Poppy?

Hi all,
We don’t yet know the sex of our baby but have begun discussing baby names.
We like the name Poppy for sentimental reasons as we found out about her/him when the baby was the size of a Poppy seed and the nickname has just stuck. My gut feeling is that it’s a girl so...
What do you think of the name Poppy? And
Can you think of a middle name? (Surname begins with a W so no “E” names... don’t want a PEW baby haha!

Thanks!

I know a lovely Poppy - she is 25. Go for it if you want to.

Imnotacelebgetmeouttahere · 28/07/2018 15:33

I have a Poppy Isabelle

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 28/07/2018 15:38

I know several little Poppys. It's fine, completely harmless etc. but it does little for me.

It's like Molly, Ella, etc. names, all okay in a safe kind of way but I find them a bit dull to be honest.

But if you love it, then of course go for it!

Theycouldhavechoseneve · 28/07/2018 15:41

I do love the resurgence of Jean.

Toofle · 28/07/2018 15:51

I know an adult Poppy doing very well in a professional career, and very happy with her name.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 28/07/2018 15:52

I do love the resurgence of Jean

Me too. It's not the sort of name that I usually go for, but for a short name, it has a lot of character.

I know a few adult Poppys! Its a very widely used name and I really dont think you can say 'it doesnt suit a grown woman' when grown women have been being called Poppy for a very long time!! If you dont like it thats fair enough but it does certainly suit grown women and is just like 'Rose' or 'Iris' or 'Lily'!

I like
Poppy Alice
Poppy Florence
Poppy Catherine

ZebraKid71 · 28/07/2018 16:58

I also feel it is more is a cutesy, toddler name than an adult name.

However, it is very popular at the minute so by the time she is an adult there will be loads of adult poppys and it will probably seem more adult-like.

I love the suggestion of penelope nn poppy.

(the prevalence of dogs in my area named poppy would put me off it!)

Joeybee · 28/07/2018 17:30

Poppy is a nice name, but way too floral and cutesy for my taste. I'd pair it with a stronger middle name to balance it out.
Poppy Mae
Poppy Alva
Poppy Vera
Poppy Sloane
Poppy Matilda
Poppy Scarlet
Poppy Violet

Theycouldhavechoseneve · 28/07/2018 17:35

Yes Bette, Jean is a strong name, I think it’s beautiful. Makes me think of Jean Simmons

RavenWings · 28/07/2018 17:36

I think it's twee and infantilising too. It's like Ellie, Millie etc to me - just very weak and wet. There's nothing wrong with it per se but I hate that particular trend of names.

Penelope nn Poppy is nice, agreed.

seven201 · 28/07/2018 17:55

I like the name Poppy a lot.

immortalmarble · 28/07/2018 17:58

I think Poppy is gorgeous. I like most flower names, though.

I would go for Poppy Jessica or Poppy Charlotte.

If I had twin girls I would call them Flora Charlotte and Poppy Jessica Smile

TheHalfBloodPrincess · 28/07/2018 18:01

Poppy Sue
Poppy Grace
Poppy Alice
Poppy Jane

Billyboo1 · 28/07/2018 18:03

It's fine. Not the best. Certainly not the worst. At least its a proper name.

tomhazard · 28/07/2018 18:17

I like it, but I like a flower name. I know Poppys ranging from 3 to 35 and it suits them all, of course an adult can be called poppy and be perfectly successful.

If you like it OP then use it, don't worry about the opinions of the internet (mumsnet is particularly funny about flowery or perceived cutesy names ! )

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 28/07/2018 21:03

How do you get Poppy out of Penelope?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/07/2018 20:57

Poppy is flower name like many others. It's not a diminutive or nickname. It's just like Lily Iris Rose etc.
It's been around for years and adults function with it as a name just like any other. I know a fabulous Poppy Imogen.
I love the name. And like @Liz38 loved Mary Wesley's Poppy Carew.

pickleface · 29/07/2018 23:22

Op this is the exact reason I have a poppy!

tuckingfypo · 30/07/2018 09:57

If you love Poppy, then use it and sod what people think! You'll never please everyone OP! I have a niece called Poppy, I think it's beautiful name Smile

For both DDs I didn't ask for opinions (didn't tell anyone DD2s name till after she was born as it's more a marmite name) because other people's opinions didn't matter, I would have still used the names.

sonnyboo · 31/07/2018 06:52

I don't like Poppy, sorry

PortSouth · 31/07/2018 06:59

Poppy is like Lily, very popular and schools across the country are filled with them. If you like flower names then Violet and Iris aren't as popular.
