Opinions on the name Effie (girl)?

Sounds really ugly, old fashioned, sweary and nicknamey.

Sorry.

DramaAlpaca · 07/09/2018 21:59

Sessy19 I am perfectly relaxed thank you, it's Friday and I have Wine. I also know what 'phonically similar' means. Which is why I'm puzzled at the suggestion that Aoife (EE-fah) sounds like Effie (EFF-ie) because it just doesn't.

Fifthtimelucky · 07/09/2018 22:54

I have known of an Effie whose real name was Effield.

Sessy19 · 08/09/2018 06:36

@dramaalpaca...I’m surprised at almost everything you said. But since we’re clearly on different pages, metaphorically that is (to save any confusion, dear sweet alpaca), we’ll agree to disagree.

teacherspets · 08/09/2018 06:55

It's awful.

RoseMartha · 08/09/2018 07:00

I like it

Kizzybeau · 10/09/2018 18:05

Once taught a little ‘sephi’ short for Persephone but thought it was lovely as a stand alone name as she is never called the full name. Seffie would be an alternative spelling similar to Effie?

Ngaio2 · 10/09/2018 23:25

Name of the baby in Silas Marner nn for Euphenia.
I think of it as a maid’s name, I’m afraid.
Too obviously a nn as well. People will forever be asking what it’s short for

Goostacean · 11/09/2018 02:04

Agree with pps, sounds like a nickname and I also read it as “effing” in the thread title. So... it’s a no from me, unless used as a nn for a more “formal” name.

pumpkinyael · 11/09/2018 10:40

Josephine nn Effie is lovely imo :)

Effie would also work as a nn for names like Frances Eliza (or Francesca Elizabeth, Fenella Elspeth, Federica Esther etc ...).

Or maybe Ethel nn Effie? Stephanie, Persephone, Seraphina nn Effie?

HPLikecraft · 11/09/2018 14:21

Name of the baby in Silas Marner nn for Euphenia

No it wasn't. The baby was Eppie, short for Hephzibah.

Lucy1103 · 11/09/2018 18:36

I love it- also heard it in skins and probably love it because Effy seemed extremely cool to me at the time, granted very messed up. However, not sure about it as a full name and think a more ‘complete’ name would be better, with Effie as a nn. Elizabeth is always a fantastic name

Cosmoa · 11/09/2018 19:05

I prefer the name of the actress who played Effie on skins! (Kaya)

PassportBridgetPants · 11/09/2018 19:25

I know an Effie IRL and when I first met her she followed her name with 'And no, it's not short for anything so don't ask!' So can confirm that happens :) Sweet as a nn though.

Realowlette · 11/09/2018 19:26

Love it! We have an Evelyn known as Effie. She is clever, strong and funny... great name!x

iklboo · 11/09/2018 19:29

I worked with a lady called Effie. She used to tell people her middle name was Nell Grin

Maidsrus · 11/09/2018 19:32

I like it but it makes me think of Mrs doubtfire

Cbeebiesrehab · 11/09/2018 19:42

You have great taste @real WinkGrin

Jenniferturkington · 11/09/2018 19:44

I just think Effie Offie

BirthdayKake · 12/09/2018 10:08

I will be using it if I have a girl in May.

SoyDora · 12/09/2018 10:13

There’s an Effie in my DD’s class at school. I can’t make my mind up tbh. On the one hand it’s a fairly sweet name for a little girl. On the other, something just sounds a bit ‘not quite right’ about it. My bum is firmly on the fence.
