Have heard a lot about it sounding like violent and is just generally harsh sounding? But I quite like it. Your thoughts?

I’m well aware it’s derogatory, it’s a term specific to antisocial, loutish behaviour.

^^

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/08/2018 11:50

There you go backtracking.
Why do you feel the need to point that out? It's been said time and time again on MN that the word chav is offensive.

So why do you insist on using it?

TatianaLarina · 08/08/2018 12:01

I have no idea why you think that’s backtracking.

I wondered if you didn’t actually know what it meant, I’m still not convinced.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/08/2018 12:06

You're not owing the fact that you called the name Lexi chav but keep saying it's term specific for loutish behaviour.

TatianaLarina · 08/08/2018 12:09

A chav is a person...

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/08/2018 12:20

Lexi is 100% chav, so I’d let that go, fast.

So why did you feel the need to write that then?

Pompom42 · 08/08/2018 12:29

I've always liked this name and would def choose it if I had another baby

RedPandaMama · 08/08/2018 12:30

I adore Violet. My daughter is Florence and I want our second (if we have a girl) to be either Violet or Dorothy.

Mousefunky · 08/08/2018 12:33

There are two in DD’s year (just left year 1) so it’s definitely popular right now. Our NDN’s toddler is Violet too come to think of it. Before this, the only Violet I knew is one of my Grandma’s best friends Grin. Makes me think of Willy Wonka as well.

TatianaLarina · 08/08/2018 12:55

Because it’s a chavvy name...

rosealltheway · 08/08/2018 16:37

Violet is utterly gorgeous 1 of the most lovely names that's not overly used out there for a girl, definitely go for it.

BonnieLass5 · 08/08/2018 16:44

Awful. So wet fish. And the toilet and violent connotations are terrible.

Lucylookingforhelp · 08/08/2018 17:42

@RedPandaMama Florence and Violet sound so great together x

@TatianaLarina I don’t see your problem with it being ‘chavvy’ especially as, being a nickname, it would only be known to people once they’d known my daughter. Why is it any better to name your child something that creates the image of a snob than a ‘chav’?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/08/2018 17:45

I think that the 'violent' thing is very odd. It's a beautiful name and makes me think of flowers and sweeties. Plus, Penhaligons Violetta was the most beautiful perfume ever and I'm still annoyed that it was discontinued...

It’s not one or the other.

Violet is a gorgeous name, and so is Alexa.

pixieloux · 08/08/2018 18:38

@RedPandaMama Either name with be great with lovely Florence! Florence was on our list this time around but both DDs have nature names and DS doesn't so we thought we'd avoid using another.

Skyejuly · 08/08/2018 20:32

Beautiful name. Total classic

GinUnicorn · 08/08/2018 21:29

Sorry pressed send too quickly. I was going to say I appreciate they are really similar though so it’s a strange preference on my part but thought it might be worth throwing into the mix!

GinUnicorn · 08/08/2018 21:30

Aaah! Sorry now the first half disappeared!

That should read I’m personally not to keen on Violet but love Viola. Sorry for the odd posting!

Jeanclaudejackety · 08/08/2018 21:37

Where I live we'd say Vy-lut so nothing like Violent.

It's lovely, but I do know 4 preschool aged or baby girls called it
