Love Murdo. I'm Scottish.

Dupre sounds French to my ear.

NiamhNaomh · 28/08/2018 22:42

Murdo

Justmuddlingalong · 28/08/2018 22:47

If you had asked "What names would I like if I like Murdo?", I think we can safely guarantee that no-one would have suggested Dupre. They're just absolute opposites in every way. If you prefer Dupre go for it, you don't need us all to love it. But I'm still rooting for Murdo.

TapTapTo · 28/08/2018 22:49

I'm not bothered about either way about picking a scottish name.

I liked Sebastian and Zachary as well but they don't go with our surname

I can’t put my finger on why I dislike Dupre so much.

I think it might be because it sounds a bit tryhard? Like the parents were trying to think of a classy name and thought “Well who are the classiest people in the world? The French!”

How would you pronounce it? Doo-pree? Doo-pray?

EmmaC78 · 28/08/2018 22:57

Murdo is a great name. I am Scotland though so know a few.

Sophronia · 28/08/2018 23:25

Murdo

ReginaPhalange89 · 29/08/2018 07:29

I like Murdo. I know a couple of Murdos, brothers are always Angus !

My first thought of Dupre was the movie 'You, me & Dupree' .... And then after reading the blother comments I agree it sounds like a French tennis player haha.

YouCantBeSirius · 29/08/2018 07:40

I like Murdoch, but then I think of Murdoch Fraser.

YouCantBeSirius · 29/08/2018 07:41

Bloody autocorrect, Murdo FFS

BertrandRussell · 29/08/2018 07:44

I know thar many names have a variety of pronciations, but it does seem daft to choose a name where every single person for the rest of his life will respond with “I’m sorry- how do you pronounce that?”

Sunflower321 · 29/08/2018 07:45

Murdo is great.

Dupre looks like it's missing the é, so should be Dupré.

CountFosco · 29/08/2018 07:52

Love Murdo (I'm Scottish if that makes a difference). Dupre is French isn't it?

CalonGlas · 29/08/2018 08:03

Dupre sounds like one of those names American romance writers give 18thC English lords because they think it sounds old and fancy.

When I opened the thread title I was very nooooo to both, but actually, thinking about it, once you get past the, 'Sorry, did you say you're called Murder McLean?! Oh, Murdo...' factor, it's not that bad, especially if you're in Scotland. My mum knew a man called Mungo, which is Biblical and a lot more challenging to live with.

Murdoch, maybe?

Thistles24 · 29/08/2018 09:21

There’s no doubt if you have a very Scottish surname that a Scottish first name sounds better with it. Is it a “Mac” surname? I’m in the same boat, and there’s LOADS of lovely Scottish names to pick from.... Murdo is better than Dupre, though I wouldn’t personally use it- I know loads, but most are 70+ (western isles).
What about:
Scott
Stuart
Craig
Innes
Donald
Fraser
Andrew
Ruaraidh
Seumas
Hamish
Alasdair
Torin
Rannoch
Kenneth
Coinneach
Iain
Hector
Ewan
Lewis
Harris
Campbell
Donald
Calum
Darach
Murdoch
Angus
Fergus
Magnus

My mum knew a man called Mungo, which is Biblical

Mungo is not biblical!

CalonGlas · 29/08/2018 16:34

Ooops! Mum always insisted it was Biblical, and her RE knowledge was way better than mine so I assumed she knew what she was talking about - but it seems thanks Google that Mungo is actually the nickname of 6th century apostle, St Kentigern, patron saint of Glasgow. So... sort of religious-ish.

BertrandRussell · 29/08/2018 16:57

The obvious name for a McCloud is Norman, like the ancient kings of Skye.

Ledehe · 29/08/2018 20:24

I love Murdo. It's one of the best names ever said in a Scottish accent. All i need is for your second name to be MacSporran and you would have the greatest Scottish name that ever existed (I'm glasweigian by the way before I'm accused of some kind of anti Scots sarcasm)

Gregor is the closest name I can think of that gives me that guttural r and strongness of Murdo

Dupre sounds French

Quangot · 29/08/2018 20:38

Murdo is too similar to murder.

Dupre reminds me of the cellist Jacqueline du Pré so I think of it as a surname. Better than Murdo though, IMO.

hurrythefuckupgeorge · 29/08/2018 20:47

I love Murdo!

I am so gutted we never had a boy as so many great scottish names - Magnus, Munro, Hamish, Angus, Innes, Fraser. Just love them all!

WaxOnFeckOff · 29/08/2018 22:48

Definitely Murdo. Also love Struan, Gregor and Keir or Kerr.

BertrandRussell · 29/08/2018 23:11

Lachlan?

moredoll · 30/08/2018 00:05

I like Murdoch. Dupre sounds like a twee condom.

moredoll · 30/08/2018 00:06

Murdo.
Autocorrected.
