I posted a while about about Chloe/Hermione, I still love the latter but hubby not keen as a first name which is fine.

This is our new shortlist so far, in no particular order:

Aurelia - a bit posh maybe and potential for mispronounciation?

Chloe - we both like but it's quite popular where we live.

Francesca - I like but hubby less keen, doesn't think it's a pretty name.

Sophia - as per Chloe, we know lots of them.

Olivia - v popular.

Any thoughts - do you have lots of a certain name where you live? Would mispronounciation put you off? We have two girls already so finding it harder to pick this time!

Aurelia - I LOVE this name, I know a lovely five year old Aurelia who gets called Reyli (pronounced Ray-Lee) which I think is adorable. I don't think it's too posh - it's quite a similar name to Olivia which is very common these days, just less popular.

Chloe - very 90s, quite boring, not very nice, a little chavvy (I would group it with names like Shannon and Chantelle) . I prefer Zoë by a country mile.

Francesca - I love this name.

Sophia and Olivia - lovely but v popular, especially Olivia

I would rank them:
Aurelia
Hermione
Francesca
Sophia
Olivia
Chloe

BewareOfDragons · 24/08/2018 22:05

I like Aurelia and Francesca, only know a couple of each in the primary school age range.

The others are very, very popular and everywhere you look. I know many, many Chloes, Olivias and Sophias between 1 and 18 essentially. Crazy common.

Not keen on Hermione at all.

TroubledLichen · 24/08/2018 22:05

Aurelia- I like it, I wouldn’t think of any specific class connotations
Chloe - very 1990s/early 2000s
Francesca- 1980s/1990s, I don’t like Fran

Sophia- it’s a nice name but there are so many
Olivia- same as Sophia

pouraglasshalffull · 24/08/2018 22:08

Aurelia- a nice name, not the best, but not awful but also not very common. Only problem would be mis-pronunciation and mis-spelling.

Chloe- not overly keen on this name, very common

Francesca- I don't think this name is very feminine, my least favourite on your list. This will get shortened to Fran or Frankie, not keen on either

Sophia- I think this is an absolutely beautiful name. This is on DD list, I think its so feminine and lovely, I'd recommend this. I actually don't think it's too common, I've only ever heard of 1 Sophia and she's mid twenties now. I've heard Sophie a lot more

Olivia- I absolutely love this name, if it wasn't so popular it would also be on DD list, but its just too common for me

I'd be between Aureila and Sophia. My maiden name was quite difficult to pronounce and spell and it was an absolute nightmare. I was relieved when I got married and ended up with a normal name. It would take about 5 attempts of spelling it out before people finally got it right, and people constantly pronounced it wrong even after I corrected them. Because I know how awkward it is to spell/pronounce a different name I'd go for Sophia. It's definitely put me off naming DD a name that's like Aurelia.

glintandglide · 24/08/2018 22:08

Love Aurelia
Chloe is very 80s
Love Francesca
Sophia - I just don’t think this sounds nice
Olivia- lovely name, actually not so popular now compared to like 7 years ago.

wheezing · 24/08/2018 22:09

Aurelia - lovely
Francesca - lovely
Chloe - very 80s/90s
Olivia - I love this name. It is obviously incredibly popular though.
Sophia - also nice but to me it’s the type of name that tries to be unusual but isn’t remotely unusual now.

SellFridges · 24/08/2018 22:09

Aurelia is lovely. The others are a bit popular for my liking.

TubeTop · 24/08/2018 22:11

Aurelia- reminds me of Areola

MrsMolehillMountain · 24/08/2018 22:11

Aurelia- I prefer Aurora but it's not bad. Would probably grow on me if I knew someone with this name. Oh and it makes me think of the Portuguese woman on 'Love Actually' so I always read it in Colin Firth's voice 😂
Hermione- will always be Harry Potter for me. It's a bit clunky sounding to me but again, it's not awful.
Francesca- Ok
Sophia- very overused! I wouldn't use it
Olivia- extremely overused!!!! I'm fed up of hearing it 😭
Chloe- Ok

TubeTop · 24/08/2018 22:12

Francesca is lovely, with options for Fran, Frannie for short.

