Elspeth shortened to either Essie or Elsie - ok.
Ethel possibly shortened to Effie - Effin awful
Enid - I quite like the welsh pronunciation (ENN-id).
Olive maybe shortened to Oli - No
Isadora - Isadora Jar?

Elspeth is lovely, and I don't mind Isadora. The others are not my cup of tea at all; Ethel and Enid in particular are names that I really don't think are due a revival.

Cyberworrier · 21/05/2018 19:28

Elspeth and the nicknames lovely, Ethel a bit meh imo, Enid and Isadora are nice too,, but Olive makes me think of Pop Eye the sailor man’s strange looking girlfriend- and olives, which to be fair are delicious- and my neighbours poodle Olive.

Pudding01 · 21/05/2018 19:29

I like the nn Effie. Remember the name being used on Skins, but the character's name was Elizabeth, which I prefer.

Isadora is cute Smile

RavenWings · 21/05/2018 19:34

Elspeth shortened to either Essie or Elsie

Ok. I'm not a huge fan of Elspeth, it's a bit hissy sounding, but it's ok.

Ethel possibly shortened to Effie

Effie is a nice nickname, Ethel is dreadful.

Enid

Nooooooo.

Olive maybe shortened to Oli

Initially misread this and thought it said Olive maybe shortened to Oil Grin

Meh. I'm not a fan of Olive. Oli is ok.

Isadora

Gorgeous, love it.

Sophronia · 21/05/2018 19:35

I like Elspeth and Enid. Prefer Isidora to Isadora.

RavenWings · 21/05/2018 19:36

Also Essie = nail polish to me, so I'd go for Elsie.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/05/2018 19:38

Olive is so drab.

Love Isadora. Quick and easy to say, but I also love both Izzy and Dora for shortenings.

flybabyfly · 21/05/2018 19:42

Elspeth shortened to either Essie or Elsie - lovely!

Ethel possibly shortened to Effie - strange shortening imo...not keen on Ethel either

Enid - like it

Olive maybe shortened to oli - ok

Isadora - nice, though a bit too frilly for me

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 21/05/2018 19:45

Isadora and Elspeth are nice. Don't like the others. And I don't like any of the shortenings. Some of them sound very forced.

greendale17 · 21/05/2018 19:50

At a push, Olive

Ethel and Enid are horrid.

Why do you want old lady names?

Theclockstruck2 · 21/05/2018 19:53

Love Isadora! And Elspeth. Olive quite sweet.

redmini4 · 21/05/2018 19:53

Isadora not keen on the others

ellalouise90 · 21/05/2018 19:55

Elspeth is so beautiful 😍

HeyDolly · 21/05/2018 20:12

I like Elspeth and Isadora. The others are a both drab and dowdy imo.

Creatureofthenight · 21/05/2018 20:23

Elspeth/Elsie is lovely.
Isadora is a bit flowery for my tastes but it’s quite nice.
Ethel is awful and not sure how it shortens to Effie - unless you’re a cockney Smile
Enid and Olive ok.

buttercup54321 · 21/05/2018 20:29

Ethel is terrible and Effie sounds like swearing.
Elspeth reminds me of a lisp for some reason.
Enid Blyton famous five etc
Olive. Dreadfully old and boring. Olivia ok,
Isadora just along the lines of Isabelle . Izzy is very overused
Florence
Violet
Maureen
Thelma
Margery
Jean
or preferably something not old lady at all.

daisypond · 21/05/2018 20:30

I really like Elspeth. I'm not keen on the others.

Pemba · 22/05/2018 02:07

Elspeth is nice. So is Isadora, although I really prefer Isabella or Isabetta. Enid is actually quite nice, if you can forget about the Blyton association. I think it's from Greek mythology.

Ethel still a bit of a joke name. Olive is fairly awful, although it seems to be becoming fashionable.

Sametimetomorrow · 22/05/2018 02:15

Really awful but Isadora is passable.

Copperbonnet · 22/05/2018 02:46

Elspeth is lovely. Not sure about your short forms though. I know three of varying ages. The two younger ones get Elle or Ellie from their friends.

The older one gets Elspie which I think is lovely.

Isadora is quite nice the Isadora Duncan connection might put me off personally though.

Not keen on the others I’m afraid.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 22/05/2018 07:49

Elspeth or Olive, both beautiful names, in full.

Titaniumpins · 22/05/2018 07:53

If you like E names I like Esme

Frosty66612 · 22/05/2018 07:58

Elsie is lovely so i’d Go with Elspeth from your list. Really don’t like the others

QueenOfMyWorld · 22/05/2018 08:15

Elsie or Olivia.Not Olive
