all that matters

TaggieRR · 07/09/2018 21:16

I much prefer Tabitha to Ivy

InezGraves · 07/09/2018 21:16

Both names are nice, but if you like Tabitha, it’s far from unusual. Also, what on earth does your mother have to do with what you name your baby?

Pressuredrip · 07/09/2018 21:18

Tabitha is one of my top 5 favourites, and certainly isn't uncommon these days.

helpmum2003 · 07/09/2018 21:21

I agree don't consult your family - it's your decision.

Both pretty names - personally I love Tabitha!

Awrite · 07/09/2018 21:23

Tabitha is a cracking name.

To me, Ivy is Ivy Brennan. I cannot understand it's popularity.

I really like Tabitha Rose. It always reminds me of the little girl in Bewitched.

Mum2jenny · 07/09/2018 21:26

Love Tabitha Rose, not keen on Ivy

ZebraKid71 · 07/09/2018 21:27

Tabitha by a million miles. I think ivy will date, I know lots and there are either elderly or under 5.

Tabitha with ivy as a middle name is lovely.

daisypond · 07/09/2018 21:32

Tabitha is much nicer than Ivy.

Oliversmumsarmy · 07/09/2018 21:33

Definitely Tabitha. I am of an age when Ivy was the name of hard old women, usually very thin and who smoked 60 per day. Can picture one now.

alpaca44 · 07/09/2018 21:34

Tabitha much nicer than Ivy. I think of Ivy as the nuisance plant I can’t get rid of in the garden!

SequinsOnEverything · 07/09/2018 21:36
