Eve Lin or Ever Lin?

OP posts:

Just realised I hadn’t given my take🤦🏻‍♀️

Ev-uh-lyn but the UH not obvious if you get what I mean

Alexia05 · 27/04/2018 12:15

Well, it's a very common name were I live cause we have a lot of French names. So I would pronounce it the French way: Ev-e-lyn, with a non-loud 'e' in the middle like 'uh'.
In English I say Ev-lyn. Not Eve-lyn. That just doesn't sound natural to me.
Pretty name by the way.

Flossie4 · 27/04/2018 12:17

Eeeeve lin.

tellitlikeitispls · 27/04/2018 12:19

My stepmum is EEEVELIN (born in the North East if that makes a difference) although she hates it so much she's been called by her middle name since she was a child. I personally quite like it, no idea why she detests it so much!

kaytee87 · 27/04/2018 12:26

Ev-eh-lin

There's no R in it

CatchingBabies · 27/04/2018 12:39

My Evelyn has always been Ev-uh-lyn, never had to correct the pronunciation in 6 years as everyone has always said it that way.

BasicBetty · 27/04/2018 12:42

Eve-Lin IMO, but girl in DD's class is Ever-lin

ooobisto · 27/04/2018 12:43

Ever-lin

pipilangstrumpf · 27/04/2018 12:48

Why do some of you add an R?

pipilangstrumpf · 27/04/2018 12:49

Isn't it Ev-eh-lin? And not Ev-er-lin?!

UrbiEtOrbi · 27/04/2018 12:51

Was my mum's name: eve lin. eve to rhyme with 'leave'

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/04/2018 12:56

Pretty sure Evelyn Waugh pronounced it Eevlin. He was male.

Don't know how his first wife pronounced it. She was also called Evelyn. They were known as He-Evelyn and She-Evelyn. They split up. Don't know if the name thing was a factor.

Anyway, I digress. I'd probably assume Eevlin first of all, but I've come across both Ehvlin and Evalinn.

(People are saying Everlin because most English people don't pronounce the r in Ever so to them it sounds the same as Evah. They completely fail to grasp that to those us who do pronounce the letter r this is incredibly distracting.)

BigGapMum · 27/04/2018 12:56

I know a Eve Lyn and an Eva Lyn, both spelt as Evelyn.
Take your pick!

Exactly. When I see Ever-lin, I want to say Ever-lin and not Eveh-lin!

Bubblesandsquarks · 27/04/2018 13:41

Eh- va -lin (south west) probably depends on the accent a lot too.

LiviaAD · 27/04/2018 14:10

Ev - Lin, where are so many finding the r from?

goose1964 · 27/04/2018 14:15

Eve-lin but I suspect there may be a regional aspect to this

Dixiestampsagain · 27/04/2018 18:36

It’s a bit like Groundhog Day, this thread...

Belindabauer · 29/04/2018 09:04

I liked this when I was pregnant undecided against it becayse;
A, I wasn't sure if it's me or female ( as in the author)
B, the pronunciation issue.

I've heard it pronounced as
Eve-lyn
Ever- line
Ever-lyn
Eve-ur-lyn.
I actually would have chosen the latter but realised other people would pronounce it it different ways.
