Is Luna becoming too popular now?

Just seen that it's the fastest rising name in the US and is the 37th most popular name there! Do you think it will do the same here? Will it be like Isla/Evie/Ella?

I don't know of any little Lunas. No.37 might sound quite high on the list, but it's still only a small fraction of all babies born. Even the No.1 names are often just 1 per cent of girls or boys.

Sophronia · 24/05/2018 13:54

It’s #78 here and rose by +52 places in one year.

Remote1candles · 24/05/2018 13:55

The only Luna I know is a teenager who has chosen it as a nickname based on Harry Potter books. I've not heard of or met any baby Lunas.

Daphnedolittle · 24/05/2018 14:10

I know 2 baby Lunas. I think it is becoming very trendy and will continue to rise.
It's a nice name but I wouldn't use it for that reason.

Ylvamoon · 24/05/2018 14:13

I know 3 dogs called Luna...

Ploppymoodypants · 24/05/2018 14:13

I love the name, wanted a HP name and unfortunately don’t like any of the others. However I know about 2 cats, 2 dogs, a number of horses and at least 3 children called Luna, plus 2 local businesses using the name. So yep looks like it’s getting g popular

Ariela · 24/05/2018 14:23

Yes it is popular. I'd not choose it, due to the risk of being teased 'Luna-tic' as per the 3 boys I told off for being unkind to one of the 2 girls on the bus the other week.

spiderlight · 24/05/2018 14:28

I only know one and she's a cocker spaniel.

Mummy2be2018 · 24/05/2018 14:40

I think that's my fear - that it will rise dramatically, then fall, becoming a name of it's time if you know what I mean!

I know three Lunas under three, so I would say it’s rising quite rapidly and may date quite badly, becoming a ‘name of its time’ iyswim

noideawithboysnames · 24/05/2018 14:57

Totally didn’t read your last post OP🙈🙈🙈

Marcipex · 24/05/2018 20:46

Is it really popular? It's awful for a child. Fine for a dog though.

springsummer12 · 24/05/2018 20:47

I think it’ll be a name of it’s time too. I really don’t like it either but each to their own

Mousefunky · 25/05/2018 01:40

It spiked for a while around 2011 when I was having my DD and I think it’s having another little spike now. I do also know of two dogs called Luna...

RedDwarves · 25/05/2018 03:07

It was 66 in Australia in 2017. It hadn't been in the top 100 before that, which means, even conservatively, it shot up 34 places in one year.

90sBrows · 25/05/2018 03:28

I'd use Lyra instead.

Armchairanachist · 25/05/2018 04:00

It can happen with any name. My DD Evie (named after her great grandmother) doesn't know any others in her age group but there's obviously many younger named the same and my twenty something DS Oliver's name wasn't rare but again wasn't popular when we chose it.

Joeybee · 25/05/2018 07:58

It does seem to be becoming a bit of a trendy name. Hopefully it won't tip over from trendy to common.

Mrsknackered · 25/05/2018 08:40

I only know a 2 year old Luna and a handful of dogs I like it but it’s very trendy.

What about Lua? It also means moon and was the name of a roman goddess.

Mrsknackered · 25/05/2018 08:41

armchair my younger sister is an Evie, and my parents got a few raised eyebrows when she was named!

MunsteadWood · 25/05/2018 09:26

Luna is my cat's name Smile

17caterpillars1mouse · 25/05/2018 11:16

I know one 6 year old Luna and 2 toddler Luna's

ZebraKid71 · 25/05/2018 21:48

I know a few baby lunas - it seems to be the more alternative crowd who have picked it as a quirky, unusual name... Unfortunately they all seem to have had the same idea which puts me off it.

Cosmoa · 26/05/2018 04:12

Yes it's definitely growing! I know quite a few!

Downeyhouse · 26/05/2018 05:24

I live abroad and know 2 labradors called Luna! Never met a person called that - it means moon so a bit of a hippy girl’s name in my eyes.
