Is Luna becoming too popular now?

Just seen that it's the fastest rising name in the US and is the 37th most popular name there! Do you think it will do the same here? Will it be like Isla/Evie/Ella?

I really dislike it. I just hear 'loony' every time.

I know 3 baby Lunas and have come across eat least 4 more through baby classes over an 18month period.

I don't know. But I'm honestly not too fond of it.

Lyra, Luana, Lilia and Lydia are nicer imo.

Friend at work is naming her baby Luna Rose

I think your friend is right.

Thanks everyone - food for thought.

Such a big decision! Don't want her to hate her dated name as an adult. My friend thinks it's this era's 'Dawn' - which is hideous!
Maybe I should go back to the drawing board Confused

I think it's a name of its time, and will date. I also think it's a somewhat ridiculous name for a human. Why not use the Greek goddess of the moon instead of the Roman one and use Selena/Selene instead, which is a million times classier?

I love it for dogs not so much for humans.

It's a very popular name for dogs round my way. I know three.

Yes, definitely. No one should ever name their child Luna again and everyone called Luna should change their name by deed poll immediately.

I live abroad and know 2 labradors called Luna! Never met a person called that - it means moon so a bit of a hippy girl’s name in my eyes.

Yes it's definitely growing! I know quite a few!

I know a few baby lunas - it seems to be the more alternative crowd who have picked it as a quirky, unusual name... Unfortunately they all seem to have had the same idea which puts me off it.

armchair my younger sister is an Evie, and my parents got a few raised eyebrows when she was named!

I only know a 2 year old Luna and a handful of dogs I like it but it’s very trendy.

What about Lua? It also means moon and was the name of a roman goddess.

Report
Joeybee · 25/05/2018 07:58

It does seem to be becoming a bit of a trendy name. Hopefully it won't tip over from trendy to common.

It can happen with any name. My DD Evie (named after her great grandmother) doesn't know any others in her age group but there's obviously many younger named the same and my twenty something DS Oliver's name wasn't rare but again wasn't popular when we chose it.

I'd use Lyra instead.

RedDwarves · 25/05/2018 03:07

It was 66 in Australia in 2017. It hadn't been in the top 100 before that, which means, even conservatively, it shot up 34 places in one year.

Mousefunky · 25/05/2018 01:40

It spiked for a while around 2011 when I was having my DD and I think it’s having another little spike now. I do also know of two dogs called Luna...

I think it’ll be a name of it’s time too. I really don’t like it either but each to their own

Report
Marcipex · 24/05/2018 20:46

Is it really popular? It's awful for a child. Fine for a dog though.
