River?

Ok ok we are still going through a stage of being certain on a name and then changing our minds. I know some people might not like this name but it's so pretty. We never even thought of it but it shot to the top of our list.

Before that we had Clara, Hailey (we are spelling it this way), Cora and Hallie/Halley (Halley as in Halley's comet). Cora has become kind of dull to me now.

Anyway, what do you think of the name River? :)

I just like what I like I suppose.

I'm in my mid 30's (and female) and my name is River ...I've had compliments my entire life about my name and never had any issues with it at school etc.

It's a pretty sounding word, but it is a boy's name to me (And most people I think). I would choose something a little more conventional personally.

@bridgetreilly because I want to know what other people think of the name too. Just because I like the name doesn't mean I don't want to hear other people's opinions on it.

I would assume River Song, and as you also like Clara I would assume you are Whovians

I'm sorry but I think this name is chavvy.

What about it as a middle name?

I just can’t imagine looking at my baby and cooing ‘Hello River’. Or when they’re older, calling out ‘River’ to him/her in the park
How about ‘Stream’?!

Actually we are doctor who fans :) I suggested the name River because I've liked it since Firefly. River and Clara being both Doctor Who names is just a coincidence.

Don't know if I mentioned it but I love the name Ivy too. River as a middle name sounds nice also :)

Clara is a really beautiful name. River is very definitely a modern boy's name.

Several people have mentioned two well known fictional Rivers who are female, so I don't think it's 'very definitely' at all.

While the responses have generally not been in favour of the name, I do appreciate all of your opinions. I do still love the name though. Thank you :)

Just realised we have a Ryver at school that I’ve been calling R-eye-ver in my mind. Haven’t had to say it but of course it’s just a silly way of spelling River.

Just think of the adult you're naming as well as the child. Some names work better for a baby but not for a 30 year old professional.

I work in a school and have come across some names that haven't aged well for want of a better term examples:
Misty
Jorga
Jayden
Forest
Kimble

Unfortunately I think River falls into the above category, it stands out for the wrong reasons.

Love River. I know a river and she's a girl

Love it but I think it’s better suited to a boy.

I like it, I can't see any reason why a nature name like this can't be unisex.

i love the name river!! its so pretty and unique! and i used to obsessed with river phoenix. i love the name phoenix aswell but no one likes it:( so ive named my kitten phoenix instead!;')

@Everexpandingwaistline I have and I think it actually works better for a "30 year old". I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't age well?

Dislike River for a girl, it's ok for a boy.

Makes me think of River from the firefly series. I think it's lovely!

I love Cora. If you liked Coralie, that could be a full name, Cora for short.
