Positive boost for our chosen name please

'Violet'

Feeling a bit down and pathetic and need a boost.

Family have made it clear they don't like our chosen name. I ignored it at first but it is increasingly hard. New suggestions are constantly thrown at me. I too had doubts about it, but DP wouldn't budge and my favourite name changes weekly. The name doesn't fit with family tradition of having long girls names, and as pointed out by mumsnet it is apparently very popular (unusual names are in my family). From all the arguing the name has sort of stuck and now I'd regret not using it in the future.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the name at the start. It was one of 4 names agreed by me and DP (Jennifer, Elizabeth, Lucy, Violet - also Katherine somewhat). I love how it looks and sounds, and out of all floral names this is the only one I'd consider using.

I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I am fine with people disliking the name, in fact when I posted here originally a lot of people hated it but we went with it anyway! Baby due anytime now and I just need a little positive boost or slap to get these hormones in place.

It’s lovely. Please use it!

RLOU88 · 23/04/2018 11:09

I love it! If I wasn’t having a boy I would actually take it and use it myself Grin

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 23/04/2018 11:19

I love it. My granny was Violet and was a wonderful woman. I wanted to use it for DD4 but DH wasn't keen.

Thank you all. Woken up feeling a bit achey (at that stage where every little pain makes me wonder when labour will be!) but your messages have cheered me up. Feeling much better than last night.

Violet is lovely. It's a flower name without being overly cutesy. Yes it's rising in popularity but I doubt it'll be a name where there are several in a class

BringMeCoffeePlease · 23/04/2018 13:25

What you call your baby is up to you and your DP. Your parents or anyone else don’t get to decide what name you use. If you both love it, go for it.

FizzyGreenWater · 24/04/2018 10:47

I'm going to go against the grain.

I don't think you love the name and I think the driver here is your rather bullying sounding DP.

I'm probably slightly swayed by the fact that I am not a major fan of Violet, I think it's very harsh. And Vi is not great. I prefer any of the other names you mention.

I think you should have a good think about the other names you love and a strong word with your DP (who, as you are not married, can't register the name himself anyway!)

I hope you're giving the baby your surname?

TaurielTest · 24/04/2018 11:01

I don't think Violet is 'harsh' at all - I think the strong consonant at the end counterbalances the floral nature of the name, giving it a lovely balance - "not overly cutesy" as a PP said.

FWIW - I had a friend at university who was known as Olly - her full name was Violet, just in case Vi or Letty don't appeal as short forms :)

Wait until you meet your daughter, and don't let your DP bulldoze you if you're not sure. There is no rush. We didn't name DS2 for over a week. But if you do love it, it is a lovely name.

nmiles27 · 25/04/2018 23:27

I absolutely love Violet and think you should keep it! It’s in my top 3 and OH isn’t having any of it. If you can go for it - i’ll be very jealous!

KichenDancefloor · 25/04/2018 23:32

If it's good enough for Dave Grohl....

Ohmyamy · 27/04/2018 12:16

LOVE LOVE LOVE Violet!

Violet was a Suffragette colour and its the Centenary of the Vote this year, which is wonderful and also like Violet Baudelaire from the Lemony Snicket series, she was super strong and bad ass.

You'll be giving your baby girl a powerful name and if you like it really that's the only thing that matters!

Our girl is called Everly and my entire family hated it at first but we love it and she loves it and i'm so glad we stuck to our guns.

rach01pink · 27/04/2018 12:33

Love love love it

Alexia05 · 27/04/2018 12:46

I'm not a native English speaker and I don't really like the name Violet in French for example. But pronounced in English; Violet is a beautiful, classic name and it's also an international name (Violette in French, Violetta in southern countries etc.). So yes, go for it! Your family members surely have the best intentions. But if you listen to them this time instead of listening to your heart, you might regret it later.

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 27/04/2018 12:49

Violet is a lovely name

I know a 14 year old one myself...and she is a real character

We had ds1 name planned for 12 years before we had him and my mum wasnt keen on it

But when he was born she looked at him and said 'he definitely looks like a Rufus junior '

She didnt HATE the nam, just wasnt keen

ooobisto · 27/04/2018 12:50

Sorry but can't help but think of violent

marmitecrumpets · 27/04/2018 12:51

I really like it

ooobisto · 27/04/2018 12:52

However, don't take any notice of those that don't like it, you're never going to please everyone

DairyisClosed · 27/04/2018 12:52

I have loved it since childhood because of lemony snicket

oncemoreunto · 27/04/2018 12:57

We have a family member with the name, I think it's a pretty name. Don't tell people your names too soon I know people didn't love ours at first but they grow to like them.

Pompom42 · 27/04/2018 12:58

I like it I would def have chose it but I chose a different old ladies name instead.

Oysterbabe · 27/04/2018 12:58

I love it. I appreciate it's too late now but never tell anyone your name choices before the birth. Guaranteed to get "ah my neighbour has a dog called that"

Tp4mybung · 27/04/2018 13:00

Violet is really lovely. Classic, not "out there" but not too common. Works well for children and as a adult, it's beautiful.
DH has insisted on a flower/nature name and I may have to steal it!

A lady at my local WI is called Lathonia, like the butterfly, and I was very close to pinching her name. I think I prefer Violet though. (And I do love Palma violets)

dinosaurfeet · 27/04/2018 13:01

I think Violet is a beautiful name!

Springnowplease · 27/04/2018 13:05

Violetta?

Exhaustedly · 27/04/2018 15:03

Really beautiful name.
