How many baby Asher's do you know?

Baby boy is due in a few weeks and after really struggling to find a name DH and I both like we thought we were finally settled on Asher (middle name will be Jack) but we've now found out Asher was apparently the most popular boys name of 2017 Confused

We had no idea the name had become so popular. DH thinks we should use it anyway but I was one of five girls in my class at school with the same name and hated it so I'm having a wobble.

So what do you think? Is it too popular? Should we go back to the drawing board?

Love the name. I know one 15 month old called Asher but he lives in America.

CheeseTheDay · 26/08/2018 19:33

@MinisterforCheekyFuckery - I'm Jewish, and wouldn't think twice about anyone non-Jewish using Asher. After all, it's also a Christian name, as obviously is in the bible, so it's by no means solely Jewish.

One of my friends named her son Reuben, and asked me if it was OK for a 'non-Jew' to use, like I'm the Jewish name police!! Wink

Anyway, to answer your initial question, the only Asher I know personally, is my son. And he's not a baby, although he'll always be 'my baby' as he's 15.

I know a lovely baby Asher, aged around 6 months. Parents are neither Jewish nor Hindi but vaguely hipster! We are in the UK (London). I quite like it but DH can’t get his head round it and keeps referring to the baby as ‘she’ due to the similar girl’s name.

I don't know a single Asher

Distancehelp · 26/08/2018 20:56

One, named after the tribe of Asher. He’s about 2?

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 26/08/2018 21:00

Roughly a brimful.

LarkDescending · 26/08/2018 21:04

I know just the one Asher - a newborn, whose parents are Welsh.

I wouldn’t take the slightest bit of notice of what people have been clicking on Nameberry. Sites like that set up clickbait lists of “names in the news”, “cool names for boys” etc, and Asher would be alphabetically early in any such list. Doesn’t mean anyone clicking on it is going to choose it, or is even a prospective parent.

I only know one, a 2 year old, but he's American ! Totally suits it too.

I had seen it crop up on lots of baby name lists too when I was expecting in 2016/17, so I thought it must be popular maybe in England. (I'm in Scotland, never met an Asher here)

foxtiger · 27/08/2018 16:59

I only know of one Asher, who must be about 14 now.

Ca55andraMortmain · 27/08/2018 17:03

I know one Asher who is 7. I'm a teacher and have never met another one. I love the name and was planning to use it for ds who was born 10 weeks ago but turned out to be DD!

Agustarella · 27/08/2018 18:08

Great name. XP's brother is Asher, but he changed it himself (from Neil) when he became super-religious and went to live in Israel.

DC2018 · 27/08/2018 18:17

I don't know any Ashers and have never heard of Ashers bakery (I'm 27) It's a great name, go for it x

WhatinThe you beat me to it! Grin

BrutusMcDogface · 27/08/2018 18:26

None! Oh, I lie; I know a girl called Asha.

Roomba · 27/08/2018 18:27

I've never met a single child named Asher. Ever. I know lots of people with baby boys, so it can't be that common.

Notquiteagandt · 27/08/2018 19:20

I know 3 ashers. Aged 5, 3 and a baby.

All african british by pure coincidense.

If you have gone off asher what about Abel. Simular feel to it.

weekfour · 27/08/2018 19:25

A brimful...

SpectacularAardvark · 27/08/2018 20:20

I go to loads of baby/toddler groups and haven't met any Ashers yet.

I did meet an Acer, couldn't stop thinking of laptops.

OpenThatTrapDoor · 28/08/2018 05:52

I know two Ashas (girls), both toddler age.

Shadow1234 · 08/09/2018 19:26

Maybe Ash or Ashley, not too keen on Asher.

moredoll · 08/09/2018 19:31

None.

Yep, number 288 in 2016.

My ds is Asher and he is now 17. Never met another one. He loves his name and it really suits him.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 16/09/2018 18:03

Roughly a brimful

Oh god, I hated that song Hmm
DH and I both still really like the name though. We can't find another boy's name we both like anywhere near as much and it goes well with our preferred middle name and our last name. So I think we're going to stick with it, in spite of its association with cake-related bigotry and inane britpop Grin

I know of none.

bangourvillagebesttimeever · 16/09/2018 18:11

It’s really popular where I live ... probably know around 10 boys.....

Only kidding I know zilch which is unusual and where I live there are DC with a varied array of names but Asher isn’t one of them
