River?

Ok ok we are still going through a stage of being certain on a name and then changing our minds. I know some people might not like this name but it's so pretty. We never even thought of it but it shot to the top of our list.

Before that we had Clara, Hailey (we are spelling it this way), Cora and Hallie/Halley (Halley as in Halley's comet). Cora has become kind of dull to me now.

Anyway, what do you think of the name River? :)

But Karol is an actual boys name. It’s the Czech version of Charles. River isn’t.

Cosmoa · 04/05/2018 21:36

Yeah he's Polish! But River is a girls name.

Remember... Just because you've never met a girl with a name it doesn't mean it's not unisex!

Tumbleted · 04/05/2018 21:41

Well if you’re going to argue it’s a boys name you could argue that actually it’s a noun. My point is it isn’t assigned to a specific sex-it can be used for either, like most nature names.
I know both a male and a female River but actually find it more feminine.

RedDwarves · 04/05/2018 22:08
  1. River Phoenix
  2. Very trendy at the moment, so will inevitably date
  3. Decidedly masculine

Yep, just because you've never met a girl named David, doesn't mean it's not unisex.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 04/05/2018 22:20

I love it. Fleur de Force has just named her baby girl River.

Cataline · 04/05/2018 22:26

Not a massive fan but it's certainly not awful. Just don't spell it Riva like someone I know did. Hmm

Mathmatical · 04/05/2018 22:56

I love the name but do think of River Phoenix and assume it's a boys name. What about Rain?

Ikabod · 04/05/2018 23:01

I like Cora (I suggested it for DD2 by DH said 😬) my friend's daughter is called River and I think it's beautiful. It makes me think of something that is wild, free and carves its own path.

Singlenotsingle · 04/05/2018 23:02

I've got a nephew called River Smile

Laurel543 · 04/05/2018 23:09

Lovely connotations (wild, free, flowing etc) but I just don’t think it’s an attractive word if you look at it in isolation from the meaning.

River: to me it sounds like Rivet or Liver.
Sorry Confused

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 05/05/2018 07:02

If you like Cora, you may like Coralie, which is very pretty.

Owlettele · 05/05/2018 07:19

I think its gorg for a girl and you should not worry about other people's opinion too much.
@nervousFTM what a beautiful sentiment. A great way to keep that special thought st the forefront to name your first born.

Congrats OP and nervous on forthcoming babies

Joinourclub · 05/05/2018 07:26

I don't really like how it sounds.

I prefer Brook.

It sounds really feminine to me. Haven't met anyone with the name at all regardless of gender.

To someone that asked what if people giggle at the name (which is very unlikely) - This is Scotland, no one cares 😆.

I don't mind if names are trendy, I just like what I like I suppose :)

Chocolateyescakeyes · 05/05/2018 20:23

Would assume it was for a boy, but I like it! Definitely prefer it out of your other choices. I think people would think it was quite cool and not laughable (also from Scotland!).

bridgetreilly · 05/05/2018 20:30

Maybe as a middle name?

Clara River
Hailey River
Hallie River

DrEustaciaBenson · 05/05/2018 20:31

River Tam is a girl.

'I can kill you with my brain.'

BendydickCuminsnatch · 05/05/2018 20:36

I know a fair few, if that bothers you. Yes, mainly boys. It’s not my taste but won’t raise that many eyebrows, kids are called all sorts these days.

RyvitaBrevis · 05/05/2018 20:49

@DrEustaciaBenson Glad someone finally said it! Where are the Firefly fans?

River Tam and River Song are female characters, albeit fictional.

BSJohnson · 05/05/2018 23:54

Makes me think of River Tam, too.

How about Corinna? Like Cora, also comes from the Classical Greek for girl, but is a bit more delicate.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 05/05/2018 23:59

I love River and would have picked it for one of my DDs but DP vetoed. It is fine for boy or girl. River Phoenix was my first love so it was slightly inspired by him but he was lovely and gentle but also strong and intelligent (gush) and that’s how I see the name.

Dixiestampsagain · 06/05/2018 00:17

Not sure about River, but like Hailey and Halley.

User1983 · 06/05/2018 00:21

Thought it was for a boy
