My niece who is 12 is called Polly and it really suits her, sweet and cheerful. It’s a jolly name. She is named after her great-great grandmother on our dad’s side so she has the same first and last name. We have fabulous Edwardian pictures of the earlier Polly in her wedding dress.

Lacks substance , wet , twee
Main character from a 1970s horror movie
Ok for a cat , pony or dog
Servant type name
Sorry

MakeItStopNeville · 26/08/2018 05:33

I love it and don’t think it’s cutesy at all. Pollyanna, on the other hand....

AsleepAllDay · 26/08/2018 05:46

I like it! Classic sounding names are making a comeback so by the time she's in school she'll be with Mabels and Ediths

Wallywobbles · 26/08/2018 07:17

Pollyanna.

Flashinggreen · 26/08/2018 07:23

I know a lovely Pollyanna who’s a Polly or Pol, so I like it.

poochuspoochus · 26/08/2018 09:16

@prettygreywalls

Ha Ha, what the hell is a Servant type name. Have you travelled forward in time from the Victorian era and are now posting on Mumsnet.

TatianaLarina · 26/08/2018 10:01

Love Polly. Know 3 cool ones.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 26/08/2018 11:58

Love it !

Shmithecat · 26/08/2018 12:06

Love it. Was in my top 2 for girls names. We had a ds though 🙄

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 26/08/2018 12:11

I really like Polly and agree that it somehow has more substance and is less cutesy that Molly, Poppy, Maisie etc despite having a very similar sound

I also think it will date better as its one of those names that has been around for years but never been overused

AsleepAllDay · 26/08/2018 13:24

Can't imagine calling a child Pollyanna, I always liked Penelope for Polly

blueskiesandforests · 26/08/2018 13:45

Pollyanna is a joke name in the book/ film - poor relations used both rich aunt's names as one (Aunt Polly and Aunt Anna) for their DD in the hope of financial favour/ inheritance.

Being a Pollyanna is usually not used as a compliment, because it's usually used to describe excessive, blind, over the top, inappropriate optimisism carried to the point of being incredibly irritating...

Polly or Anna, but not Pollyanna!

Op is only intending to use Polly though.

BasilFaulty · 26/08/2018 15:00

Agree about Pollyanna, much more twee I think.

I like it. I've only known two (both adults at the time), and they were both quite fit and sporty, so it feels like quite a "strong" name to me despite also being quite pretty and feminine.

For some reason I could particularly see it suiting someone with red hair.

NameChangedNow · 28/08/2018 04:00

I would hate it to be my name so on that basis I wouldn't use it.

LucyLou19 · 29/08/2018 22:09

I have a 14 year old named Polly!!! Absolutely love it and she’s the only one in her school of over 700 pupils xx

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 29/08/2018 22:13

I love Polly! It’s definitely not twee.

CornforthWhite · 29/08/2018 22:20

Love it

I have an 8 year old Polly. Still love it. She is strong, funny and quite fierce. Not twee or cutesy at all. She is the only one in her school (350 kids). I know an adult Polly and she loves it too. The only other child I have met with the same name was a 4 year old at a park recently. I don't see it as being similar to Molly/poppy.

Have also never had any jokes like Polly parrot or put the kettle on or Polly dolly!

Lucy1103 · 30/08/2018 22:36

Sorry, but to me it lacks strength and makes me think of someone mild and meek- wet. I get what @prettygreywall means by ‘servant name’ as in you’ll find weaker characters in books with this name

LucyLou19 · 31/08/2018 07:58

@lucy1103 I have a 14 named Polly and believe me she’s nothing BUT weak! She’s one of the smartest strong minded people you could meet! Name suits her so much also!

Lucy1103 · 31/08/2018 08:08

@LucyLou19 I’m sorry, didn’t mean to cause any offence and of course I’m sure there are people with the name that go against my associations with it. I was just saying that personally this is the image that the name creates before I’ve actually met the person

LucyLou19 · 31/08/2018 08:51

No offence taken! Just stating don’t judge someone by a name xx