MerryMarigold · 24/08/2018 22:13

I like Francesca. Fran for short.
How about Felicity?

Belindabauer · 24/08/2018 22:16

Aurelia - don't know anyone called this. Seems nice enough. Thing you might have problems with mis pronunciation/spelling.
Chloe - ok reminds me of the perfume.
Francesca- nice.
Sophia - nice but very popular, the new Sophie.
Hermione - always remember nd me of Harry Potter.
Olivia - very popular.

HairyToity · 24/08/2018 22:16

I like Chloe, Sophia and Olivia. The name that occurs more than once in DD's class at primary is outside top 100. I would ignore popularity and go with the name you love.

Alienspaceship · 24/08/2018 22:18

I love Francesca, and it has lots of shortening to choose from. Sophia and Olivia are lovely but far too popular and so a bit boring.

ReginaPhalange89 · 24/08/2018 22:18

Aurelia - lovely ! It's the name of the portuguese girl in Love Actually so automatically think of her

Hermione - too associated with HP. Don't like it
Francesca - really like this
Sophia - very common the last few years along with Sophie
Olivia - number 1 name in UK for years now isn't it ?
Chloe - really like this too! Not popular in my area for a long time

They're all very pretty names to be fair (apart from Hermione). For me I'd order them Francesca, Aurelia, Chloe, Sophia, Olivia.

saltedcaramelmuffin · 24/08/2018 22:21

Love Aurelia.

Love Francesca but don’t like any associated NN, so I wouldn’t choose it for that reason.

BevBrook · 24/08/2018 22:22

The Francescas I know go by Cesca or Frankie. I like Frankie.
Aurelia is pretty but I agree about the potential for mispronunciation. As an Essex girl I would find it difficult to say, like Aurora, but don’t let that put you off!
Chloe, Sophia and Olivia are all very pretty names that are rather popular. They are popular for a reason though and it is the luck of the draw - there may be none in your child’s class, there may be another one. I agree with HairyToity about ignoring popularity.

Camomila · 24/08/2018 22:53

You have fab name tastes OP, I love all of them (apart from Chloe as I used to live across the road from one who was a bit mean/spoilt).

Aurelia and Hermione are my favourites.

Idontmeanto · 24/08/2018 23:04

Chloe and Olivia are too well used for my liking. Lovely names but lots of them out there.
Aurelia is beautiful and I once knew a lovely one. Francesca is pretty, but i’ve heard it a few times recently.

I have a Hermione now in her teens. We’ve only ever met one other who was ten years younger. While I had anticipated, and quite like the Harry Potter association I was not expecting a certain type of teenage boy to follow her around slobbering because they could not quite believe they had met a real one. We encountered one such specimen on holiday recently, she responded when he was actually calling his chocolate Labrador. We saw quite a lot of him after that.

MorrisDancingViv · 25/08/2018 07:58

Chloe and Olivia are quite boring imo. I like Sophia but there are loads where I live so I wouldn't use it.

I love Aurelia and Francesca, would use them myself if DP would let me(!) I actually know two Aurelia. One is at a Baby class I used to attend and despite going for 12ish weeks the teacher just couldn't get her mouth around the name and kept calling her orrie-lia Confused

MikeUniformMike · 25/08/2018 10:23

Aurelia - nice but too frilly

Chloe - no, don't like it and know lots, all get called Chlo.

Francesca - nice but too frilly. Prefer Frances.

Sophia - lovely, but popular.

Olivia - too popular

Vote goes to Sophia.

Rumpleteezer · 25/08/2018 17:00

Thanks for all your responses. Aurelia was a wild card introduced by hubby yesterday, I quite like it, I just wondered if it sounded a bit snobby! We still really like Chloe, I'm not sure on Sophia, there are 4 in my daughter's year of 40 which really puts me off!

I think we are currently going:

Chloe
Aurelia
Sophia
Francesca
Olivia

But will decide on the day!

AtticaRose · 25/08/2018 17:41

I really like Chloe - I only know very posh private school ones!

My favourites from your list would be Francesca and Chloe. The rest are also lovely, so you should go with whatever feels right 👍

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 25/08/2018 18:18

Chloe Aurelia is very lovely .
