Have heard a lot about it sounding like violent and is just generally harsh sounding? But I quite like it. Your thoughts?

Thank you all so much! Anyone I’ve mentioned it to has looked at me like I’m mad but this has reassured me. Just need to choose between this, Evangeline and Alexa which despite all the Amazon comments find it hard to let go of (especially because of nn Lexie)

I personally love Violet and Evangeline (my LO is Violet Niamh 💜) but you could make some first and middle name combos out of the three? ...

Violet Evangeline/Evangeline Violet
Violet Alexa/Alexa Violet

Violet is very pretty. So is Violetta.

BewareOfDragons · 07/08/2018 21:38

Evangeline is also lovely. Not quite as keen on Alexa; seems very 80s.

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/08/2018 21:39

It doesn't make me think of violent, but I still don't like it. It's harsh sounding to me - not a massive fan of flower names for girls as they're just too frilly for my tastes, but this is too much in the opposite direction.

Ultra-violet light, the 'v' sound, and all the consonants - it just sounds harsh to me. Also, it does conjure up Violet Beauregard from CATCF for me - not the nicest association!

But it would be boring if we all liked the same names.

EspressoPatronum · 07/08/2018 21:39

Out of your the choices I think Violet is the best!

Joeybee · 07/08/2018 21:46

I love Violet, it was our number one name contender if baby had been a girl. However someone on a forum mentioned that it sounded like 'violent' and it really put me off. I don't think the name is harsh sounding, and in-fact I'd want my daughter to have a strong, bold name rather than a cutesy princess-y name. Violet is becoming quite popular though, and that also put me off a bit. Maybe in a few years when I'll be trying for a second baby I'll consider Violet, depending on how popular it becomes.

Rebecca36 · 07/08/2018 21:48

I think Violet is a lovely name. Never before heard anyone say it is like 'violent' (that would be a typo hee hee).

Flower names are so pretty - Rose for example. I'm glad they are coming back into fashion.

midsomermurderess · 07/08/2018 22:26

I just don't like it, and one of the most unlikeable people I have ever met named her one of her daughters that, which doesn't make it appeal any better.

pilates · 07/08/2018 22:33

I don’t think of violent. It’s a pretty name.

Growingboys · 07/08/2018 22:38

I don't think violent ever!

Pretty name. Becoming ever more popular.

TatianaLarina · 07/08/2018 22:59

Lexi is 100% chav, so I’d let that go, fast.

sultanaloaf · 07/08/2018 23:44

It doesn't make me think of violent at all! However I may be biased, my grandmother was a Violet and I have a Grace Violet.
I think it's pretty!

Lucylookingforhelp · 08/08/2018 08:57

@TatianaLarina and Tatiana is 100% snob

It’s not about me, it’s about defining your child by a social bracket before people have even met them. Same goes for Rupert or Tarquin.

And the whole nn as first name lark which many people find irritating.

CheeseTheDay · 08/08/2018 10:37

I love Violet. It's the name of my 18yo niece, and she loves her name too!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/08/2018 10:44

The term chav is very derogatory.
Anyone with half a brain knows that and doesn't feel the need to use it, especially on a board where people are discussing potential baby names.

littlepeas · 08/08/2018 10:55

My gran and mil are both named Violet and both dislike it (in fact, my gran never uses it and goes by a different name).

TatianaLarina · 08/08/2018 11:05

I’m well aware it’s derogatory, it’s a term specific to antisocial, loutish behaviour.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/08/2018 11:08

Yes I know what it's associated with.
That wasn't my point Hmm

TatianaLarina · 08/08/2018 11:19

I’d ask you what your point is but I don’t care.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/08/2018 11:25

You know what my point was. That it makes you look thick for calling certain names chav and then even worse for trying to backtrack.

slovenlys · 08/08/2018 11:30

I like Violette instead {Vee-oh-let}. Then nn could be Vee Smile

TatianaLarina · 08/08/2018 11:31

No idea what your point was, and if you think I’ve backtracked you’re hallucinating.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/08/2018 11:40

Own the fact you were being derogatory at least.
