Evangeline or Alexa?

Hi, am new on here but thought I’d give starting a thread a go as I’ve been loving reading the baby name ones Smile Me and DH both love Evangeline and Alexa but are having problems choosing between them. Whilst I love how beautiful Evangeline is I’m worried it’s a bit long and frilly whereas Alexa (nn Lexie) gives the impression (at least to me) of someone strong. Middle name would be Violet, although this isn’t set in stone, and would love to hear what you guys think

I love Evangeline, there are so many nn's you can get from that.
I know a 6 year old Evangeline who gets called Angel or Angie and a 2 year old that gets called Evie

Greeneyedgeek83 · 07/08/2018 17:18

Evangeline. It's on my list. It's beautiful

AmyRhodes · 07/08/2018 17:48

Evangeline is beautiful.

You're right that Alexa is a nice name and that the Amazon Echo shouldn't result in the name being avoided, but the fact is, if you name her Alexa you better hope NO ONE who knows you owns an Echo. They will never be able to mention you or your daughter without awakening the beast.

It'll be:

"X has had her baby, she's called Alexa."
Alexa: "Thanks, OK, great."

"Let's go see X and her baby Alexa."
Alexa: "Sure, here's the quickest route."

And so on, forever and ever.

Lucylookingforhelp · 07/08/2018 18:00

@AmyRhodes haha it’d probably end up with them not even bothering

I love Evangeline. Showing my age a bit here but does anyone else remember the House of Elliott?

Cherubfish · 07/08/2018 18:03

My problem with Evangeline is that the nicknames (Eve / Evie / Eva) are so common at the moment.

How about Georgia - similar ish?

Frazzled2207 · 07/08/2018 18:04

No to Alexa due to the robot thing. Violet is lovely too. Evangeline has lovely shortenings so trumps it a bit IMO though some people like names that can't be shortened. But possible Lettie?

Lucylookingforhelp · 07/08/2018 18:09

@Frazzled2207 of course seeing it on the credits it’s what sparked me remembering Colin Firth saying it in Nanny McPhee GrinBlush

I like the name Alexa because it sounds strong. I think any girls name ending in 'a' does. So I like Anna, Hannah, Allanah etc. However, I would definitely not choose Alexa because of the Amazon device.

Personally, I'm not that keen on Evangaline. It's a diminutive and sounds weak and small and frilly.

Icklepup · 07/08/2018 18:16

I like Violet more than Evangeline.
:)

greencatbluecat · 07/08/2018 18:17

I like Nina too.

Lucylookingforhelp · 07/08/2018 18:24

@greencatbluecat that is how I felt about the name and I cant say that re watching nanny McPhee and hearing Colin Firth say it didn’t influence me liking it more Blush but that’s how I feel, I just don’t know if the name represents how I want to raise her. I didn’t think the Amazon Alexa thing would be much of a problem but I’m clearly wrong Grin

Violet reminds of Charlie and the chocolate factory when she blew up like a balloon.

MrsEricBana · 07/08/2018 18:28

Violet is gorgeous!!!
I do like Evangeline BUT had a friend called that who was always called Vange which sounded horribly like a hybrid of flange and, well, you can guess the rest...

SuburbanRhonda · 07/08/2018 18:31

Evangeline is lovely but Evie is extremely popular round here.

MikeUniformMike · 07/08/2018 18:40

Evangeline is too frilly and too much like evangelist.
alexa as pp.

Lucylookingforhelp · 07/08/2018 18:44

@mikeuniformmike and Violet?

RedStef1983 · 07/08/2018 18:48

I love the name Evangeline. It reminds me of one of my favourite Disney movies - The Princess and the Frog Smile

MushroomMushroom · 07/08/2018 19:05

If you like Evangeline how about Emmaline?

Alexa as Pp have said, people will shout commands at her, imagine it at school "Alexa, turn the lights on". Please don't.

Violet sounds like Violent

daisypond · 07/08/2018 19:07

I think Evangeline is too frilly and princessy, and Eva/Evie, etc are too bland.
I like Alexa a lot, though. I wouldn't care about Amazon, etc - but I don't use any Alexa-type devices. I think it's quite a strong name, not too cutesy.
Not keen on Violet either, I'm afraid.

Justkeeprollingalong · 07/08/2018 19:14

Alexa, definitely. Don't worry about The gadget! Lexy for short. Really don't like Evangeline, sorry Confused

Summerisdone · 07/08/2018 19:20

I too agree that Alexa is a bad idea, in fact Alexis or even Alex would be a no from me now because so many people now have an Amazon Alexa that it will just get confusing and annoying if she's at somebody's home and they have one.
I watched a show recently where main character was called Alexis and my Echo Dot would start gabbing every couple minutes thinking we were speaking to her Confused

I think Evangeline is a beautiful name and reminds me of Evangeline Lilly the actress, it's also not an unusual name but also not that common so DD probably won't end up in a class with half a dozen other kids also called the same name.

MikeUniformMike · 07/08/2018 19:22

I quite like Violet but it is very popular, looks like Violent and gets pronounced Vilet. Vi is quite cool though, much cooler than Ada
:q!

Summerisdone · 07/08/2018 19:26

Oh I've just RTFT and seen Violet is now also in the mix, I like that name, it's very pretty.
