We want to call our dd Mimi, but want to give her the option of a longer, more professional name should she want it in the future.

Which long name for Mimi would you choose from this list? We're really struggling to decide...

Jemima
Emmeline/Emilia/Emily
Miriam
Imogen
Esme/Esmé
Hermione (hadn't thought of this one previously, but saw another thread where the OP had a Hermione nicknamed Mimi)

I like the names Imogen and Miriam best from your list, and don't come across lots of girls with either name... but the ones I do know use Immy, Mo, Gen, Miri or Mim as nicknames. If you want Mimi to be the name your daughter is known by, I'd probably opt for a name that has the 'me' sound in it e.g. Emmeline, Emilia/Amelia, Emily or Naomi. Of those, my favourite is Naomi.

I know a Mia called Mimi. It always reminds me of the bit on Outnumbered where the woman (can't remember her name) says "it's not short for Mia, it's long for Mia".

I love Miriam. And for those who are talking about some names being a stretch, my Grandson Tobias is known as Obi!

I know two Mimis in RL and their names are Imogen and Emily.

Rachel Johnson wrote the Notting Hell books about a Mimi whose full name was Imogen.

Are you going to pronounce it Mimmy or Mee-Mee?

I know someone called Esmeralda who's nick name is Mimi. Her sister is Gabriella, nickname Gigi.

I'd say it sounds more natural if the long name has a mee sound rather than a my sound, but then Catherine gets shortened to kate and that doesn't sound the same. There's quite a few standard shortenings that don't sound like the proper name.

My DD2 goes by a nickname more suited to a different version of her full name. It's not an issue.

Forgot to put - I love Hermione and Emmeline

Sorry, from your list, Emilia or Miriam.

I have an aunt called Mimi. Her actual name is Matilde. :) Nicknames are a bit of a crapshoot, tbh...

Someone named Jemima may be called (and prefer) Jem, Jemmie, Jimmie, Mima, Mimi or something entirely different / with no relation to her given name.

Anyhow, Mimi would work for most names with an M and an i... Maria, Miranda, Mireille, Marina, Mattea, Milena, Miriam, Emily, Cosima, Camilla, Hermione, Naomi etc.

You could also try to emphasise the Mimi sound with a middle name (e.g., Marina Miriam, Miranda Mary, Jemima Marielle, Naomi Mirabelle)...
