Giving daughter a porn stars name?!!

user1471443026 · 07/08/2018 23:08

Hi All,

First time posting but I have been stalking the name boards for a while and could do with some advice.

Me and DH both adore the name Cassie for our little girl due in November and it has been our top choice for ages but a couple of days ago I decided to Google what would be her full name and the first few pages on Google were filled with an apparently well know 'webcam artist' who performs dressed as a Disney princess but then still has a penis! There were thousands of images and even when I put safe search on there were still images coming up as this person is apparently also a trans activist and pretty vocal online.

It has really put me off the name as I would hate for my daughter to Google her name one day and find all of this, even as a young girl I worry she will see something or be drawn in by the Disney princess angle. DH understands where I am coming from but doesn't think it is too big an issue and that things will have moved on by the time DD is old enough to Google herself.

Am I overreacting thinking we need to move on from Cassie and choose something else? Or would you stick with it? Is it as much of a big deal as I think it is? I just feel like the name is ruined and when I look at her I will think of those disturbing images. Could do with an outside perspective? Is it just hormones as DH doesn't really think it's an issue?

Thanks xx

I think most or at least MANY girls names could be attributed to someone you'd rather they weren't. Cassie isn't famous in a "real" way OP.

HirplesWithHaggis · 07/08/2018 23:13

The Prime Minister shares her first and last names (bar one letter) with a porn star. Hasn't held her back any in her career...

user1471443026 · 07/08/2018 23:15

I know she's not well known in that people would instantly think we had given DD a celebrity name, but it is pretty much all that comes up when you search the full name... I'm worrying about nothing aren't I?

Does she really?! Blush

I think your DH is right. By the time your Cassie is old enough to Google herself this, um, gentleman is likely to have moved on and not be an online presence any more. In addition hopefully you'll have childproofing on there.

It's a shame the internet is so full of this stuff really, I actually remember being about 13 and just starting with the internet, and we had the fun idea to type in random words and add www. and .com to them. When I tried my first name, which is a totally normal girls name, it came up with a porn site and I was mortified! But I never considered that anything to do with me or my name. It was just a funny/weird thing that my friends and I laughed about.

ReginaPhalange89 · 07/08/2018 23:17

I haven't personally heard of that so not sure what the full name is, and just doing a quick Google of Cassie without a surname didn't bring up anything dodgy...

I'm not sure. I like the name Cassie, it's so pretty. But if it's a well known thing with her full name then that probably would put me off. I guess it's a bit like if you had the same name as a celebrity., If people know that celebrity they think of it automatically.

Sorry I'm not much help 😔 have you any other names in mind , maybe something similar to Cassie ?

user1471443026 · 07/08/2018 23:18

@AjasLipstick just wondering - do you recognise the Cassie I am referring to? How popular is she?

OP posts:
pennycarbonara · 07/08/2018 23:18

Ajas OP means the first name plus their surname, not just the first name on its own.

I would definitely use a different first name!
Difficult to tell how long this porn star and their search results will hang around for now, but at the moment more famous porn stars from say, 15 years ago are still known to those old enough, and searchable. Could be an awful name to have as a teenager.

You can't do anything about people with the same name becoming famous years after your child is born, but you can at least make sure the kid doesn't have a potentially embarrassing name based on the info available now.

DilianaDilemma · 07/08/2018 23:19

I wouldn't worry, it's not as though we're talking about a generally known personality and definitely not someone famous enough for the wider public to make automatic associations (kind of like naming a son 'Elvis' would be).

You could always formally name her Cassandra and shorten it to Cassie if it puts your mind at ease.

FWIW, off the top of my head, people with questionable name associations that I personally know and never ever think about:

  • Patron saint of prostitutes: current boss of a work friend.
  • Notorious serial killer: different friend's SO
  • Nazi war criminal: several now all elderly people I know
  • ...

TL;DR: if you like the name, go for it!

YaLoVeras · 07/08/2018 23:19

What about Cassidy with Cassie as nn?

