Opinions on the name Effie (girl)?

My great auntie was Effie. Not a shortening. She always told us it was Scottish

Anyway I love it.

moredoll · 05/09/2018 18:58

Nope. And a very long, very loud 'No' to Euphemia.

LeeMiller · 05/09/2018 18:58

A nice nickname but doesn't sound like a complete name. I know three: Evelyn, Frida and Frances.

Lindy2 · 05/09/2018 19:00

It could be a shortening of Stefanie/Stephanie if you wanted a more traditional name as well.
I know 2 little Effies and do now quite like it.

ReginaPhalange89 · 05/09/2018 19:02

I do really like it . It was the name of a character in Skins

abbie7 · 05/09/2018 19:05

@ReginaPhalange89 my big worry was that it'd be too closely related to Skins, as that's where I originally heard it Grin

Love it

Trinnidad · 05/09/2018 23:43

I was nearly Euphemia - Effie is usually short for it. The alternative shortening is Phim, which is quite nice. My mum had an Auntie Phim who was Euphemia. Used to be common in Scotland.

MeyMary · 06/09/2018 07:49

It could be short for Ephraima... Iphigenie is also pretty (imo) but she might end up with the nn Iffie.

Effie is really pretty but I'm not sure it works for an adult woman.

spottybetty · 06/09/2018 07:50

Too close to 'Effing'

Sounds like a nn, not a proper name

aquamarine1 · 06/09/2018 07:54

If you're in Scotland then I definitely wouldn't - in a par with Aggie etc.

aquamarine1 · 06/09/2018 07:54

On!

PetraRabbit · 06/09/2018 10:59

On the plus side, it's similar to Evie, Ellie etc and people love those names so it would be popular.

But personally I find it a really ugly sounding nickname type name. I'm sorry. It is probably just me.

Picknickers · 06/09/2018 22:40

Bit fluffy for me.

DramaAlpaca · 06/09/2018 23:20

Aoife is a more traditional name, quite similar sounding.

Erm, Aoife is not similar in sound to Effie, not in the least Confused

Anyway, Effie is sweet as a diminutive for something longer. I find it a bit fluffy & insubstantial on its own though.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 06/09/2018 23:26

I know someone called Effie and at school people used to say “Effie offie” to her. I quite like it, it’s a pretty name but for this reason alone, I’d never let a child go through that

Cbeebiesrehab · 07/09/2018 07:46

If Effie off is the worse a kid gets then she’s doing ok. Smelly Ellie, scabby Abbie, Gobby Gabby etc etc kids will do something silly with a multitude of names-shouldn’t stop them being used.

Sadoldbagpuss · 07/09/2018 07:51

It is a traditional name!! It's Scottish, short for euphemia. There were loads of them in the Highlands years ago.

kenandbarbie · 07/09/2018 09:38

I like it as a nn but a more mature name on bc

Honflyr · 07/09/2018 09:41

Love it

Sungura · 07/09/2018 09:50

As long as YOU like it, that is the important thing, and you seem to. It's a super cute nickname as well as a name that can stand up on its own.

FlipperSocks · 07/09/2018 11:41

I like it.

Effie in skins was short for Elizabeth if I remember correctly.

Sessy19 · 07/09/2018 12:43

An absolutely beautiful girl I was at school with, who was both academically awesome and the sweetest and friendliest girl was Effie, nn for Eleanor. It absolutely suited her. It’s sweet.

It does, phonically, sound similar to Aoife (@DramaAlpaca- that’s phonically similar, so sounds similar, not meaning or origination! Jeez, relax!) if you wanted to use a full name.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 07/09/2018 13:19

It's terrible. Effin hell, Eff off plus even without those connections it's just a group of letters that make an unpleasant sound.

Don't do it.

Bibstersgirl · 07/09/2018 13:22

If my son had been a girl he’d have been Elfie which I’ve only ever heard in my ex’s home country.