Or the full name of Cassandra actually.

rainingcatsanddog · 07/08/2018 23:21

I think that a lot of people share their names with porn stars if their surname/first name is common.

When your dd is old enough to Google herself hopefully you'll have internet filters that don't bring up any adult images.

I wouldn't worry since your combination isn't famous like Stormy Daniels. I bet that people are still naming their dd Katie Price.

HirplesWithHaggis · 07/08/2018 23:26

user Yes, it's Teresa without the "h", the tabloids were highly amused when she became Home Secretary. Grin

Cassandra is a lovely name and actually I like Cassidy too as suggested by a pp.

LovelyBranches · 07/08/2018 23:29

Cassie is a lovely name and I wouldn’t let a google search stop you from naming your dd. I do really like Cassandra or Calliope too

user1471443026 · 07/08/2018 23:45

I am feeling a little foolish now - definitely an overreaction I think. I even know someone called Katie Price and have only just made the connection.

I don't actually know how popular this Cassie is, it just seemed quite overwhelming seeing all of the images. I'm guess I am fairly naive about this sort of thing so it really shocked me but it is good to get an outside perspective.

We had ruled out Cassandra due to Only fools and horses - it is beloved in my family and she would get constant jokes. But I hadn't considered Cassidy and I actually really like that a lot so it may be the solution. Our second favourite is Serena but I am worried it might sound a bit too 'try hard' and I feel a bit silly saying it aloud (if you see what I mean?).

user1471443026 · 07/08/2018 23:48

Also just to add, I did put all of the child protection/safe search stuff on and this person still came up as the main results due to their activism and I think they also Vlog about being trans.

OP posts:
pennycarbonara · 08/08/2018 00:17

Why is Serena try-hard? It's a well-known name now because of Serena Williams. It might have sounded posh in the 80s or something, but I'd say she's made it a normal classless kind of name.

RomanyRoots · 08/08/2018 00:31

i know a Czarina, it means Princess.

Sessy19 · 08/08/2018 06:02

I think you’re overreacting! Don’t worry about it too much. Clear your cookies....when I searched for ‘Cassie transactivist’ it wasn’t until the second page if results that she even came up. There’s no ‘porn’ connection.

You could probably pick ANY name and find a porn star with the same. And trans activism is definitely not the worst association for a name

GreasyFryUp · 08/08/2018 06:23

I've just googled Cassie. Haven't come across the person you mention in the first few pages.

smurfy2015 · 08/08/2018 06:49

One of my carers is called Cassie she is early 30s, friend of niece is Cassidy is 19/20, all lovely names nothing wrong with them in my opinion.

Other niece has a common name with a slight twist so it has an E where usually there is an A. She is wanting to do drama, dance and has been in one film already and is known as X name with an E

Go for whatever you love, there will always be something about every single name

supercalifragilistic2 · 08/08/2018 07:11

By the time your dc is 10 you won't see half the same searches. As someone else mentioned, lots of people share their name with someone who is famous for something or other. In 20 years time their may be a famous actor with the same name.

If you were planning on calling your child Katie price or Jordan price I would be in the no camp.

I doubt many people will no that Cassie X is a webcam star. Some may be aware of her being a trans activist, but that doesn't automatically mean a negative association.

Someone at work named his daughter after a VERY famous porn star.

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 08/08/2018 07:34

I wouldn’t worry. Life will have moved on by the time your little Cassie is old enough to google. I like Cassidy with Cassie as nn. Also Callie is a sweet alternative. Not a fan of Serena which, to me, is quite a hard sounding name compared to Cassie.

Happyoldbat · 08/08/2018 07:39

How about Caroline, Cassie for short?

SumAndSubstance · 08/08/2018 09:40

For all those saying this person doesn’t come up when you google Cassie, the point is that they come up when you google ‘Cassie OP’s surname’ - it’s not just the first name she’s worried about, it’s the combination.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 08/08/2018 09:48

Cassie is lovely, by the time your little girl has grown up, this other person, will more than likely have moved on to a different occupation.
Cassia and Cassidy are both nice, not keen on Cassandra though.
